  • Changing a tire is a simple process, but it's important to know how to do it correctly to avoid any potential accidents or further damage to your vehicle.
Step 1: Find a Safe Location
The first step in changing a tire is to find a safe location to do so. If you're on the side of the road, make sure you pull over to a safe spot and turn on your hazard lights. Look for a level surface to work on and make sure the car is parked with the handbrake on and in gear (or in Park if it's an automatic transmission).
    Step 2: Gather Necessary Tools
Before you start, you'll need a few tools. These include a spare tire, a jack, a lug wrench, and a wheel chock (or a brick or a large rock that can prevent the car from rolling). These tools are typically found in the trunk of your vehicle, near or beneath the spare tire.
Step 3: Loosen the Lug Nuts
Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the tire you need to change. Turn each lug nut counterclockwise until they are loose. Do not remove the lug nuts yet; just loosen them enough so that they can be turned by hand.
    Step 4: Place the Jack
Locate the jack points on your vehicle, which are usually indicated by small notches or dots on the frame of your car. Place the jack under the designated jack point, making sure it's securely positioned. If you're not sure about the location of the jack points, consult your car's owner manual.
    Step 5: Raise the Car
Using the jack, raise the car by turning the handle in a clockwise direction until the tire is about 6 inches off the ground. Double-check to make sure the car is stable and secure before continuing.
Step 6: Remove the Lug Nuts
Use your hands to unscrew the lug nuts and remove them completely from the wheel. Then, carefully remove the flat tire from the wheel hub and set it aside.
Step 7: Install the Spare Tire
Line up the spare tire with the wheel studs and push it onto the wheel hub. Once it's in place, screw on the lug nuts by hand, making sure they're tightened evenly.
    Step 8: Lower the Car
Lower the car by turning the jack handle counterclockwise. Remove the jack and then use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts as much as possible in a crisscross pattern. It's important to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure the wheel is correctly seated and aligned with the hub.
Step 9: Check the Tire Pressure
After changing the tire, check the tire pressure on the new spare tire to ensure it's at the recommended level. The recommended tire pressure can be found in your car's owner manual, or on a sticker located on the driver's side door jamb.
Step 10: Put Away Tools and Flat Tire
Finally, put away the tools and the flat tire, making sure the lug wrench and jack are securely stored in the trunk. Take the flat tire to a mechanic or tire shop to get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

Thank you for this video. While I've changed tires before and didn't stay for the lesson, I had my jack out of my car for so long that I couldn't remember how the darn thing was secured under the spare! Watching the part where you removed the jack was incredibly helpful for me. Thank you!

Help please! My tire is flat and I went to change it but I don’t see the tire iron. I was convinced until seeing this just now that I was missing it too. Where exactly was your’s? Also, for your replacement lug wrench can you explain why you didn’t for a little larger? Where are you storing it? Can it be store with the donut in the trunk in that compartment? Thank you in advance!

@@DarthPhilos It's common for them to be missing on older/used vehicles, as they may not have been replaced when used previously. It'll be right there under the mat in the trunk, along with your spare. Your best bet is to contact roadside assistance, if it's missing. I have my replacement in the trunk, but not under the mat. It's plenty large enough for me to torque the lugs off. Best of luck!

@@ReviewsAndHowTos Thank you for the quick response! I’ll double check under the mat in a sec. Any chance you can recommend a good replacement wrench that can be stored under the mat?

@@ReviewsAndHowTos So Update: I do have it. For anyone else wondering it is on the jack and looks like it’s part of the jack. And it won’t come off the jack until you adjust the jack to loosen it by hand. That releases the tension holding it in place so you can remove it. I think that will be the hardest part for anyone needing to change a tire on a Ford Fusion.

I had a flat yesterday on my ford fusion and sure enough, that tire iron is useless. Couldn’t loosen any of the lug nuts. Had to call roadside assistance, but first thing I did afterwards was get a new tire iron.

Great video. What is the exact size of that spare you pulled out? I have to buy one for my Fusion 2015 which does not have one. Sidewall numbers? My car comes with a 5x108 bolt pattern. Thanks in advance !

You need a T125/80R16. It fits perfectly in the space that Ford put your fix-a-flat under the trunk. Anything larger and you’ll have to just store it in the trunk itself.
