Built a spalted maple top black binding tele kit a few years back. Drilled for string through, changed ALL hardware and added six way tele switch. Burst lacquer paint job and back.
I'm surprised I liked and never commented on this video. I built my tele kit. I added Alnico 5 pickups, bronze bridge, black pickguard and slapped some D'Addario's on. I painted mine a deep red. I'm going to do string through once I get a press for my drill from TEMU.

I bought this kit around Christmas just redid it recently, made it a string through and leveled the frets, balled the ends too. Love the show and thanks for sharing.
Brings back memories. Got a DC Axe, 2 PU Gibson knockoff of a dual humbucker Melody Maker, like Ibanez makes. Replaced the cheap parts and put in P94's. It is one of my favorite guitars. Didn't know jack when I started. But by the time I finished, I have never had to pay for a setup, again. And I got a guitar with a good neck and a good sound.
I have been building my own guitars for a few months now.. I've built a 72 copy of a Gibson destroyer accidently sold it for 800. That lit a fire Ive built a few strats then some Telecaster builds .. I am now building three semi hollw body builds I have been doing my own inlay on the necks .. You can build a total custom guitar for cheap
I built a diy Tele kit from Bex Gears off Amazon about 3-4 years ago I replaced and upgraded the hardware , electronics and pickups. I painted it and everything , it was my first one and came out pretty decent. The neck was phenomenal and easily as nice as some of my guitars that cost upwards of $600. I'll definitely do another one in the future...
I really enjoy all your videos but this one may be my favorite. I have no mechanical aptitude whatsoever but I'm still tempted to try building a guitar kit. Great job!🤠🤠
Im building a big hollow jazz box. Set neck, no back plates and wiring through the sound hole. This is my first attempt at a kit like this but it has a great finish and all aftermarket parts. Just waiting for the neck/body glue to dry. It should be great! btw I have never seen a guitar kit with a set of instructions.
A Kit is a Great way to go if You don't have all the power tools needed to cut out & route one... Never had a Tele, May just need to Build one of those Kits ! Thanks for the Video & See Y'All Tonight.. Forever Scarred !!!
I just finished one. It’s a lot of fun. I am really happy with it. If you already have tools, paints, clear coats etc it will be cheaper. If you are starting with nothing and thinking this is a way to save money to get a guitar? Go buy a finished one. But if you want to dip your toe in the water, it’s totally worth it.

I'll have to try some out again at some point, I haven't been able get away from D'Addario strings on guitar, had good luck with cheap bass strings, but strings and cables are still costing me an arm and a leg, comparatively.. that and I've really been enjoying their baritone mediums 14 through 68's 🥵 they're sounding incredible on my hardtail SSS Strat clone
Ive done 2 of these now and just a warning if your wierd like me and clearcoat your paint jobs. These will release air bubbles do not bake clear it and walk away. Youll have to sand it and reclear it multiple times anyway to get all the air bubbles out. 2 coats of primer and sanding before painting helps alot.
I could have bet all the money I don’t have that you’d make this video . . . and that it would end up blue!! That wheel paint adds a nice metallic sheen on there - great idea. I keep hoping I’ll be able to build a guitar someday, even if it’s just a kit. There’s nothing like making things with your own hands, right?! (I come from a genetic pool of artists and carpenters - I’ve only tried my hand at the former, not the latter.) It’s not just about slapping the parts on a kit and calling it a day, but the therapeutic process and trying to build the best guitar you can. On top of that, it’s also about creative expression - tone wise, putting different parts, and then making it your own with the finish (you don’t have to just paint or stain - go hog wild with materials!). Of course, playing and admiring something you mostly made yourself will always put a smile on your face. One disappointment is that the neck is only 21 frets. I wonder if their other kits have necks with 22 or 24 frets. Oh and the bridge rattling. They either need a better bridge or to route for ferrels. If I offered another point of advice, everyone always ends up upgrading the farty sounding pickups. Maybe they can just charge a small up-charge to get an upgraded kit with better pickups and pots - maybe with some resistors/capacitors like orange drops, bumblebees, or those reddish/brownish ones already soldered on. Or offer it as an add-on kit, but I figure it makes sense to offer an upgraded kit so nobody is paying for crappy parts they won’t use. And btw, good move to include pickups with quick connects because the soldering part is often what stops people from trying to build kits - honestly, I have no clue why ALL pickups are just made with quick connects these days, including those from major manufacturers (it’s easier to cut them off if you need to solder onto your other parts, but if you don’t have to solder, why deter people?). The booklet itself has a lot of value including a template for the headstock and very clear diagrams/instructions. I’ve never seen a kit online that says it comes with two pick guards and shielding - and it’s the foil kind, not the messy crappy black paint that requires at least 2-3 coats. For the price they’re asking, these kits are a HUGE value. Imagine if they have a sale. Not you gotta get the guys at IYV to top this kit. Let’s start a kit war, lol. Good for the companies. Good for the manufacturers. Let’s see what you can do to top this kit, IYV! (And send me a sample for coming up with the challenge, lol! 😉😂)
I build my own guitars and not only it is very therapeutic, it is also very satisfying to build something with your own hands. We were just not designed to sit behind desks all day pushing 1's and 0's all day. And yes, it is sad to see a 21 fret neck being included, but I reckon its basically standard with Fender so they probably figured why bother. As for upgrade options, I reckon they could never offer all the options, so you would still end up with limited choices. In which case I would prefer to source everything myself. As for soldering, I have no clue as to why it puts the fear of God into so many guitarists. It is not that hard and it is need to know skills for a musician playing an amplified instrument. Murphy will ensure that something will fail that you can fix with a multimeter and a soldering iron. And youtube became big (and its basically the only thing it is still good for) by having tutorials on doing EVERYTHING! I learned how to build a guitar neck with LED's as dot markers from youtube.
@@davidcollin1436 I've bought a few of their pickups too. They seem fine. I'm with Glenn Fricker on pickups, they rarely make the huge difference that guitarists think they do. So as long as they give sound and are not microphobic most pickups will do. I do know that Sean HATES GF though. He thinks the stuff they sell is cheap trash.
Everybody needs a 10mm socket, because if you are a mechanic, you always lose the 10mm for some weird reason. Mechanics usually have extra 10mm sockets.
I have an idea for you Sean. In the automotive world kit cars are offered so people can own extremely rare or extremely expensive cars. You could build your own guitar kits and bring back some old classics or unaffordable guitars. The original Fender Bullet was only offered in 81 and 82. When these guitars are done right they look and play better than a Telecaster. I say that because I own one so don't get the OCD fired up. I can see it now---- The Scarred Bullet--- up there with the Shelby Cobras. Just a thought.

I did a headless kit from Leo Jaymz. I gave a hundred bucks for it. It came out pretty nice. But the first time I went to tune it up, one of the tuners fell off in my hand. They would not replace cuz it was past warranty. Even though I had to finish it and put it together. I can tune it and it stays pretty good, but I really wanted it to be right. Nice content buddy
Just started one of these kits for my granddaughter except I decided to go with the Poplar body because it seemed it may be lighter weight and easier to do some shaping I wanted to do. I did some contours for the belly and armrest that came out pretty cool. Been documenting the progress on my channel but got a little interrupted by a hurricane.
I have my same guitar I got in the 8th grade and I'm 50 now. My poor guitar needs a lot of work. I'm tempted to get a kit and build one, or get a Harley Benton or other affordable guitar. I'm not sure which way to go. I've never built one and don't have any special tools but I do have normal hand tools. Whatever I get will be for playing at home by myself or maybe jamming with a friend, but no gigs or anything profesional. So I'm curious what you recommend, buy a built guitar and maybe upgrade parts later, or build one and eventually change the pickups and tuners? I'd like to have a green guitar with the wood grain visible, so I'd probably stain it if I do it myself.
Sean/Shawn, my table saw doesn't cut curves as nice as your band saw in 16:54 or there bouts. And I DON'T have an oscillating drum-belt sander. But I love your idear for the paint job, with the blue chrome over the blue. That gives me ideas for doing a sunburst with metallic paint. Otherwise, I'm right with ya in terms of putting that kit together the way I want. I have the tools to check & fix frets & stuff. And a drill press. But I'm not sure I'd be happy to just swap the magnets in the pups. That doesn't solve all problems, but it's worth a try - might have a interesting sound! BTW, swapping the magnets won't change the resistance of the coils. Why would you think that? It might change the inductance though. You always want less. I love your finished guitar. Especially if YOU love it. All I care bout is if it sounds good, and plays good. If it looks cool, like a sunburst with metallic paint, that's even better. I'ma gwina do it. 🤪 👍 👌
Scar, I can't believe you sprayed that beautiful body with high heat engine rattle can paint from autozone, lol !! That once was a beautiful body that should of been stained, then a coat of sanding sealer, sanded and finallt spray about 3 to 5 coats of clear w/ sanding in-between each until the final coat....
@scarmyguitar I know, lol, I hear ya. After watching your video, I plan on doing just that. If I'm being honest, I was a bit shocked because that blue rattle can paint actually turned out really nice. You did a great job on that!! I work with wood and high-end finishes, so when I see a nice piece of wood with graining etc I always imagine stain with a nice lacquer finish. Love what you're doing, your channels 💯🤙🏼

This is a good show. Ive built 3 guitars from parts ,I play them more than my older expensive ones ,They are as good as any off the rack 900 to 1200.00 .I like this scar guy, He shows people what they can do if they try .And hes rite ,Its just wood.The same wood ,Ive never used a kit ,Ill have to try one.
There are actually a few companies that make plug and play kits. Bex Guitars and Solo come to mind immediately, plus Guitar Fetish offers a complete plug and play system with prewired harnesses, pickups, and the output jack. I do think it's odd that they included a plug and play setup with a paddle headstock. A soldering iron is cheap and much easier to learn to use properly than a router. 🤣
After watching your video I went to Amazon and bought one of these, it looks and sounds spectacular, unfortunately I'm going to have to take it to a store to adjust the intonation and action but it's worth every penny.

I was all set to get one of these and attempt to build it and then noticed all the tools necessary/ needed for building and setting one up appropriately. I like that you had so much listed what was needed and where to get it. What about the template? Maybe I overlooked where that was. I could use the dremel tool, but I've no clue how much to take out. Anywho, awesome video as usual.
That kit wasn't bad at all, I thought it was cool they included the black and white pickguards to give you some choice in the flavor. Six saddle bridge and string through body, I agree with 100,000%. Love the pro tip on correcting the fitment issues you might find like the control pocket being too small. I saw you remove the nut, did you "adjust" it or replace it with a bone nut? I think the finish you got was pretty damn good too. I know you must know how to make that finish like glass/mirror finish if you wanted to> I also know that doing that would take forever and it isn't necessary or that cool. Your finish has character and the character will become better with wear, tear and age because we know your scarred guitar ain't no closet queen! Love you man, I'll say hey at 10 tonight.
@@frankhughes5702 Page probably prefers them, due to time and convenience. Pop a string and quickly get another one back in. I dont have a problem with top loaders, but if you have a choice of choosing a top loader or through body, without much of a price difference, through body is a better choice any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
@@1980bwc It does make for a jangley sound and I kinda like it. Now, I could be wrong on this theory but I think top loaded is also easier on strings and you won't break as many in my experience I've been top loading for three years and haven't broken a string yet and I play my strings forever before changing them
I have encountered the same bridge rattle problem with top-loader six-saddle tele bridges but I didn't consider fixing it by stringing through the body- I just put a piece of foam under the springs! What causes the rattle? Is it that the top-loaded strings don't exert enough downforce on the saddles?

I was curious why you put sealant on the guitar neck after staining, but did not seal the body paint. This is not a criticism. I know he sprayed it but with rattle cans if you want you can wet sand up until whatever sheen you want and then cut / polish and achieve a pretty glossy finish without clear coating and some of the rattle can clears don’t seem to cure right it’ll chip and peal and bubble up off the base coat, of course it’s possible that I used the wrong clear or in the wrong conditions but you can get a really sweet Matt finish with just a couple coats of spray paint and then dry sand it and paint again until you build it up level then you can work your way up to whatever sheen you desire with sand paper and finish with buffing and polish you’ll have to do that with a clear coat anyway so why not skip the clear and build it up with color and polish it ? That’s my take on it unless you’re using a self leveling pour on epoxy I think you can achieve a better finish with elbow grease and no clear coating.
Bro, thank you for what you do on RUclips. You've sparked up some motivation in me to where I definitely want to try a DIY guitar. Only thing is, I don't have guitar tech tools. I'm somewhat picky with the body style of my guitars. The Strat body is ok but the body that really does it for me is the Les Paul. I've looked on Amazon and those LP style guitars don't do it for me. But, there are a couple a different style flying V's witch are the one's I'll get. I don't do any E-bay. My sister in-law shops E-bay and from what I've seen from there it's used stuff. I don't want used stuff. Who else makes DIY guitars I can choose from? Keep up the great work bro, your awesome.
Why don't Telecasters ever have Stratocaster tremolo systems in them with the Spring cavity in back, and contoured bodies with the Belly cut. ..or Do they, ..?🤔

I looked at bexgears And found it extremely strange that the site says they can't deliver outside of America when they have a shop in Canada Ontario How does that make sense
So, if you don't have a belt sander, rough cut the shape with a saw, work to shape with a wood rasp, and finish sand the shape by hand. Is it more work? sure enough, but the quality of job will be just as good.
They have these “drum sander” attachments you can get at Home Depot. Use them with your cordless drill on the higher speed. That’s what I used on mine and it worked like a charm!
I love your vids. I watch every one. My kids love em too. I wish I could tell what your pickups sound like. Every guitar and every pickup selection sounds almost identical on my end. If you say they suck or say they sound great I just have to take your😊 word for it because it always sounds the same. May be your amp, pedals, sound card. I’m not sure but other content providers are able to have differentiating pickup tones so it’s not the RUclips compression only. Anyway, luv yer stuff brah!!!

When wet sanding it helps to use a very mild soap solution, a little Dawn works great

no way you can get one of those cheap guitar kits sounding as good as a $1000+ Fender.. you'd need to put a $20 set of pickups in it to do that 😏

I build my own guitars and not only it is very therapeutic, it is also very satisfying to build something with your own hands. We were just not designed to sit behind desks all day pushing 1's and 0's all day. And yes, it is sad to see a 21 fret neck being included, but I reckon its basically standard with Fender so they probably figured why bother.
As for upgrade options, I reckon they could never offer all the options, so you would still end up with limited choices. In which case I would prefer to source everything myself. As for soldering, I have no clue as to why it puts the fear of God into so many guitarists. It is not that hard and it is need to know skills for a musician playing an amplified instrument. Murphy will ensure that something will fail that you can fix with a multimeter and a soldering iron. And youtube became big (and its basically the only thing it is still good for) by having tutorials on doing EVERYTHING! I learned how to build a guitar neck with LED's as dot markers from youtube.
@@davidcollin1436 I've bought a few of their pickups too. They seem fine. I'm with Glenn Fricker on pickups, they rarely make the huge difference that guitarists think they do. So as long as they give sound and are not microphobic most pickups will do. I do know that Sean HATES GF though. He thinks the stuff they sell is cheap trash.
Man, a kit is tempting but I got so many guitars now. That said my current favorites to play are parts casters I built.

Everybody needs a 10mm socket, because if you are a mechanic, you always lose the 10mm for some weird reason. Mechanics usually have extra 10mm sockets.
Socket sets should have three 10 mm sockets and two 13 mm.
I have an idea for you Sean. In the automotive world kit cars are offered so people can own extremely rare or extremely expensive cars. You could build your own guitar kits and bring back some old classics or unaffordable guitars. The original Fender Bullet was only offered in 81 and 82. When these guitars are done right they look and play better than a Telecaster. I say that because I own one so don't get the OCD fired up. I can see it now---- The Scarred Bullet--- up there with the Shelby Cobras. Just a thought.

I did a headless kit from Leo Jaymz. I gave a hundred bucks for it. It came out pretty nice. But the first time I went to tune it up, one of the tuners fell off in my hand. They would not replace cuz it was past warranty. Even though I had to finish it and put it together. I can tune it and it stays pretty good, but I really wanted it to be right.

Just started one of these kits for my granddaughter except I decided to go with the Poplar body because it seemed it may be lighter weight and easier to do some shaping I wanted to do. I did some contours for the belly and armrest that came out pretty cool. Been documenting the progress on my channel but got a little interrupted by a hurricane.
I have my same guitar I got in the 8th grade and I'm 50 now. My poor guitar needs a lot of work. I'm tempted to get a kit and build one, or get a Harley Benton or other affordable guitar. I'm not sure which way to go. I've never built one and don't have any special tools but I do have normal hand tools. Whatever I get will be for playing at home by myself or maybe jamming with a friend, but no gigs or anything profesional. So I'm curious what you recommend, buy a built guitar and maybe upgrade parts later, or build one and eventually change the pickups and tuners? I'd like to have a green guitar with the wood grain visible, so I'd probably stain it if I do it myself.

swapping magnets doesn't change resistance but it does affect inductance or Henries.

Sean/Shawn, my table saw doesn't cut curves as nice as your band saw in 16:54 or there bouts.
And I DON'T have an oscillating drum-belt sander.
But I love your idear for the paint job, with the blue chrome over the blue. That gives me ideas for doing a sunburst with metallic paint.
Otherwise, I'm right with ya in terms of putting that kit together the way I want. I have the tools to check & fix frets & stuff. And a drill press.
But I'm not sure I'd be happy to just swap the magnets in the pups. That doesn't solve all problems, but it's worth a try - might have a interesting sound!
BTW, swapping the magnets won't change the resistance of the coils. Why would you think that?
It might change the inductance though. You always want less.
I love your finished guitar. Especially if YOU love it. All I care bout is if it sounds good, and plays good.
If it looks cool, like a sunburst with metallic paint, that's even better.

Jimmy Page played his telecaster top loaded and he preferred it. It does have a unique sound but no issues with quality saddles.
Scar, I can't believe you sprayed that beautiful body with high heat engine rattle can paint from autozone, lol !! That once was a beautiful body that should of been stained, then a coat of sanding sealer, sanded and finallt spray about 3 to 5 coats of clear w/ sanding in-between each until the final coat....

If I'm being honest, I was a bit shocked because that blue rattle can paint actually turned out really nice. You did a great job on that!! I work with wood and high-end finishes, so when I see a nice piece of wood with graining etc I always imagine stain with a nice lacquer finish. Love what you're doing, your channels 💯🤙🏼

This is a good show. Ive built 3 guitars from parts ,I play them more than my older expensive ones ,They are as good as any off the rack 900 to 1200.00 .I like this scar guy, He shows people what they can do if they try .And hes rite ,Its just wood.The same wood ,Ive never used a kit ,Ill have to try one.
There are actually a few companies that make plug and play kits. Bex Guitars and Solo come to mind immediately, plus Guitar Fetish offers a complete plug and play system with prewired harnesses, pickups, and the output jack. I do think it's odd that they included a plug and play setup with a paddle headstock. A soldering iron is cheap and much easier to learn to use properly than a router. 🤣
Perhaps you can also try Leo Jaymz's DIY product. Our product is the best at the same price point.
After watching your video I went to Amazon and bought one of these, it looks and sounds spectacular, unfortunately I'm going to have to take it to a store to adjust the intonation and action but it's worth every penny.

From what I've seen from factory video's is that the hole in the neck joint is used to hang the body when they are putting a paint jjob on it

I am a guitar noob, but it does sounds a lot better to me when the strings goes through the body.
I always put a hum bucker in the middle on my tele kits. Gives me the best of both worlds. Blended together it sounds great!
That kit wasn't bad at all, I thought it was cool they included the black and white pickguards to give you some choice in the flavor. Six saddle bridge and string through body, I agree with 100,000%. Love the pro tip on correcting the fitment issues you might find like the control pocket being too small. I saw you remove the nut, did you "adjust" it or replace it with a bone nut? I think the finish you got was pretty damn good too. I know you must know how to make that finish like glass/mirror finish if you wanted to> I also know that doing that would take forever and it isn't necessary or that cool. Your finish has character and the character will become better with wear, tear and age because we know your scarred guitar ain't no closet queen! Love you man, I'll say hey at 10 tonight.
I bought the Bex gears Tele kit they make nice kits also
Black wet-and dry sandpaper works better, doesn't load-up so much,lasts longer too!

Jimmy Page preferred top loading and that's good enough for me. My telecaster is top loaded and I don't have any issues you just need quality saddles.
@@frankhughes5702 Page probably prefers them, due to time and convenience. Pop a string and quickly get another one back in. I dont have a problem with top loaders, but if you have a choice of choosing a top loader or through body, without much of a price difference, through body is a better choice any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
@@1980bwc It does make for a jangley sound and I kinda like it. Now, I could be wrong on this theory but I think top loaded is also easier on strings and you won't break as many in my experience I've been top loading for three years and haven't broken a string yet and I play my strings forever before changing them
I have encountered the same bridge rattle problem with top-loader six-saddle tele bridges but I didn't consider fixing it by stringing through the body- I just put a piece of foam under the springs! What causes the rattle? Is it that the top-loaded strings don't exert enough downforce on the saddles?
Thanks for sharing the guitar build, it was interesting to watch it come together as I haven’t built one yet. I was curious why you put sealant on the guitar neck after staining, but did not seal the body paint. This is not a criticism. This is just a newbie asking why because I want to build one of these at some point.

Why no clear coat for the body?
I know he sprayed it but with rattle cans if you want you can wet sand up until whatever sheen you want and then cut / polish and achieve a pretty glossy finish without clear coating and some of the rattle can clears don’t seem to cure right it’ll chip and peal and bubble up off the base coat, of course it’s possible that I used the wrong clear or in the wrong conditions but you can get a really sweet Matt finish with just a couple coats of spray paint and then dry sand it and paint again until you build it up level then you can work your way up to whatever sheen you desire with sand paper and finish with buffing and polish you’ll have to do that with a clear coat anyway so why not skip the clear and build it up with color and polish it ? That’s my take on it unless you’re using a self leveling pour on epoxy I think you can achieve a better finish with elbow grease and no clear coating.

Bro, thank you for what you do on RUclips. You've sparked up some motivation in me to where I definitely want to try a DIY guitar.
Only thing is, I don't have guitar tech tools.
I'm somewhat picky with the body style of my guitars.
The Strat body is ok but the body that really does it for me is the Les Paul. I've looked on Amazon and those LP style guitars don't do it for me.
But, there are a couple a different style flying V's witch are the one's I'll get.
I don't do any E-bay. My sister in-law shops E-bay and from what I've seen from there it's used stuff. I don't want used stuff.
Who else makes DIY guitars I can choose from?

Think I mentioned before BEXGEARS also has some really nice NOW are Beginner plug n play kits, No soldering for a FIRSTIMER slapping one together ya know Leo Jaymes, BEXGEAR, SCAR MY GUITAR, offer up some awesome kits within 50-60 bux of each other, Mine is an ode to Swampthing the 80`s era movie Do your personal on it.
I looked at bexgears And found it extremely strange that the site says they can't deliver outside of America when they have a shop in Canada Ontario How does that make sense
So, if you don't have a belt sander, rough cut the shape with a saw, work to shape with a wood rasp, and finish sand the shape by hand. Is it more work? sure enough, but the quality of job will be just as good.
They have these “drum sander” attachments you can get at Home Depot. Use them with your cordless drill on the higher speed. That’s what I used on mine and it worked like a charm!
Maple neck. Mahogany body. That ain't bad! I'd do a clearish or butterscotch paint job on that. Then make into a Mikawber.

I love your vids. I watch every one. My kids love em too. I wish I could tell what your pickups sound like. Every guitar and every pickup selection sounds almost identical on my end. If you say they suck or say they sound great I just have to take your😊 word for it because it always sounds the same. May be your amp, pedals, sound card. I’m not sure but other content providers are able to have differentiating pickup tones so it’s not the RUclips compression only. Anyway, luv yer stuff brah!!!
