That's because the "writers" are constantly using the Bad Reboot style of plot contrivance: Celebrimbor is said the best smith in the realm, until the plot needs him NOT to be.
Just like in previous episodes when Galadriel "trained" the swordsmen: they're mentioned as being the best in the world, until the plot needs them not to be so Galadriel can "train" them.
There's a phrase to describe this, it's called BS.

In Fellowship of the Ring, Sean Bean has about 25 minutes of screen time. In that time, Boromir is initially established as a dutiful servant of Gondor, a battle weary warrior fed up with the lords of the lands kept safe by his people, a doubter of Aragorn, and someone with honorable desires upon The Ring. He's dismissive, weathered, prickly, and even a bit defeatist when the scale of the task is laid before the group.
He's then shown teaching Merri and Pippin to fight, through encouragement and light-hearted instruction. He's horrified when he accidentally hurts Pippin, because his intention is to teach not humiliate or discourage them. So he's absolutely joyous when the hobbits gang up, shrug it off, and tackle him in good humour. This tells us a lot about Boromir as a person without needing to lean on dialogue-heavy explanations. Heck, it isn't even the main focus of the scene, but it's there, happening nicely in the background, laying the groundwork for his and the hobbits' characters. It shows us, gently, that even though he's doubtful about their mission, he takes the initiative and recognises where his party needs to level them up, and does it without making them feel small. He builds bonds that he knows will make the group stronger. Bear this moment in mind when you consider Galadriel's scene in RoP, where she, as the superior swords person, is tasked with instructing the Numenorean recruits and what her actions tell us about her character.
Anyway, Boromir falls deeper under the influence of the Ring, but the film also shows him standing his ground and being brave against the Moria hordes and at every turn when the group need him.
When the Fellowship is fleeing the Balrog and the staircase is collapsing, he instinctively grabs Merri and Pippin and, without a word, he leaps them both to safety, again establishing his big brother relationship with them. It's such a small detail but it's so consistent as it quietly builds his bond with those hobbits in particular and it's especially interesting to see him do it after Legolas, and even Gandalf, have jumped alone. All shown to you through small details and interactions that involve very little dialogue. All action. All intent. All with purpose and meaning.
After Gandalf falls, Boromir pleads with Aragorn for more time just to let the hobbits grieve. He's compassionate, emotional, and caring. He is miles away from the dismissive, prickly presence he was at the Council of Elrond. He's truly a part of this Fellowship now, and he has a bond with the hobbits that goes beyond duty. It shows Boromir, while a good leader, also maybe thinks with his heart when he should think with his head, whereas Aragorn is more pragmatic and, in a way, ruthless. Both display different sorts of strength, but the situation calls for one over the other. And while Boromir protests, he doesn't argue further once Aragorn has made his reasoning clear. THAT also tells us a lot about both men.
Boromir is revealed to be an incredibly layered human being, one who is brave, loyal, caring, passionate and patriotic, but the burden of his father's failing rule and the pressure of protecting his people is crushing him. Haunting him. That is on full display at the Council, during his first temptation on the mountainside, and when he breaks down after Galadriel looks right into his soul and shakes him to his core. And it's that very thing, that incredibly noble desire to see darkness and ruin expelled from Gondor that is his undoing. That desire is the ring's way in.
He finally falls to temptation and this one moment of weakness almost destroys him, but rather than wallow in his failings, he rallies. He does all he can do to repent, and rescues Merri and Pippin in a desperate attempt to regain who he was.
    And he is struck down.
His first words to Aragorn while he lies dying are to alert him that the Uruks have Merri and Pippin. His second statement is his confession that he tried to take the ring. He is broken, dying, and guilt-ridden, but still trying to protect the hobbits and act with honor.
Then before he dies, in his last breath, he accepts Aragorn as his king and makes sure Aragorn knows it. Because Boromir has only ever wanted one thing - the strength to defend his people. And now, he sees that strength might exist in Aragorn, and he knows saying the words will help make Aragorn a stronger leader going forward. He now has hope even in his darkest moment, when he began the story defeatist, bitter, and hopeless. Boromir does all he can until the end, despite his flaws and failures. He's no longer the dismissive and doubtful captain of Gondor, but a man who calls Aragorn his brother, his captain, and the king he trusts to bring glory back to his people.
    It's a breath-taking moment. Resonant. Earnest. Earned.
They accomplish all that, that entire emotional journey, that rise, fall, and rise again for his character, in 25 minutes of screen time.
Now look at RoP. Galadriel is exactly the same callous, single-minded, revenge-driven asshole at the end of the series as she was in ep1. Actually, no. She's worse. Because now, she has actually discovered who the enemy is and smoked out his intentions... and chooses to tell no one.
All to protect her own reputation. All so she can maintain an air of authority and superiority over her peers, because if they knew the truth, her name would be mud, and she'd be nowhere near the decisions taken to forge the rings, how many there'd be, and who'd get to bear them. She shouldn't be like this. I don't think they meant for her to be like this. Her character writing feels shallow, rushed, and poorly thought out and now, there's a big disconnect between how the audiences feels about her and what the writers intended.
She's not like Boromir. Not written like him. Not developed like him. Not treated with the same care, thought, and humanity his character was treated with. She's a statue, standing still in spiteful, vengeful self-righteous self-service. Just like she was at the beginning of the series.

Boromir has a completely different portrayal in the books , and it’s much easier to grow a character in 25 minutes of screen time than in 3 hours. You people have no idea about how a character should expand over the course of a movie/series but you still offer your opinions like you ve made 20 different sagas

    • @eoingaskin

@@kossas2 yeah, except when you give that character 3 hours of screen time, what's supposed to happen is change, change to their character as they adventure and explore the world, they meet new people, new ideas, philosophies, they grow. Galadriel has not grown at all, despite meeting new people, going to new lands, hearing new ideas, she has remained stagnant in her character the entire season, and her character is an insufferable, angry know it all who thinks she is right about everything and deserves everything. That is not a compelling character arc any main character should ever have, because it will make the audience hate them.

@@kossas2 Comparing character portrayal and development in a written medium vs a visual medium would be a bit unfair. So I compared an impactful and layered character with limited screen time from the films with the main character from the show. A character who hasn't changed or developed any nuance or emotional layers in over 3 hours of screen time. I did this to illustrate how, in the same visual medium and within the same world and genre, the film makes maximum usage of the minutes it gives to Boromir and none of that time is wasted or filled with fluff. Every second serves him (and the other players) and develops their characters.
And that contrast shows, criminally, how little RoP has done with the time that it's been given to develop its characters.
And btw, I'm a writer with three published novels. I know how characters, characterisations, and arcs are supposed to work. RoP ain't it.

And they just melted it all together, and somehow made 3 rings that are clearly made of different metals... They wasted like 99.98% of the total metal. And they call that forging. Did he use it as some kind of focus object, did he overload it with his power or did it have some power of its own that was exhausted (we never see it being used any differently than by the leader of the trio), and the staff merely existed JUST to have a fight with Gandalf that looked more or less like the Gandalf vs Saruman fight, even complete with the "wall slam"?
Also, since the team on the show was also HUGELY into diversity of all kinds, it was probably just them wanting to make sure there was a "female version" of the Ring-wraiths, in order to subvert anything from LOTR, regardless of whether it was lore breaking or not. It's not like this show is ashamed to destroy lore in any way it possibly can with the justification "hey, chill people, it's an adaptation and we're allowed to change things because it was changed before". I must say that the more I read the interviews with the show creators, the more I am becoming convinced that they are a couple of narcissistic morons. There is no humility, the kind of "we did our best, we hope you like it, we hope you will find true at least to the spirit of the original". Instead they are talking about their own show, their own work like it is bound to be an instant masterpiece. The whole "you need to watch it for the second time to get it", like this is some work of art, is such a proof of them being full of themselves. Look, if a movie or a show is good, it simply doesn't need such vulgar self-promotion and self-aggrandizement. When Jackson's movies were being made, the whole cast and crew were simply expressing their unworthiness and respect to the original and were hoping that they won't botch it. The respect they earned was, well, earned. RoP creators are all talk and no real value.

That is why the show will NEVER improve under its current showrunners. Getting them out and someone in who ACTUALLY gets Tolkien should be the first order of business. Leaving them in there is just making sure Season 2 will be a repeat of Season 1. Also, the show will GREATLY benefit with the inclusion of a veteran writer, preferably someone with experience in fantasy - because not only will the writing become better, but the dialogue as well. :/

Granted, it's a classic setup in stalling the villain, but ONE of the "witches" could have held off the Harfoots, while the other two tagged attacks on Gandalf, the one attacking with the other one defending them both. :/

So here’s what I’ll say for the show: if I’m being very, VERY generous, here’s what I think the showrunners were trying to do. (Be warned, this is a loooong shower thoughts/stressed insomnia rant, so I'll probably have to proof read this and edit later when I'm more sound of mind, and it's no longer 3 am)
They wanted to build Galadriel up from being a flawed, angry person into a strong female lead. In the beginning when she was willing to let her subordinates freeze to death, I don’t think that was supposed to be seen in a positive light. They wanted to show that she lacked empathy and was too fixated on vengeance. This was so that they can set up character development (maybe in future seasons…?) so that she will mature into the wise Galadriel that we see in LoTR.
To support that theory, i think character development was supposed to be shown with her displaying empathy with that kid with the sword in the aftermath of mount doom (can’t remember his name, can’t be bothered). Her talk with uh… Father of the orcs was supposed to be a moment when she’s supposed to realize she’s not nearly as heroic as she thought. And at the end of the season, that's when she realizes she’s to blame for Sauron accomplishing his goal. She thought she was so strong and powerful, able to control and manipulate everyone into doing what she wanted in Numenor, but Halbrand/Sauron was in control the whole time and basically got her do all the work for him (I’m going to call him Saurbrand from here on out).
I think this is supposed to set up redemption/character development in future seasons, kind of like Zuko from AtLA. Honestly, they kinda feel similar, with her whole ‘I gotta find Sauron’ thing being very reminiscent of ‘I must capture the Avatar’. The problem I have with this is a couple things. First of all, Zuko is a 16(?) year old kid. He’s a dumb teenager trying to figure out his purpose in life. Galadriel is supposed to be 1000+ years old by now. How much ‘growing up’ does she need? Another problem is that Zuko’s “I must capture the Avatar” is followed by “to regain my honor”. His goal is motivated by a desire to prove himself to his family (keeping it spoiler free in case some people haven't seen AtLA. If you haven't seen AtLA, watch it because it's MUCH better than RoP. Just AtLA though, not Korra). Galadriel’s motivation is supposedly revenge, but everything she does also feels like she’s trying to prove herself. But it’s not even like there’s a true goal with proving herself, she’s just showing everyone around her that she’s right, that she has power and she’s in control. But why does she need to do that? The showrunners want her to seem that way because ‘FEMALE LEAD IS STRONG WAHMAN' but why does Galadriel need validation? The way she acts is just like every other female protagonist we’ve had in the past like… fiveish years.
That brings me to what I think is the biggest problem with Galadriel’s character- she’s not an elf. Well, she is an elf, but she carries herself like a human. And maybe that’s why it was so obnoxious to hear her talking about a “tEMpest in ME”
I’ll draw another comparison- look at the difference between Thranduil and Galadriel. By the way, I didn’t particularly enjoy The Hobbit (the films, not the book, the book was excellent. Ten year old me even gave it a 5/5!). Despite all the problems I had with the adaptation, I really appreciated the portrayal of Thranduil’s character. He had the grace and elegance of an ancient elf. There’s something so much more compelling about “Do not speak to me of dragon fire” than “yOU haVe nOT SeEN wAT I’Ve sEEn”. One speaks to actual experience, the other is reminiscent of ‘I’m not like the other girls’. Then look at how they handle being rejected- ‘a hundred years is a mere blink in the life of an elf. I can wait” vs “TEMPEST.” Thranduil’s threat is sophisticated. It's arrogant and cold. It's the embodiment of how an ancient immortal being would behave. There’s nothing about how Galadriel handles herself that makes her seem even slightly elf-like. She's about as threatening as a Karen sitting in the parkinglot of your local grocery, blasting kidsbop in her minivan.
Another problem I have is with the things we 'have not seen.’ They are supposed to be so terrible, but somehow gets immediately overshadowed by the eruption of mount doom. My thoughts are similar to Mr. Guy's thoughts- why is this moment so important to Galadriel? Was the volcano erupting worse than what we haven’t seen? Honestly, there wasn’t much to see with mount doom, it was just cheeto dust. Does this mean that anyone who has witnessed any other event that resulted in more death and destruction can override her authority? Then can all these other characters who witnessed this event with her say ‘we HAVE seen what you’ve seen’ in an argument? (Especially that one queen lady, ‘cause that’s the last thing she ever got to see!) Or is this supposed to be an ’oh crap I messed up really bad’ moment? But even that doesn't make sense, because she doesn't know the outcome of this event. Has she never suffered any type of defeat before? Clearly she has, because of the terrible things we 'have not seen', so why does this moment force character development?
It’s so baffling that she suddenly changes her attitude after this event. Did the volcano take out the tempest? Does it work like that? I’m kind of interpreting the scene during the forging of the rings, when she’s willing to give up the dagger, to mean that she’s willing to give up her quest for revenge, but that doesn’t make any sense. Saurbrand is RIGHT THERE. Why didn’t you fight him? Why are you hiding his identity from your allies? Is this a pride thing? Did the fact that he was able to hide his identity while they were chumming it up makes her feel embarrassed? Or is she… empathetic to his sob-backstory? When did that happen? Why did that happen? Is it because you got to know him and he’s more ‘human’ than you thought?
But that just brings me to another problem in the story- everyone is so human. The elves are blonde human, except when they're not. The orcs are evil human, and homeless. The dwarves are short human, in a mine. Heck, the closest thing we have to non-human characters are the Harfoots, and those are just evil oompa loompas. It’s like the showrunners don’t know how to write anything other than weak human characters. Saurbrand is a maiar, why is he so weak in his backstory? Yeah, I know he served Morgoth, but he still had SOME power. Why couldn't they have made Saurbrand like Saruman in his backstory? Saruman was a threatening villain all on his own, even though he was serving Sauron. Why are dwarves talking about breaking tradition and change- since when were dwarves all about progress? Why does the plot literally strip away immortality from elves, thus making them even more human, and why are they called 'Fair folk' if they're not all fair? why are we trying to HUMANIZE orcs? I'm so confused and stressed out by this show...

If making an alloy, you're melting two metals and mixing them like a Martini. If you're forge welding, you heat them to a temperature that makes them about as soft as clay, and hammer them together. (there's a bit more to it, but the details aren't that important right now) Dissimilar metals don't always like to forge weld.
So, fair, if Celebrimbor was trying to forge weld and Mithril hates being told what to do without being given a treat first, okay, maybe workshop explosion.
But forge welding would be the not right thing to do if you wanted to dilute a metal, because it's wasteful of material as the surface away from the weld oxidizes, burns, and gets broken off in flakes by the hammer blows.

But the ONLY reason he was possibly sincere was due to the massive power that the Valar have (i.e destroying his complete existence). The show is such a revelation. Such an amazing reinvention. The part where they canonically establish that Galadriel's scowling turnip face can tank a direct blast from the fires of Mount Doom was such an epic creative choice that I almost shit myself. Now, when Amazon eventually remake the LOTR trilogy, they have a brilliant new opportunity to subvert expectations by having Galadriel attend the Council of Elrond...
"The Ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, Son of Gloin, by any craft which we here possess... it was made in the fires of Mount Doom and only there can it be unmade."
Galadriel shoves him aside, scowls the scowliest scowl that's ever been scowled and screams, "Fuck that shit! IT'S TEMPESTIN' TIME!"
She then slams her face like a coked-up emu into the table with all the force of an exploding volcano.
The Ring explodes into a million pieces along with Galadriel's skull. She falls down dead and the blood soaked Council cheers with relief.

They probably know nothing of Tolkien's masterpiece, as evident from their interview in the Vanity Fair Article.
