Gray had a decline after our vet visit yesterday. At our 5am feeding she was struggling to breath and I thought I was for sure losing her. By our next feeding she seemed to be more stable. She’s so up and down, it’s hard to watch and hard to predict the outcome. She’s been tube fed for exactly two weeks tomorrow. I’m beginning to doubt whether keeping her here is fair to Gray. This morning she looked really bad. It had to be very uncomfortable for her and painful as well. I’m going to stay the course over the weekend, but if she continues to decline or suffer then we need to decide if it’s time to let her body rest. I’ve only had to make this decision once in the 7 years I’ve rescued. I don’t make it lightly and I don’t like to give up. But when you see clear signs of suffering with no signs of improvement it gets really hard to keep going. It’s important that we keep going for her, and not because of our own wants and desires.
I know this will be difficult to understand for some. I’m with Gray all day, and I’ve been doing this long enough to know when there’s good odds and when it’s prolonging suffering. I’m not ready to give up, but I want to be transparent and let you know where things stand. Please be kind and empathetic in your comments, this is a hard realization to come to and one I’m nervous to share.
Last night I was able to pickup an incubator from a friend (thank yo. But it’s clear to me how vital it is to have an oxygen tent of our own. The tents are $300 and the oxygen concentrators range near $850. I’d like to have two, but we really need to raise enough for Gray to have one.
I have an update for Cake Pop too, I’ll expand in a separate post, but we will be doing a GoFundMe to help cover half of her surgery expenses.
Please consider donating toward an oxygen tent and concentrator, this will help us save so many critical babies like Gray. I’ve also put two oxygen tents on our Amazon wishlist. I know it’s a long shot but if there’s any donors who are able or willing to donate such an expensive item I wanted to have that option available.
