I think seasons like 2010 and 2011 are why they changed the ROTY rules. We all know Brad Keselowski would've won if he was eligible. He was the only guy that ran the full schedule in his first full season in 2010.
2012 was even worse as Stephen Leicht attempted 21, failed to qualify a Circle Sport car 6 times, and got it on virtue of being a defacto road course ringer despite his background not being on road courses in a race that frankly was more bizarre for Leicht than normal as he managed to finish on the lead lap and pass Bobby Labonte for 26th.
Key part to this is the big money teams didn't have the seats available so all we got for years as rookies is underfunded teams. Two things improved the rookie classes again, one was quality rides opening up as the late 90s/early 00 drivers started retiring (Gordon, Stewart, Kenseth, Earnhardt...etc). The other was Nascar limiting the Cup guys racing in the lower series
All I remember from Kevin Conway is two things. Jeff Gordon's soundbite on how the 34 needs a driver when he lapping him and Robby Gordon assaulting him at Vegas in 2011 over unpaid sponsorship money from Extenze.
I think Michael Mcdowell has come a long way since this video is the one that Daytona 500 to Brickyard and made the playoffs two out of the last 3 years
Nobody remembers him running. Honestly, same with Brett Moffitt in 2015...just looked it up myself, as he was ROTY that year & i truly don't remember him running too many races.
TBH, Trevor Bayne never had a rookie season in Cup. Yes, he had rookie stripes on his car from 2010-2014, but in the end, he never had a season where it was considered “Rookie status.” The most races he ran in the #21 in one season was 17 races in 2011.
We have better rookies because the rookies we have are driving Hendrick and Gibbs powered cars. Top tier stuff. Certainly better than Circle Sport or old Front Row Motorsports
@@seannolan9857 They are driving top tier stuff because the veterans started retiring and teams needed to replace them. Either way, some of these rookies would've moved up
Sadly, a lot of the IndyCar folks ran over to nascar because it looked like IndyCar was dying. It really hurt IndyCar for a few years when Hornish and Dinger came over to become also rans. Speed also probably would have made a great candidate for a Indycar ride.
I still find 2008 funny. Despite having 3 former Indy 500 champions (2 of which also won IRL championships, the other an F1 championship), it was the virtual nobody from the NASCAR development ranks that was ROTY.
I mean... she was never going to be HOF material, but she really wasn't a bad driver. She was overhyped and pushed through to the Cup series much too quickly. I think if she had run a year in the trucks and another year in the Nationwide series, she may have been a respectable driver. And yeah, many times she did a good job of kicking her own ass, but she also had the worst luck in the field. She had MANY really good runs go up in flames because she got caught up in someone else's BS.
Agreed. Five different winners ties them with 1994 for the highest number since 1960. Sure, their combined win total is lower than Clint Bowyer's, but they still all won.
Danica was clearly the worst. She had top flight equipment with SHR for her entire run, and came away with a grand total of 7 top tens. Almirola hasn’t exactly racked up wins in SHR either, but he has qualified for the chase in all 3 years. Second place has to be Dario Franchitti. It takes special effort to make David Stremme look good by comparison.
@@gregrowe1168 yep. Not that Kenseth was a slouch his last few years at Roush, but I definitely feel Matt had better chances at more titles for the first few years at Gibbs.
This due to one reason, Buschwhacking, These young ones didn’t get a chance to race because Cup drivers were filling in top rides in the Xfinity series at the time.
I think 2012 takes the cake here. The guy 41st in points won rookie of the year because the only other contender was start and parking for all but one race (and STILL finished higher in points).
@@andrewwinslow9315 I somehow don't even remember that happening and I watched the 2012 season. I can only only guess the reason is summed up in 2 words that were very popular in the same time period: Start & Park
You have to also nominate 1992 when Hensley won it considering that he started only 24 races. But 2010, 2012, and 2015 were pitiful as well. Conway, purely awful. Leicht gets his because Wise start and parks all but one race. Moffitt wins simply because his BK competition sucked. Period. Any objections?
@Kuromori That was in Nationwide, not Cup. In Cup, his biggest accomplishment was finishing 22nd at Martinsville. That was his only top 30. Oh yeah, and he was the first rookie that year to lead a lap.
Danica Patrick was forgettable as a NASCAR rookie (other than that pole at Daytona). Ricky Stenhouse Jr. didn't set the world on fire as a rookie either. A match made in heaven. :) At least until Danica left NASCAR and decided she'd rather sleep with a quarterback.
