- Rainbow Six Siege has seen plenty of controversial operators over the years.
From Lion to Ela to Ace, Siege has always been a difficult game to balance. But despite the stiff competition, one character might stand above the rest. Blackbeard and his once-impenetrable face shield may have been the worst of it all.
But after Ubisoft nerfed him, Blackbeard went from a terror to a joke. His identity was destroyed.
So how did a broken operator become Nerfbeard?

Remember that clip where there was the recruit shooting the shield and his primary ran out of bullets and his secondary ran out of bullets and blackbeard shield was still alive? That should have been when ubi realised that he was op, not when everyone is shrieking it at their faces
If I remember correctly the shield broke with the last few bullets. I think it was bandit.

He was shooting next to the shield not actually at it, it was for memes. 800 health is about 20 pistol bullets. Use your brain bro
@@deathowesmesouls1079 Just what I thought. With a dps of 350-550, it should take like 2-2.5 secs to break an 800hp shield. That's still significant, but yeah, no way it's gonna empty a recruit's mag
@@deathowesmesouls1079 apparently someone went into game files from an old build of blackbeard and found it was something like 8000 health. Not only was he broken but he was bugged or there was an accident when they coded his shield health
In 5 years, his rifle shield went from 800 HP to 20 HP LMAO
it is literally minus 97,5% healthpoints for his shield bruh 😑
He should have been reworked from the start, (maybe they should have gave him same ability as Osa and give her something more in custom form where she is from and give here VHS 2 and Hs2000 for Gods sake)

Exactly there is no way to counter. Even if you get the first headshot off and blackboard only hits body shots he still wins.

Blackbeard is literally the attacker version of old Tachanka pickrate wise. People ban him in high elo because of headshot denial and window play
He’s very useless now, if they increase his guns fire-rate I think it would fix the problem

Well, the infamous Nerfbeard has set sail once again.
Blackbeard is like the brig of siege, they are designed in a way that means they will always be really good, or useless. The only way to fix it is a rework which worked well for brig

He's still worth using he's just more situationally good on maps like consulate bank club house Oregon places where he can sit there hold a rotation or a obj with only his head showing but on maps like Kafe he is near useless there's no where for him to hold off a rotate or a sight furthermore

I started playing around operation phantom site and blackbeard was one of the first ops I got he taught me the important to hold it down angle and positioning for me BB was a important op to teach me how too play the game
true Blackbeard is a more fundamentals type character, very forgiving. so you have the time to learn the basics and then you can try other operators.
Tachanka stole Blackbeard’s OG shield and stuck it on his turret, so Blackbeard had to resort to wrapping paper
but he dumped it

regarding what was said at 8:30 I think there's a more important point being missed.
He's not a perfect example of balance in a competitive game, he's a perfect example of how core/universal mechanics can't be ignored.
In Blackbeard's case, he was a character added into a game with 2 mechanics that he completely ignored immediately.
1: In Siege, headshots reign king. They're the most straight forward but also important mechanic. Headshots instantly kill people.
2: In Siege, all operators have a gadget. Some are simple, some are complex, some are in between. But they all are capable of providing utility that can support the team, even if it doesn't directly do so OR it's often not used for it. For example Amaru's grappling hook let's her get around quickly, get angles, etc. By extension can punish bad set up or positioning. Ash has ranged soft breaching on Attack. Both of those are examples of gadgets that don't directly support the team and is usually used with a solo play intention, but still can help the team. Blackbeard's shield helps him alone and not by much.
Siege is a game that headshots are #1 and gadgets are what entire team comps can be built around. Blackbeard was added pretty much without a gadget, he gets a shield to block bullets aimed at his head while he's aiming. It does nothing to help his team so when that ends up not being very good for him, it's not good for anyone on the team. When you remove the ability to headshot someone when they can headshot you, it's frustrating and annoying and until they got him to the point he is now where it almost doesn't exist with the high rate of fire that a lot of defender guns have, it would make him OP.
When a game has universal mechanics that impact how the game is played and ALL characters share it, but then suddenly a character is added that ignores any of those mechanics, it's either ridiculously strong or ridiculously pathetic and obviously it goes past characters into things such as individual guns, attachments, moves, etc. For different games.
A good example is Videl in Dragonball FighterZ where she recently got buffed and is decent, but she doesn't have a reflect which is a universal mechanic EVERY other character has, so she's going to stay average at best because at higher levels of play it's an important mechanic. When Master Roshi was announced and we first found out that he wouldn't have a Super Dash, a lot of people IMMEDIATELY went to the idea of, "Well if he has no Super Dash in any way he'll be low tier" because that is true. Fortunately he has a different option to fit the same purpose of a Super Dash but without that he'd be terrible.
Another example that's a bit of a stretch is CoD MW 2019 and the 725 Shotgun on release. Every other shotgun in the game, as with most FPS games, weren't good past close range. The 725 was a one off that basically said screw it and could 1 shot from longer ranges and more reliably then just about every other gun. It become a game where you could use any gun you want, but as soon as one person brought out a 725 EVERYBODY brought out a 725 because it basically did away with the regular balancing of shotguns and instead was just 1 shots over and over so it was next to impossible to compete.
Slight edit, ash is incredibly useful to the team directly as in the current bulletproof meta soft breach is very powerful, that combined with the flashes for burning ads' or magnets, makes her the best soft breacher to bring for horizontal play.
That bird has better window play than Blackbeard

When blackbeard was released I had no idea that the shield actually had HP... it was only when it got nerfed and i read the patch notes that I realized it had HP lol
And now his shield is at 20 HP, finally putting the nail in the coffin. Goodbye Blackbeard, your legacy will be remembered.

Apparently BB shield had 9000HP at launch. It was shadow nerfed to 800HP like after a week or so.
Try this nerf, having shield on removes the ability to aim and crank shield HP back up so they aren't as fragile.
Plot twist: Ubisoft actually wanted to put 80 hp to blackbeard shield but ubisoft accidentaly added another 0 to blackbeard's shield and made it 800 hp

There are so many gadgets and smart strategies to use against him. If you believe he's currently too OP, you just don't know how to use your head.

back when I started playing (S2) - so, birth of Blackbeard and Valkyrie I used to play with another guy who mained Blackbeard and I think it’s one of the main reasons we won games

It was over 1500 hp on his shield before, 800 hp is a lie that was told by Ubisoft like many others. Lord's OG turret shield Hp is 800. And Fun Fact: ACOGs were actually 3x not 2.5x, they reduced its magnification in Shadow Legacy.

Easy fix: add idle sway when ads, double the recoil on all guns, extra jitter/blur when firing, as long as it makes getting headshots as hard as what it should have been in a realistic situation

The dude that said "takes only a few bullets to get through the shield" doesn't have the brains to realise that it takes BB just **one** to get to yours. Few ≠ 1. He still gets extra lives. THAT'S why he's still fundamentally broken.

Changes his role, sure, but keeps the mechanic-people have to go for bodyshots, but now he's for close counters or small room window peeks.

Blackbeard needs a rework. My idea would be to restore his shield to 150 hp but prevent him from being able to shoot with his shield up, instead give him some utility, maybe some kind of gadget to ping enemies. like he needs a tachanka level rework
They need to be more complex with the ideas than just "Two shields with extra hp". They need to think about how their new operators will affect the meta
I wish his ADS actually aligned with his head for a good change. I hate looking down from angles and they shoo the top of my head with a 1 tap because the alignment is so shitty
He isn't even good anymore. He's just an inherently flawed operator in a game like Siege.
