Is the Trinity Coherent? |

- Опубликовано: 18 сен 2024
- In this livestream, Christian philosopher Dr. William Lane Craig and Muslim apologist Mohammed Hijab discuss the coherence of the Trinity. Dr. Craig defends the Christian view of God as one essence and three persons, while Hijab challenges this from an Islamic perspective, advocating for the oneness of God. This discussion explores deep theological differences on the nature of God, making it a must-watch for those interested in interfaith dialogue.

Hijab failed to demonstrate incoherence, but instead emphasized disagreement among Christians, which was not relevant to the topic of the debate. Rhetorically it can appear strong to accuse WLC of "rejecting the majority of Christianity", but the logical coherence of the Trinity does not stand or fall with popularity. An incorrect understanding may well be incoherent, but again this does not demonstrate that the Trinity itself is incoherent, even if it is a popular misunderstanding, because the incoherence is introduced by a mistaken definition.
WLC demonstrated that there are plausible answers to all of the questions that Hijab raised, and whether Hijab is personally convinced of those does not affect whether the Trinity is logically coherent. Far from WLC needing to prove that the answers he gave to Hijab are necessarily true as a condition for demonstrating coherence, it was Hijab's job to demonstrate why his answers are necessarily impossible, which Hijab failed to do. As such the plausibility of WLC's answers stands and is enough to demonstrate that the Trinity is in fact logically coherent.

Take this L bro, it’s ok I could smell ur cope form here lol.
False.
Based only on the Quran and the bible. The bible is more violent.
If we approach this question with a focus on the plain text of both scriptures without involving scholarly interpretations, we can identify passages from each that discuss warfare. Objectively, both the Bible and the Quran have verses that address conflict, and they contain elements of both defensive and offensive warfare. Here's a direct look at the nature of these texts:
The Bible (Old Testament):
The Old Testament contains numerous verses that describe offensive wars, particularly in the context of the Israelites conquering Canaan, with explicit commands to attack and annihilate certain groups:
Deuteronomy 20:16-17
"But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes, but you shall devote them to complete destruction, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded..."
Joshua 6:21
"They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it-men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, and donkeys."
These verses describe offensive conquests, where entire populations are commanded to be destroyed without any mention of self-defense. The violence here appears to be part of divine instruction for the Israelites to conquer and settle in the land of Canaan.
The Quran:
The Quran, too, contains verses on warfare, but many of them emphasize defensive war or warfare as a reaction to persecution or aggression:
Surah 2:190
"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors."
Surah 22:39-40
"Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory. [They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right..."
These verses clearly suggest a defensive context, allowing Muslims to fight back only if they are attacked or wronged. However, there are also verses in the Quran that can be seen as more aggressive, such as the famous "Verse of the Sword":
Surah 9:5
"And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush..."
This verse, while often cited as evidence of offensive warfare, is part of a broader context of ongoing hostilities between the early Muslims and hostile tribes.
Comparison:
Bible (Old Testament): Contains explicit commands for offensive wars of conquest, often aimed at entire populations with orders to annihilate them. These instructions appear more offensive in nature.
Quran: While there are verses that can be interpreted as allowing for offensive action, the vast majority of the verses concerning warfare emphasize defense-fighting only in response to persecution or aggression, with some specific commands that are tied to historical contexts of the early Muslim community.
Conclusion:
Based purely on the textual content of both scriptures:
The Bible (Old Testament) appears to have more verses that describe offensive warfare-often tied to the conquest of the Promised Land, where entire populations were commanded to be destroyed.
The Quran tends to emphasize defensive warfare, allowing fighting in response to aggression or persecution, though it also contains some verses that suggest preemptive or offensive action, particularly in the context of historical conflicts.
This comparison is based on the plain reading of the texts without interpretation, but both texts must still be understood in the broader context of their respective religious histories.

John is a whole book; just because some minute parts are reliable or semi-reliable or indirectly reliable does not mean that others are not caused by creedal evolution.
3. Please quote Ibn Ishaq. I believe that he only said that the paraclete verse is revelation (which is true). Though, even if he did say that all of it is, it's his opinion that most disagree with. He would disgree with it as well if he read all of John because it contains alot of blasphemy. This is why I find it unlikely that he said all of John is authoritative.

WLC won the debate because he's not a muslim.
Straight out of the gates, Hijab is confrontational and temperamental. He always answers a question with a question, is dismissive and descends into screaming every single time without debating the topic at hand.
Dr. WLC speaks kindly and charitably as though lecturing a first year student who struggles to understand basic tenets in his area of study. Hijab sees himself as the professor while failing to grasp fundamental Christian theology.

Craig: that’s correct

I do applaud Dr. Craig for being able to maintain such composure an patience with Hijab. As for the talking points. I noticed Hijab was quick to dismiss the claim that the Quran was outlining that Allah, Isa, and Mary was the trinity.
[5:116] And when Allah said, "O ‘Isā, son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as two gods, other than Allah'?"
This is further supported by the Quran in earlier passages.
[5:73-75] "Surely Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one god, and if they do not refrain from what they are saying,... The Christ, son of Mary, is nothing except a messenger; indeed, other messengers have gone before him, and his mother is a siddīqah (virtuous person). They were eating the food.
So why does the Quran itself go out of its way to emphasize the humanity of Mary if she supposedly was never divine? The quran is clearly stating that Mary was not divine as she was subjected to human needs. To go further, Quqatil Ibn Sulaiman's commentary on the Quran outlined 3 groups of Christians. As he wrote, Nestorians (Church of the East), who say Isa is the Son of Allah. The Jacobites (Orientals), say Allah is the Messiah. And the Melkites (Byzantines/Orthodox) who say Allah is a third of thee and is a god, and Isa is a god, and Mary is a god.
I think with this evidence, it is safe to say that Hijab is running from the historical position that Muslims had as they did not converse with the Romans about theological doctrine to get a proper understanding of Christian doctrine.
It's really easy to stay calm when you know your opponent has no argument they could possibly pose against you. When God is on your side, how could you ever lose?
i don’t understand why Muhammadan’s have to appeal to arabic terms when engaging with non-arabic speaking audience. does this make them feel a sense of superiority? i am going to start using Greek terms when i am discussing with the Muhammadan’s.
also, the belief in One God is not sufficient for salvation due to the fact that Satan and his demons acknowledge the existence of One God and they can not inherit salvation.
his arabic is very bad 😉
Islam, where Jesus can be both the word and the spirit of Allah yet not divine and a mere messanger.
Islam, where Allah's spirit is the holy spirit who is also Gabriel and also Jesus. Where Gabriel is an angel but also the spirit of God. Where Satan is an angel but also a Jinn.
And where Allah always always knows best.
Allah specifically says don't question just believe (Surah 5:101-102, Surah 3:7)
Amazing how the Muslim reconciles all of this in his head yet is obsessed with how the trinity makes no sense.
What I don’t understand is why Hijab kept saying that Craig does not align with more orthodox positions. Who cares? The debate is not whether orthodox views on the trinity are coherent, but whether the trinity is. Craig offers an account of the trinity, one he believes is based upon NT texts, and defends it. Hijab’s burden in the debate is not alleviated by saying Craig’s view is not orthodox, nor is it met through noting that Islamic doctrine has made similar claims. So long as Craig’s view is Christian, trinitarian and not identical to Islam, it makes no difference.
Of course it makes a difference, the point is that Craig deviates from more orthodox understanding, and thus his views are important to understand of the Trinity is coherent from his understanding
@@mattholt2451it doesnt make a difference. Attacking strawmen is a fallacy. WLC being a heretical protestant and not understanding subordination in the trinity is a whole other issue.

Well-known thinkerS? No, there was just one thinker in the discussion between Hijab and Craig. And it wasn't Hijab. In reality, Hijab is a Muslim propagandist - pretty much a Dawa guy - purposefully Strawmanning every opposing view to his own. He also seems to think volume and interruption constitute a good argument - just like brainless bullies everywhere do.
With their tone of voice anyone can say who is the Christian and Muslim
It's crazy!!! Muslims are always angry and arrogant. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
The contrast between debate styles is the check mate in God's strategy. It reveals to us a very important truth about the temperament of the individual that is attracted to one argument or the other.
I don't follow a religion that's ok with marrying 6yr olds
You follow a religion where the Arch-prophet Moses went out of his way to take children as sex slaves after massacring tribes. Might want to read the old testament bud.
Can't believe this is even a real debate. Christianity is vastly more coherent, developed and sound, while Islam is childish, unintelligible, and takes itself way more seriously than it actually is. Craig and Hijab reflect this quite well, the two of them personally being the perfect illustration encapsulating the differences between Christianity and Islam.
