One must remember (if you were alive for that era), that arcade operators would line up the fighting games side-by-side. And on my way to play Time Crisis, or House of the Dead, or Metal Slug, passing by that Soul Calibur cabinet during one of the character's weapon exhibitions was guaranteed to fascinate me enough to have me stand still for almost half a minute. A lot of time, considering in those days I only ever played Tekken at the cabinets. And yet none of the Tekken opening movies, from 2 through to 6, would have me as spellbound as those Soul Calibur weapon exhibitions. It was impressive, as a technical demonstration, as a marketing tactic, and as an exhibition of martial arts (mo-cap) prowess.
Top class video my man - the "attract mode" is definitely becoming a neglected feature of games, whereas back in those good old days the developers would need to use real creativity and flair to entice the player to drop in a few coins at the arcade. These weapon demos are a great little addition to the usual gameplay demo.
Soulcalibur had a sense of adventure about it. Like the characters were living in a world of their own, and the weapon demos added to that. And yeah, 1 is better than 2.
The problem with this mode is if you put it in a modern game the weapon demos alone would take up like 30gb of disc space because of how much animation data they would need to make them look this good with modern graphics.
i've worked with CoD last year. There's some truth into it. But the head of the department don't want us to optimize the assets when we could've reduce it to 1/6 of its size. It's possible for other games as well but it's been the norm now because bloating the game makes less competition in the disk space.
I used to play this game 24/7 for like two months until I purchased Shenmue, also Time Crisis, and it went worse lol, I used to leave the exhibition mode while eating or taking a bath I will purchase an arcade and put it along with VF V, which is the best fighting game ever period, also Project Soul is part of Namco, and they just are a group of developers that went away from Sega and stopped working on Virtua Fighter to do Tekken. You could customize the scenes of the intro as well, the plot was the best one so far, also the team with Xianghua, Kilik and Maxi was solid, everyone was from the same country but they were all from different places traveling the world after the emperor found out about the previous Soul Edge, that game was sick, the beautiful art, the characters, the music the story mode was amazing full of interesting missions, best game along with SC II and Soul Edge it is a shame what they have done to the games, unfortunately the plot went to be only about Soul Edge, the characters went nowhere and VI is not that good because it is too focused on offense and lacks of interesting timing, even the hits feel weaker at a times, Cassandra however is a beast.
Luv them so much, would watch them over and over when i first got the Dreamcast, animation and graphics madness back then, perfect mocap back then was insane.
Man I loved the demos, I would just fire up the game and just watch them show off their stuff. When I was a kid, I went into the backyard, grabbed a stick(s) and did my own weapons demo too. Great video and happy holidays.
I would spend entire afternoons watching this ones, reading the lore, playing on training mode and so on. The fact that I remember this even after so many years is a testament of how charming it was. The music of the first 2 games is amazing too, it gives such a good atmosphere to this presentations and even the fights. I know the word "cosy" gets thrown around a lot this days, but those afternoons with the music and presentations were so cosy and relaxing to me, I really miss that. Im gonna honor you and my memories by playing and relsxing to the game this week. Thanks for the video
Thanks, I'm glad this one hit for you! I've never actually thought about calling a fighting game "cosy" before but you're absolutely right! I think that's what I'm trying to say in this video is that the game makes me feel very cosy and comfortable 😊
Great video! I remember being so mesmerized at the characters moving around in Soul Calibur when I was at the arcade. Glad I found your channel appreciating the Dreamcast and all of its games too.
This really is a cool feature. A new Virtua Fighter really would be the perfect place to bring something like this back, especially if they keep 5's level of customization, would be a huge selling point on top of that
Thank you so much! I'm really glad they hit the spot for you 😊 Yes, that's one I'm excited for actually - it will be going live on Radio Sega this Saturday, and then on Dreamcast Junkyard a little after that 😁
I did always find these cool! I remember tekken having these as well! Well tekken 3 at least from what I can recall because I played the hell out of it!
This doesn't get talked about enough. I really hope project soul brings this back to SC VII. They can expand upon it by allowing created characters do these demos as well, along with a mode that allows you to watch from different angles or just have full camera control, a pause button to take pictures of sick poses, the possibilities are endless. I know they can do this especially with how insane the character customization was in SC VI.
I have to agree, the original Soul Calibur on Dreamcast is the best. I've not played V, but I've played all the others and there's just something missing from them that the original nailed. It really needs a port to Steam and modern consoles.
Maxi exhibition with double nunchucks. As a kid for years I thought you could unlock double nunchuck maxi. Also soul calibur started getting less fun in my opinion when they started adding anime super moves in 4. They kept adding stuff that didn’t improve the game.
Yea that double nunchuck Maxi demo is sick! I think you're right - from 4 onwards it seemed to go more over the top and shonen anime style where the first few were a bit more grounded and (relatively) realistic. I think that's why I don't vibe with the newer ones
Soulcalibur 1, 2, and especially 3 were amazing with most of their modes. But the thing that bugs me is not just the loss of Exhibition mode which I would've especially loved in Soulcalibur 6 since the game has such beautiful visuals and awesome character models, its also the loss of survival mode. It pains me that there are ignorant people who think this mode isn't important. It is as I have used it to improve my skills and strategy for staying alive in matches. Its necessary especially if you want to accurately tune yourself to survive fighting multiple actual players in a session or tournament. Speaking of, SC3 had tournament mode. Give it back!
Yes! It 100% is that - thank you so much! I just typed it in and watched a dude playing a bit of it, and he was doing the part where you walk around the temple/island thing to see all the demos. I seriously thought I would never see that thing again. Thank you for helping me :)
@DreamcastEnjoyer You're welcome. It's always fun reconnecting people with their lost games, and learning about obscure software in the process. I would have loved that program as a kid- It reminds me of looking through the martial arts section in Microsoft Explorapedia.
I have! Great memories of playing that on PS1. The weapon master mode was really good! Siegfried was my favourite and I was sad when I didn't see him in Soulcalibur (other than Nightmare form) but then I was so happy when I unlocked him 😄
Your wrong about soul calibur 1 being the best in the series when 2 blows it out of the water completely but i respect your decision because soul calibur 1 has more iconic soundtrack

Thank you - I'm glad you liked it!
I'd love to see this stuff come back in modern games, for sure! 😁
Great display of athleticism and warrior prowess. Never knew a lot about this franchise but it is way nicer looking than i thought
Oh dude, huge recommend on Soulcalibur 1 and 2 - both are unparalleled fighting games
Soulcalibur had a sense of adventure about it. Like the characters were living in a world of their own, and the weapon demos added to that.
And yeah, 1 is better than 2.
Preach 🙌
Such a unique thing to talk about. This was a cool video
Thank you very much 😊
The problem with this mode is if you put it in a modern game the weapon demos alone would take up like 30gb of disc space because of how much animation data they would need to make them look this good with modern graphics.
That's probably true 😅
i've worked with CoD last year. There's some truth into it. But the head of the department don't want us to optimize the assets when we could've reduce it to 1/6 of its size. These were so great! I wish more fighting games had stuff like this nowadays
That's my only gripe with modern fighters - there's plenty of incredible games but they don't often have cool extra stuff like this
These and the Kata from Tekken 3 were totally awesome.
I really need to revisit Tekken 3 as I totally forgot it had that!
@@DreamcastEnjoyerDead or Alive Extreme 2 also had it, I remember Hitomi doing actual real life kata that I practice myself.

YOOO! The Maxi 2 nunchuck demo was seared into my brain. Thanks for the upload
I love that one! Glad it brought back a good memory for you 😊
Luv them so much, would watch them over and over when i first got the Dreamcast, animation and graphics madness back then, perfect mocap back then was insane.

That's a really fun memory- something I'd have done too if I thought on haha
Thank you and happy holidays! 😁
I loved them as well! Best part, you can do 90% of what you see on screen. Worst part, the reskins. C'mon! I wanna see Yoshimitsu being a freak!
I would spend entire afternoons watching this ones, reading the lore, playing on training mode and so on. The fact that I remember this even after so many years is a testament of how charming it was.
The music of the first 2 games is amazing too, it gives such a good atmosphere to this presentations and even the fights.

Great video! I remember being so mesmerized at the characters moving around in Soul Calibur when I was at the arcade. Glad I found your channel appreciating the Dreamcast and all of its games too.
Thank you very much! The arcade version is great, I still play that sometimes, but amazingly the DC version is even better
This really is a cool feature. A new Virtua Fighter really would be the perfect place to bring something like this back, especially if they keep 5's level of customization, would be a huge selling point on top of that
I'm glad it's not just me that thinks that! I'll love to see the Virtua lads showing off their moves
Omg i love these vids. Truly some high tier content these games had. Something that recent games lacked...
Absolutely- I'd love to see these come back!
I love your videos. Real soul food. From the topics to the delivery. Looking forward to that Blue Stinger Christmas Special!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad they hit the spot for you 😊

I did always find these cool! I remember tekken having these as well! Well tekken 3 at least from what I can recall because I played the hell out of it!
Damn I need to revisit Tekken 3! I always liked the Tekken Force mode but didn't realise it had demo reels like this
@DreamcastEnjoyer if I remember correctly, the played, when you stay on the menu screen too long!
In Tekken, these sequences were known as Embu. It is present in Tekken 3, Tekken Tag Tournament (console version only), and Tekken 4 (only Jin).
@dethlady0 ahhhhh interesting! They do call it Enbu in Soulcalibur 1 too
My dad who thinks video games are a waste of time fucking loved these when i showed them to him.
That's actually pretty cool - they must have some universal appeal
@DreamcastEnjoyer yeah, he's a big martial arts enthusiast, and seeing real arts in these demos really impressed him.
Devs and creators aren't allowed the time to pump out content like this.
That's very true and it's such a shame! I'm grateful that game dev was different back in the day and we got cool stuff like this
I miss fighters doing Kata
It needs a comeback, for sure!

That would be the dream! Honestly if they announce SC7 with this feature I would check it out just for that
Soul calibur is the goat
No arguments here 😁
Happy Holiday dude
Thank you! You too 😁
I remember seeing Zasalamel had a weapon demo.
That guy came in part 3 so soul 3 has weapon demo too.
I only ever played 3 at my friend's house, I never owned it, but cool to know it was still rocking with these 😊
I have to agree, the original Soul Calibur on Dreamcast is the best. I've not played V, but I've played all the others and there's just something missing from them that the original nailed. It really needs a port to Steam and modern consoles.
I'm so glad it's not just me! Yea the newer ones don't quite nail that special feeling - a port or collection would be great
Maxi exhibition with double nunchucks. As a kid for years I thought you could unlock double nunchuck maxi.

I with you there- I love going through survival mode (that's how I mastered a few characters)
The feature to set up tournament brackets was great too!
Yea, I love those too.
Also: Soul Blade/Edge > Soulcalibur 3 > Soulcalibur 2 > the rest
I do love Soul Blade too 😊
based
😎
I had to try hunting down that Windows 95 game. Is it The Martial Arts Explorer by Softkey?
Yes! It 100% is that - thank you so much!
I just typed it in and watched a dude playing a bit of it, and he was doing the part where you walk around the temple/island thing to see all the demos.

ever played soul blade?
I have! Great memories of playing that on PS1. The weapon master mode was really good!

Your wrong about soul calibur 1 being the best in the series when 2 blows it out of the water completely but i respect your decision because soul calibur 1 has more iconic soundtrack
I love both of them but Soulcalibur just takes the top spot for me. Totally agree on the soundtrack too - full of bangers
@DreamcastEnjoyer they really need to do a compilation game with all the soul caliburs even 5
0:09 pause. Thank me later
[Ryo Hazuki voice] hmmm I see
Soul Calibur 3 was peak and it's been downhill ever since
I really need to play that one properly! Only played a few matches with friends
Brooooooo!!!! I totally forgot about that mode!!! I used to watch characters for hours! 🥹🥹🥹
It's so cool! Glad I could remind you of it 😊
Great video! These weapon demos were always so cool!
Thanks! I'm so glad it's not just me that loves them
