I am a cowboy chord guitar player, but I love seeing your videos. My wife died from breast cancer a year ago and I am still grieving. Your videos dull the pain and distract me from my misery. Thanks Sean from Scotland
Yes Google Prince's mad cat guitar and you will get a world of information and why he chose it to be used on certain songs. Great guitar great player much history.
Yes one of the greatest ever I looked it up and Google said he did play a fender telecaster until 1980 and then switched to the Horner Im a big Prince fan and wondered why I never saw a fender telecaster identical to his and with stripes on back that's why thanks buddy now I want one of those horners ide hate to see the price 👍
I dunno about shielding paint, but I recently started shielding my guitars with copper tape and the difference it makes to pickup noise is pretty incredible.. enough that one shielding job convinced me to do it to all of my guitars. Has to be done properly though; being certain that all the shielding is electrically continuous and properly grounded at the end. Otherwise it does basically nothing.
It's a copy of a "PRINCE" Madhatter guitar. HS Anderson made them and so did Hohner. They have been out of stock on these at Firefly for months but are back in stock now. I just looked. I have one by Firefly and also one by HS Anderson. A real one can bring 4,500 to 6,000 dollars or more. Nice video!
Prince was one of the best guitar players out there. He was a Jehovah. Witness, and he actually went out in Minneapolis dressed in the “ uniform “ of the Witnesses and canvassed. He got a lot of skill from playing “worship music “ . Believe it or not, but during the solo of Purple Rain, I just feel that need to put my hands in the air and a tear will come to your eye. You feel visited by the Spirit. He surely had his vices, but I feel it in his music to this day. And feel free to think as you wish, but he was someone special on the guitar.
My buddy purchased a strat version from Guitars Garden. He said it plays every bit as nice as his Fender Deluxe. And he paid less than $200 - Stainless frets, locking tuners, alnico pups... it's crazy.
I got one from aliexpress and replaced the controls and pickups. It rocks, has a great neck on it. I put strat pickups in it like it had, just like Prince.
In 2022 I bought a Firefly 338 (Gibson ES-335 knockoff) brand new on ebay for $250 and I am nothing but impressed with it. Gorgeous blueburst on black finish, white binding, pearl inlay fretboard. Nice detailing. Stays in tune, plays nice and beautiful tone/sustain.
I have 5 Fireflys I got over a 2 year span. 3 Les Paul types and 2 Explorer types. One of the Explorer ones matches my 1981 Ibanez Destroyer in that gorgeous red I've had since 1983. The electronics in all of mine were junk and microphonic. I put active EMG pickups in the Les Paul guitars and passive EMG pickups in the Explorer guitars with all new controls as well. Did a basic setup and that's it. Frets were good, they stay in tune very well and sound amazing. Can't ask for much more than that for a cheap guitar. They play as good and sound as good as my Destroyer and my Brothers early 80's Gibson Explorer. Great video!!!
Was impressed, watching and listening to you do your stuff. Anew fan & subscriber for sure. As far for Firefly. If its good enough for a countryboy its good enough for me. Thank You , Brother.👍
I got one of these 3 weeks ago, it’s a very nice guitar for the price. Mine also needed a truss rod adjustment and a little intonation, but my frets were very smooth. I’ll probably be buying another different style from Firefly in the near future.
Beautiful sound, I wish I could put a5s. with cloth wire and full size pots in my MIM Tele, that is great. It has Almico 5s in it but they are Tele pickups. That is something new. Strat pickups in a Tele. Mine has the U style neck and 7.25 radius.
I have that same guitar, I did a setup on mine but lucky me, the frets were level all the way, and the neck was perfect. I replaced the stock pups with Tex-Mex neck and bridge, the only drawback is the weight, but I can deal with that little bit of extra weight. Thanks for another great video Sean/Cathy.
I was looking for a telecaster and found this video after watching others. That cheap I figured why not buy one. It came last week and it was beautiful out of box. The set up was wacked with bad buzzing on most strings. It was easy to fix but I agree the nickel strings are to light and tinny sounding. Set-up it plays and sounds great. Mine didn't need fret work. Buy one you won't regret it. At least I don't.
So happy to hear your opinion of the Mad Cat! Mine is on the way. I've never done fretwork like you, hopefully it won't need it, or else it's time to learn a new skill! Great stuff, Rock On!
I have a firefly FFLP “yellow bat” which is a set neck Les Paul style guitar. I like it but I think I might need to switch out the pups, or at least the neck pup. Wish I was a little closer to you and you had time to give mine a once over but it’d be a lot to ship down to you. They do seem to be nice budget guitars.
Sean you don’t seem to ever miss a beat, I just ordered one of these, but it’s coming from Harley Benton, man I love watching you do these less expensive but good enough guitar videos, salute!
It is modeled after the Mad Cat Guitar that Prince Played . He wanted strat pick ups in it then the standard tele style set up. Prince always played that guitar that was built for him.
Recently received my Firefly 338. First I have to say I do not see excess glue anywhere, including the nut where it has been noted in many previous reviews. Frets were well polished and I did not find file marks on the ends, smooth the entire length of the neck. Fit and finish was above average, I own much more expensive guitars that don’t look as good. Looking across the finish from the side, where pits and other imperfections show the most, did not reveal any. Playability: strings 1 through 5 are perfect all the way up the neck. The low E 6 string started to buzz at about the 12th fret. Checking the bridge height on 6 showed it was a little low. Made the adjustment and buzz went away. Tiny adjustment just to raise the bridge end a fraction. Pot all good and the locking tuners hold tune fine. I know folks say these are hit or miss, I think I got a home run… especially at this price.
I have those nasally ceramic ones in the Silvertone and it has the olive green caps on what look like 250ks 6 screw trem. The rout is is big enough for 2 Hs so that’s what I am going to do. A pair of Cathybuckers for sure! The pots look older, they have a raised outer ring and the center is beveled down. I don’t know if it’s the caps or the pickups that give it that nasal tone. I ll have to get a pickguard and figure out how to solder. The closer I get the worse I do. I l figure it out.
This one did it I'm gonna pull out my old harmony stratish my mom bought from the old Fingerhut the old school amozon when i was 12. I did some fretwork, played with intonation and painted it. But now I know what all that is I'm going to resurrect it it was handed down to brothers and sisters and now back in my hands. That's enough flip flap~~~ let's go order me some parts
The back bow on that neck came back around ..the backbowed neck on my fender vintera never came back around I slackened the truss rod right of till it was loose ,over tuned the strings and left it for a week to see if we could get it to come back around .nope it was a junker .had to go back to fender .and it being a limited edition of fifty in Europe there wasn’t any more .so I bought a Gibson sg standard instead ,now that one was fine .
lol!!! man …. your wife has one hell of a swing!!! watch out next time lol!!!! u both are amazing and thx for the outstanding videos you both make 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I picked up a HSS strat last year and it awesome. Great specs; even the bridge has a full-size counterweight. After a set of Bootstrap pickups, it is an incredible instrument. However, I just received a new semi-hollow Tele with a bigsby. Nice looking instrument, but the chemical odor coming from inside the body is so strong and offensive, I am sending it back. Not sure if it is the glue or some sealer they used. Have to wonder if these Chinese chemicals are dangerous to our health. I'm not taking any chances.
I have a FF tele model, about 3 months old, with 2 humbuckers, and tuneoatic stoptail, a very nice neck with rosewood. Beautiful, neck is super, pups sound goog to me. Just a bit heavy, but love it. Thankfully, no neck or fret problems. Was thinking about that mad cat model for a while. Funny, I like the look 😮, and everything you mentioned. I just don't want bad fret work as I have never done that and would have to pay to get it done.
Hey just a FYI it is pretty rare that ff needs fret work. But they will exchange it if you let them know in 5 days, they replaced a guitar for me that had a broken neck like 3 weeks after I received it I never had time to look at it until then and they stood behind it even though it was shipping damage.
You're not a Prince fa obviously but i already subscribed and STILL like your channel. I got that guitar about 3 months ago and I love it. Honestly I STILL have to get it set up...High B and E frets are pretty dead from frets 1-3 and need to change the strings but on different setting (sounds) this mutha ROCKS!!!!!!!!! GREAT HONEST REVIEW and I'm STILL a fan of your channel. Keep em coming bro!
Found this video today & fell in love with this guitar. Only problem is I can't find a way to buy it. Firefly website doesn't appear to sell them. Amazon search shows me everything but Firefly's. I'm bummed. Looking at maybe getting a Sire S3 instead.
This guitar is supposed to be a replica/tribute of Princes Madcat Tele, thus the weird pickguards and binding. Firefly tend to make short runs of guitars, rather than mass produce a few guitar models. The more limited edition ones will sellout almost immediately. The pickups they use in their Tele's are Korean made Alinco 5's and I felt no need to replace them. The only thing I upgraded was adding a 4-way switch to run the pickups in series. You should definitely show the viewers the four way switch mod on a future Tele review. It cost almost nothing to install , and gives you a higher output "humbucker" tone.
I have one of these, frets were fine, neck was fine, played great out the box. Tuner? Um, i still have changed them. You should check out their Ghost John 5 HH Tele, that thing is a beast!
Probably not sounding as bright as it did before because I'm pretty sure they put nickel strings on from the factory. So not really cheap strings. I have a 335 of theirs. They are nice guitars. Bone nut too. Full size pots and not bad pickups. Had to do a truss rod adjustment also. Some high frets. I just knocke um down with a hammer and they were fixed. Nut was too tight on 2 strings. Had to file it. Quality guitars if you don't mind a little work.
Another awesome video for scarred nation! Nice telecaster but not as nice as the one o received from y'all yesterday. Thanks and keep up the great work
That is Firefly's cope of the famous Prince Mad Cat Telecaster. Prince played it with Strat pickups. If your buddy wanted a regular telecaster then he should not have bout this one. I have one and after a good set up it plays like a dream. Love this guitar and I am also a big Prince fan.
I found a Hohner Prinz in a pawn shop here in Arkansas...dusty, some rust & neck pocket cracks to boot...I wrangled the owner down to $100 USD. Glued up the cracks, dropped a fender 5 way switch in it & wired it to put the pickups in phase in position 4 & out of phase in position 2. It was awesome...the bridge & position 2 tthrew enough TWANG to make any country player envious. Hate that I sold it for money to buy a Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion III. It was awesome too but too damn pretty to play in public.
@neotoxo54 Hello from Arkansas, which I've been back and fourth here over the years and all over the USA & the World !!! Amazing what you find in Pawn Shops, Ect. and save lots of bucks and usually minimum work and parts needed. It's the Mark Ups that get me but I usually get a decent deal struck in Pawn Shops, Mom & Pop Shops Musician's Friend & Sweetwater, ECT. Whereby all my music gear is concerned, I'mm constantly asked, "What You Gonna Do With All Of That In The Future ??? I say, "I'll sell what I can and leave the rest to playing buddies or up & coming gonna stick with it promising younger Musicologists !!! Cheers FretBro . . . 👍🆒🎸🤘🎼😀🇺🇸🙏 DDH 3-267-2024.
Hello Sean, just curious if you would do a review of the Batking lp style to see if it may be a viable option seems to have good reviews but not that many as of yet would love to see your opinion
Ordered mine today . This will be my 3rd Firefly as I ajso have a Super Strat and an acoustic cutaway from them . For the level of quality vs what they are asking for them, its hard to stop buying them...
Is it called a leopard? It has a snarl in the neck position. Sounds great after your setup! I enjoy the whole family’s channels. Raising my spirits a lot. My granddaughter is 13 and just started lessons and my buddy says she is s natural. I gave her my Epiphone LesPaul Special 2 with a good setup and a set of Billy Gibbons “Reverend Willy .007s “ she is starting out singing too, the best way to learn! I miss being a teenager and building my own first pawn shop ‘ caster.
Great review!...but every time I see you open the boxes with your Bowie knife ..I think the motto should be. "Dont you dare try and steal my Scarred guitar."( or pickups, for that matter)
I Love that guitar. Different looking, but it is a copy of the Purple One's favorite tele. If I didn't have 2 tele's already, I'd buy one. I've cut myself off for a while. I have 15 stringed instruments. Guitars, 2 bass', a banjo, and a guittarele.
@lucyfuir6386 I have 3 amps, microphones, an interface, 10 pedals, an electronic drum kit, a keyboard, and a harmonica, too. I just can't stop buying equipment, but I can't buy anymore until I move. I Need more space!
Terrific sustain, more than my 2022 Fender Player MIM Telecastor. Your Firefly would not have sounded as good without your skillful work on the neck and frets. Well done.
I like everything about that tele, apart from the bow in the neck, i mostly go the les paul route but do have a cabro with f'trons so this is not a million miles from that, good work reanimating that corpse sean it sounded great.
I said I am done buying china guitars. O.K..., Firefly has some really nice guitars. I have an LP style that played great right out of the box. So i ordered the FFST Classic Relic model over the weekend. And then i am never buying a china guitar ever again... LOL ya right...!
Really tempted by this one but never played a maple fingerboard, they look like they'd be prone to be really sticky? I've already gone through several of the original Monoprice Indio Teles when they were string through for $109. I was able to shape those headstocks to a decent Tele look. I'm always put off slightly by guitars that are so heavily associated with one player, like the Hofner Bass, the Frankenstrat copies or this one. I love the original players but they've become so heavily tied into specific guitars. That's just a me thing I should work on :) I really appreciate seeing you do the work on inexpensive guitars, makes it easier to take the plunge and if I screw it up... then I screw it up. I do enjoy the trying process quite a bit.
Watch the RUclips video of Prince Playing while my guitar gently weeps 2021 Remaster "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood. 3:30 it's pure Prince perfection showmanship and respect for this great song. Enjoy.
Just on body looks alone, I'm glad that is your friend's guitar. From this video, I don't recall the pickup swap happening ? The gloss poly tinted neck though is gorgeous, but the fretwork was way worse than the Mpnoprice $ 90 Tele & quite a few of the sub $ 250 guitars you've reviewed. If those were the original pickups in the sound demo, they sounded like the guitar didn't need the 1/4 lber pair. The pickguards, well just assume that a standard issue chrome ashtray style Fender bridge would have replaced the original fixed bridge part(s) for whatever it took. The tuners, maybe those get swapped as well. I'll take your word that this was the best of the affordable guitars, I just think it needed too much fretwork to make that call on that alone. Since we're being totally honest, I think the Monoprice TL with the Tex Mex pickup swap edges the FireFly TL across the board for everything except the gloss poly tint maple neck's finish & ball end SS frets.
I just got this exact model guitar and mine is perfect right out the box. Action is fine , intonation was spot on , frets - no problems. Don't let one bad quality control issue steer you away , for $200 its a helluva guitar.
They DO sell those, but not all the time, and when they're in they sell out quickly, like most of their specialty models do. The one I saw was Very beautiful. Google it.
Just sold my Firefly SG , it was a killer guitar though. Not one flaw or blemish and the fret work was excellent , I don't know how they do it for what they charge 🤔
My $180 Firefly Les Paul may not be perfect Les Paul aesthetics the action is low and it resonates beautifully. I hear top studio musicians talk about their $3000/$4000 guitars saying "It nearly plays itself". The Firefly may not play it self, but the ride is definitely a pleasure.
Cathy has a new video comin up tomorrow! You'll get to hear her strat pick ups!!
www.youtube.com/@ScarMyPickups
Awsome can't wait
I think the binding and pickguard is "tortoise shell." That's a Prince Hohner copy.
I am a cowboy chord guitar player, but I love seeing your videos. My wife died from breast cancer a year ago and I am still grieving. Your videos dull the pain and distract me from my misery. Thanks Sean from Scotland
Got to keep the two Strat pups in it. That's how Prince wanted it and what makes it different than regular Tele styles.
This guitar is a copy of Prince's famous Mad Cat guitar originally by Hohner. Keep up the great vids.
I thought princes guitar was a Japanese fender learn something new every day had no idea it was a horner
DAMN!!! You'd beat me to it!!! As soon as he'd unwrapped it I said to myself Prince's guitar!!!
Yep! As soon as I seen the thumbnail, I knew exactly what it was a copy of.
Nice copy of a 70s Mad Cat, the guitar Prince used throughout his career.
Best guitar channel on the internet. Period.
Thank you kindly!
I've been shielding since the late 70s. Originally did it with mom's aluminum foil lol
Nice video!
Man I am SO GLAD I found this channel I REALLY Love you and Kathy
I remember when your cap Looked like new, now it looks good all broken in and stuff! Love your channel.
Seriously, laughed at the end…
40K subs!!! Awesome!!!
Laughing my arse off here when Cathy shows who's boss 🤣🤣🤣 I've rewound that part a few times.
Sean, that guitar sounds frickin brilliant !!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol, yeah. so funny

Yeah, they are pretty good. I got about 12 FF guitars. Every time they release a new model, I scoop up my favorite finish.
Great Videos. Appreciate the Firefly video. I have a firefly Les Paul copy I got worked into a REALLY nice guitar. New locking tuners right off.
I have 5 Fireflys I got over a 2 year span. 3 Les Paul types and 2 Explorer types. One of the Explorer ones matches my 1981 Ibanez Destroyer in that gorgeous red I've had since 1983. About time you found the light! Congratulations. I have over a dozen Firefly guitars and they are all keepers with minimal work
Yep me too I have 20 less that one.
The PRINCE TELE!!!
That's an HS Anderson/Hohner Madcat copy but with the Firefly headstock
Was impressed, watching and listening to you do your stuff. Anew fan & subscriber for sure. As far for Firefly. If its good enough for a countryboy its good enough for me. Thank You , Brother.👍
The binding is called Tortoise Shell
It plays good because you did your magic.
I got one of these 3 weeks ago, it’s a very nice guitar for the price. Mine also needed a truss rod adjustment and a little intonation, but my frets were very smooth. I’ll probably be buying another different style from Firefly in the near future.
How much do you think it Weighs?
I'm learning so much about fret work. Thanks so much.
Beautiful sound, I wish I could put a5s. with cloth wire and full size pots in my MIM Tele, that is great. It has Almico 5s in it but they are Tele pickups. That is something new. Strat pickups in a Tele. Mine has the U style neck and 7.25 radius.

great video dude!
Looks like the HS Anderson Medcat -Hohner tele guitar
The Prince's guitar!
Copy of his Hohner copy. Yowza.

That is a beauty. Wow, they really stepped up their game in the last couple years.
So happy to hear your opinion of the Mad Cat! Mine is on the way. I've never done fretwork like you, hopefully it won't need it, or else it's time to learn a new skill! Great stuff, Rock On!
I just got one and it plays fine with no issues , great deal for $228.

I have one of those FF humbucker teles too, in metallic blue. It's based on what Fenfer calls a Parallel Universe 'Troublemaker', google it for info

what a beautiful instrument
Bro Cathy keeps hitting you in the head and we ain't gonna be gettin these cool videos much longer!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you were to upgrade tuning keys, whats a good choice for a cheap guitar that stay in tune????
That's just it, there aren't any. Might as well get some grovers and avoid headaches.

11:33 straight to the chickin' pickin', Thanks for the licks man!
My Harley Benton with Roswell pickups is the best $100-150 stock tele around.
I always liked princess mad cat! Think they did a good job doing their version!
Love your channel. You can fix any issue and make any piece of wood with strings sound good!
Congrats on the +40K subs.
Probably not sounding as bright as it did before because I'm pretty sure they put nickel strings on from the factory. So not really cheap strings. I have a 335 of theirs. They are nice guitars. It's a "Prince" Hohner copy, But the head is different ✌🏾
This is a killer copy of the guitar icon Prince's Madcat !! Sweet guitar and a dead on copy!!!
Another awesome video for scarred nation! Nice telecaster but not as nice as the one o received from y'all yesterday. Thanks and keep up the great work
I love the Big Cat aesthetics. Wish I could get a bass with that style.
I've got a idea that might help. Football helmet. Invest in a good quality football helmet. 😮
Country boy blues hair 65 year old songwriter been playing the same strap for 45 years
That is Firefly's cope of the famous Prince Mad Cat Telecaster. Prince played it with Strat pickups. If your buddy wanted a regular telecaster then he should not have bout this one. I have one and after a good set up it plays like a dream. Love this guitar and I am also a big Prince fan.
Bout or Bought? 😂
@@gabemanson8918 , I guess my typing out paced my brain, and a proofread would have helped
@neotoxo54
Hello from Arkansas, which I've been back and fourth here over the years and all over the USA & the World !!!
NEW FFTL MAD CAT ELECTRIC GUITARS ( TRANSPARENT YELLOW COLOR )BCTY
$199.91
Nice video with great info, thanx man. And dang gotta like Cathy, she's one hell of a good shot.
btw... I've not bought one of those cheapie axes.
Ordered mine today . This will be my 3rd Firefly as I ajso have a Super Strat and an acoustic cutaway from them . For the level of quality vs what they are asking for them, its hard to stop buying them...
I don't hate. That's an amazing tool. As Scrooge McDuck always says, "Work smarter, not harder." That's working smart.
It is a madcat
Best guitar reviewer and tech on RUclips !!! That ain't no lie.
I love my firefly LP!
New strings take few times to get set in.
Great review!...but every time I see you open the boxes with your Bowie knife ..I think the motto should be. "Dont you dare try and steal my Scarred guitar."( or pickups, for that matter)
Better get to winding some more cuz those belong to me.... Smack!!!
Dude Belly laugh does not describe how hard that cracked me up... Love the show!
I think the binding is imitation tortoise shell
I Love that guitar. Different looking, but it is a copy of the Purple One's favorite tele. If I didn't have 2 tele's already, I'd buy one. I've cut myself off for a while. I have 15 stringed instruments. Guitars, 2 bass', a banjo, and a guittarele.
Haha I got 17 plus more amps than that lol
@lucyfuir6386 I have 3 amps, microphones, an interface, 10 pedals, an electronic drum kit, a keyboard, and a harmonica, too. I just can't stop buying equipment, but I can't buy anymore until I move. I Need more space!

Yeah baby sold
Terrific sustain, more than my 2022 Fender Player MIM Telecastor. Your Firefly would not have sounded as good without your skillful work on the neck and frets. Well done.
I like everything about that tele, apart from the bow in the neck, i mostly go the les paul route but do have a cabro with f'trons so this is not a million miles from that, good work reanimating that corpse sean it sounded great.
I want to see your p90's that you made like a telly pick up with the metal base plate used on something🤔
Ok soon
I have a Korean Squier tele that was perfect in the store. Brand new, buying a 100 watt Marshall combo, it cost me $80.00 Hasn’t needed a thing.
I said I am done buying china guitars. O.K..., Firefly has some really nice guitars. I have an LP style that played great right out of the box. So i ordered the FFST Classic Relic model over the weekend. And then i am never buying a china guitar ever again... LOL ya right...!
Love your show. From Orlando
That's just a me thing I should work on :)
I really appreciate seeing you do the work on inexpensive guitars, makes it easier to take the plunge and if I screw it up... then I screw it up.
Enjoy.
It's definitely designed tp look like Prince's main Tele, which I believe was actually a Hondo.
That is a copy of Prince's Tele style guitar originally made by Hoener, I believe.
Correct: Hohner Mad Cat. I sold them in a music store in the mid 70s. They made CBS teles look like toy copies
I just got mine and have the same problems. It cost $229 with shipping costs.
Looks like a Prince hohner guitar. Beautiful!
It's a tribute, rather than a 1 to 1 replica of Prince's Madcat Tele. For under $200, it's a pretty sweet guitar.
Since we're being totally honest, I think the Monoprice TL with the Tex Mex pickup swap edges the FireFly TL across the board for everything except the gloss poly tint maple neck's finish & ball end SS frets.
ordered mine today. Next week cant soon enough for me..
Sheesh she need a set up. Thanks for the warning
And thank you for all the shoutouts!
I just got this exact model guitar and mine is perfect right out the box. Action is fine , intonation was spot on , frets - no problems. Don't let one bad quality control issue steer you away , for $200 its a helluva guitar.
I am looking for an SSS tele , wish they would have put a third in the middle, because I would buy one of these beauties if they had.
They DO sell those, but not all the time, and when they're in they sell out quickly, like most of their specialty models do.
The one I saw was Very beautiful. Google it.
Answer: YES
Loving your channel brother. Cheers from Cali! What is the natural multi-wood tele over your right shoulder? Thanks!
