Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

12:48 Before you mentioned The Buddha himself, you acknowledged that your family could still contact you, and you're there for them to help with advice. This was something I had often thought about, it's not something that is discussed and up to this point, I thought Monks/Nuns had nothing to do with family.
Thankyou for these understandable talks! 🕊

Namo Buddha how to practice mindfulness when you are around people that make you feel stressed

Remember Dukkha is present in attachment so investigate what it is you expect others to do to accommodate you. If you do not expect others to behave as you want, you will not suffer. It's the belief that there's a person that is suffering and that's what wants attention 🙏

I also have this difficulty, I usually try to notice how my mind state changed after the interaction, and maybe do your best in the future to notice your reactions as they happen as you get better at maintaining mindfulness.
If it’s stress or anxiety, that’s a bodily feeling, so you should be paying attention to your breath because that’s an easy object to remain mindful of and you will notice changes in your breathing and heartbeat as you begin your interaction.
Also you may get stuck in your mental space, so being mindful of thoughts is also helpful I find.
The longer you can remain mindful in the day, the more likely you will remain that way in difficult situations.
Another thing I noticed is, I have a particular victim identity. I know that’s not who I really am, I feel most affinity with observing, so it’s also a case of wrong view or personality view, so noticing you aren’t the mind and body related to that victim mindstate might be useful.
Hopefully Bhante can offer some deeper insights.

I'm going through a similar situation. Most of the time, I'm surrounded by people who constantly stress me out. I've only been practicing mindfulness meditation for the past couple of months, but this is how I cope:
When you're around people who make you feel stressed, mindfulness can help you stay grounded. Focus on your breath, taking slow, deep breaths to calm your nervous system. Pay attention to your body, notice where you might be holding tension, and consciously relax those areas. Observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment acknowledge them, then let them pass. Stay present by fully engaging with the current moment, whether it's noticing details in your environment or practicing mindful listening during conversations.
If you feel overwhelmed, use a calming mantra or create a mental image of a peaceful place to retreat to. It's okay to set boundaries and step away to protect your mental space. Practice compassion by understanding that everyone has their struggles, and approach the situation with kindness toward others and yourself. Lastly, it's okay to limit your exposure to people who consistently cause you stress. By using these mindfulness techniques, you can manage stress better and maintain your calm, even in challenging social situations.

Hi Bhante, I know you want to keep things simple but as you are already teaching online perhaps a chromebook and an aircard might make it easier to read the questions. You need a special permit to send lithium batteries through the mail so mailing a laptop would not work but perhaps there is a shop in the city that can mail or deliver it. As this teaching grows you may need to upgrade. It may make things easier if it is easier to read the comments, Anyway give it some thought and see if it would help.
