Your eyes don’t see in fps. Also, you totally can see the difference between 30/60/120+ fps. You are however correct that latency issues will cause stutters. And limiting fps to reduce that problem does work. Depending on the system you run and in game settings etc.
i hope all FPS chasers realize this..A 60 Hz monitor basically refreshes the panel 60 times every second, which is basically 60 frames per second. So even if hardware capable of higher frame rates is plugged into a 60Hz monitor, the monitor output will be capped at 60FPS
I think there's a lack of understanding here. Decreasing frame rate fundamentally increases latency simply because of reduced input calculations and fewer visual updates being sent to the monitor. What you're fighting is frame pacing, in other words the timing between each frame. For example, at 60Hz, assuming all frames are evenly paced, you're looking at 16.6ms of latency (assuming the physics engine, monitor, and input devices are updating at or above the FPS value). Increasing to 120fps halves the latency value. That stutter with the P-51 taking off could be due to a number of factors such as hitching (where a critical operation prevents execution of other operations because those operations require the vales obtained from the critical operation) induced by the server connection or asset loading. Honestly at the frame rates stated, you're likely to see an FPS drop at that point where the stutter was present, even at 120fps. In fact I know you will because it was jarring for me even on a 60Hz monitor. In the event you're seeing stutters but fps is not dropping, the frame pacing is inconsistent. In other words you're getting some frames close to each other and others farther from each other, but the total number of frames is still the same in that second of measurement. Now, at 1:28, it's stated "When you cap your fps, you're basically reducing the amount of latency that occurs when you have FPS drops and rises." I feel like this is unknowingly alluding to the problem when inconsistent clock speeds of the GPU/CPU. For the most consistent experience, maximum clock speeds are preferred at all times, altho this does increase power consumption which is up to anyone who reads this if that matters if that matters to them. In the event your fps drops, yes latency will increase due to having less frames. However, in the event the GPU/CPU is at a lower clock speed and the workload increases, it's far more likely to fall behind the work load, and this will lead to those kind of of stuttering as shown, and by extension an even larger drop in frame rate. TL;DR I do not think capping your FPS is going to do anything for that stutter that was shown, unless you're playing at like 15fps. It's likely hardware issues. IE Server not keeping up, CPU/GPU clock speeds not ramping up clocks fast enough to deal with that panning camera, or perhaps the hardware struggling to load in and process the assets for the game. PS There is one use case where capping FPS would decrease latency and that's inconsistent frame rate below the maximum refresh rate of your monitor if you're using Gsync or Freesync. This still doesn't fix that stuttering shown in the video however. Hope this helps.
Thanks for getting the word out on this. I tell folks in my sphere that with regard to frame rates, you shouldn't apply the same logic to a flight sim as you would to a quick-twitch shooter. It's a different animal entirely. A consistent frame rate is way more important than maximum FPS.

MavicAir1, thanks for your input! I'm at 90 and it's running better than when I maxed it out at 144. I still get negative feedback from guys who haven't experienced what it really does for us. That lag time when the machine pushes to the max and shutters when frames dip is what we're avoiding. I could run 100, 120, probably with no real issues for the most part, but 90 gives me the same experience as those settings but as you said, with way more cooling and less stress on the GPU/CPU.
I have mine capped at 60fps for silky smooth performance at max settings with everything turned on. 👌 DCS looks absolutely stunning and feels solid and fluid compared to being uncapped and having the frame rate varying. Why 60 fps? I my eyes can’t tell the difference between 120 or 60 fps. At 120 fps you I can definitely tell if I get a sudden drop to 115 fps on a flyby for or though a dense city example. My monitor refresh rate is at 60hz, and producing frames above 60fps would be something my monitor can’t display and would be a waste of GPU resources. A solid and sustainable max frame rate has always been the holy grail for flight simulation. Why people waste their time trying to achieve max fps that varies constantly is beyond me. I play DCS in VR with my Pimex Crystal (using 4090), and up until yesterday I used 90 Hertz refresh rate with eye tracking and DFR and locked my frame rate in the Pimax XR software to half of that. @@AIRWARFAREGROUPYes sir. Visual improvements in terms of elimination of stuttering. Yes sir...I haven't tried 60 yet as my particular hardware capabilities should support steady 75 so testing that right now and it looks like a keeper! Note, it will be dependent on individual hardware. After posting this, so many of my friends on Discord are saying, "Duh, I've been doing this for years!" I admit, I limited my FPS to my Hz rate to avoid screen tearing...but I don't even know if that is a thing anymore.
Quick question, I’ve limited my frames through vsync and also Nvidia control panel to 60. I still get stutters on a couple of maps and when I loon at the fps counter it’s the frame time causing it. The fps in the top part are well above 60 but the frame time means I then drop below. Am I misreading the fps counter and it’s some sort of theoretical fps if my cpu wasn’t limiting frames? Seems to happen over dense scenery.
Yes, PDF scanner should give you a two or three digit number hopefully not a one digit 😉 and it’s pretty straightforward in DCS. No, there is no substitute for for hardware if that’s the case.
Can you do a test. I did it and just the Lua and it limited that way. Doing it in both doesn’t hurt it but it may be redundant. Thanks for the question. It’s a good point.
im gonna try 60 with vsync on. 120 hz monitor. .... i was getting 90 with the 2.9 update ( + an improvement over 2.8) but ya still slide show at times, and sometimes drop to 0

I7 9800k, 3090, 32 gb DDR4. guess its time to upgrade, as its beyond me how to get decent fps that it seems EVERYONE is getting.
27 with virtual reality ain’t that bad as long as you can keep it at 27 or higher. By chance is your hardware a little old or maybe not design for DCS World. Lotta people don’t realize that DCS world is in a game because if it were, it would be a lot cheaper to get into, it wouldn’t take so long to set up each aircraft, and you wouldn’t have to have any expensive gadgets like joysticks and stuff.
Reflected simulation’s video is coming up private? How can I see it?
Great video by the way @airwarfaregroup .
He was editing it, I’ll send him a note.
Juice can you let us know your final setting for the fps once your done testing please
Does turning on Vsync do the same thing, provided the computer hardware can consistently deliver the max FPS of the monitor?
Maybe, I have noticed that I have VSYNC set sometimes and I can still adjust FPS.
Frame time is the same as FPS. They both have the exact same variable as product
What is your equipment models and are you getting any CPU Bound message up there in the meter?
So, do i have to make the change in BOTH spots.. nvidia control panel AND the .lua?
Ive only done the nvidia one so far.
Thx.
Can you do a test. I did it and just the Lua and it limited that way. Doing it in both doesn’t hurt it but it may be redundant. Thanks for the question. It’s a good point.
im gonna try 60 with vsync on. 120 hz monitor. .... i was getting 90 with the 2.9 update ( + an improvement over 2.8) but ya still slide show at times, and sometimes drop to 0
Might have same results with 75 as well.
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP thanks ill try!
If you can fly for a while with the FPS monitor on (click the little triangle to make it minimal) you could see how much it goes up and down...and if it seems to float between say 60 and 90 set it for 70 or 75 to see what happens. Then for giggles, set it to 60 and see if there are any hick-ups. There will be some when someone loads into the server, when you take screenshots, or something like if you have your preload radius set too low, all of a sudden a lot of detail has to POP into render.
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP i played a little bit today on Enigmas, it did drop below 75 on airfield but overall happy with the performance! no stutters!
I’m rocking with 90 locked for a few weeks now and loving it!
I changed it to test it to 45fps, but now i wan't to change it back to normal (i think 140), but dcs remains stuck at 45. Any help please?
Which method, the lua file or Nvidia control panel. If both changes both back. You can also restore default on control panel and running Repair DCS.exe utility. You’ll get it restored not to worry.
Get it working?
I have a Nvidia RTX3070 8Gb vram running on UHWD in 2k at 75hz and getting 114fps on the Marianas with no stutter.
A fix for me was Nvidia 3d settings, global settings and setting Driver Cache sise from 'driver deault' to 'unlimited'
👍 awesome
I tried to open the file with rstudio and it says access denied
Never heard of rstudio I used notepad ++
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP yeah i used it and it worked, thanks
Don't cap your frames - that's absolute rubbish. Capping your frames will not sync to your monitors refresh rate unless you ensure some form of Sync. Put vsync on - end of.
I'm good with the setting.
Your getting 8 fps and your going to like it
😜 I’ve been there in the old days. I called it SPF “Seconds Per Frame” 🤣
