When I went through OSUT for the Army Infantry in 2012. I literally did the same thing. I wrote home maybe once a week or once every other week. When we got our calls. I did not call home until the last call to let our family know about graduation and family day. I've known guys who've wrote home everyday and talked about home everyday some even quit because they were so home sick.
Do not quit during BCT/AIT/OSUT! The fastest way to go home or get out of training is to graduate often times people who quit are there longer than the people who graduate. It's only a couple of months to a half of year. Graduating and becoming a Soldier is very rewarding

Staying busy helps as well. When I was deployed to Iraq in 2003, I didn't write a letter for a month because I was so busy. The flip side is that people got worried and started calling my mom to see if I was okay. So, maybe write a letter once a week is best. You have to remember that you may not be the only one worrying about how you're doing. Sometimes family can get so desperate for your letters, that they will call your Chain Of Command which is the last thing you want. It puts undue attention on you from your leadership, whether that be in Basic/AIT, or deployed far from home. Trust me.

When I was deployed to Kosovo, a buddy of mine would call his wife every chance he got. Sometimes twice in a 24 hour period. They started having problems. He asked me what I thought he should do, and I said cut down by at least half and once a week at the least. It worked. He wasn't worried as much about his wife, and she wasn't so angry with him for his possible control freak issues.

In all honesty, part of the reason I'm joining the army is because I don't have anything I will miss at home. I have a pretty mundane civilian life. I've been bored to tears going to college and working 9-5. I dont want to do this crap anymore. I havent gotten my associate's yet, but I'm just happy to have completed enough credits to come in as a PFC. Im excited for the new phase of my life and truly believe I'm going to enjoy my time in the army!

    • @macburger5026
      @macburger5026 4 года назад

Oh yeah, unless you get a good MOS (nothing in the 92 series or combat MOS or 25 series. ) and get sent to a good unit (which you have no control over) you're going to get really bored beyond tears in the military and especially in the army....
Lots of soldiers, especially lower enlisted, end up not doing anything related to their MOS and instead of relegated to lifting tents and cleaning out connexes (storage sheds) in the motor pool all day every day.
Being in the field for weeks at a time isn't all that exiting either. Looking at the same assholes everyday (including weekends) when you can't bathe?
When youre in basic/AIT, it's like whatever, but when you get to your unit and you find out you have to do the same kind of PT you did in TRADOC you're going to get sick of that real quick too. In the army, our PT is called "PRT" and we have to do the *exact same exercises in the exact same order every single day* including many exercises that have little or no effect on your physical fitness at all, like the "prone row"
Then with a lot of 11 bravo infantry guys, they get stuck also having to mow lawns and pull up weeds.
I'd say consider the air force instead of the army, so that way you would be able to do your own PT at least some of the time, you would actually be doing your job instead of the motor pool, you wouldn't have to worry about the field, you'd be able to leave the barracks much sooner (E4 instead of E6 like army) etc. but that just might fly over your head just like most other people who haven't been in the military insisting the only branch of the military is the army and it's all about the army.
So don't count on life becoming "exiting", especially in the army, unless, again, you have a decent MOS (like maybe CID 31 delta or PSYOP 37 foxtrot or maybe watercraft operator 88 kilo) and get sent to a decent unit.

@@acaciasmith9411 if he's active duty especially, I hope your relationship can last. The military is already a very stressful life as it is. The army in particular is arguably the most stressful next to only the marines.
Keep in mind that we have the longest deployments of all the branches, lasting from 9 months to a year (the marines by contrast may have to do just 7 months).
Unlike other branches like the air force, we in the army also have to go to the field a lot and stay for weeks at a time. People in infantry may have to stay for a month and a half at a time and it's going to get very stressful dealing with all those people, including people you don't get along with, for every single day in those types of conditions (not being able to bathe and clean yourself for all of that time).
Infantry soldiers and marines can be some of the biggest assholes around, so your boyfriend might end up with an even more unnecessarily aggressive than he started out with.
Then there will be times where in addition to basically sleeping out in the motor pool like so many other solders of various MOSs do, infantry guys are frequently put to work as basically migrant workers pulling up weeds and mowing lawns, things that will put even more stress on him. He might even have PTSD making him even harder to deal with and you folks might end up not working out. Good luck.

mac mac burger Thank you for all the info 😊 I actually knew a little bit like the deployment b/c my brother-in-law just got back from a year deployment in Kuwait last week and he’s in the Army with only six months left Active.
But yeah my boyfriend is going in as Active Duty Infantry and wants to do some more specialized training if he passes the pre qualification courses (I think that’s what you call them).
Him and I have been together for almost 4 years now with only a few bumps in the road so far but I know that we won’t know how our relationship is going to change until he goes through everything. I just know open communication and understanding is going to be key here.
Luckily for me I’m trying to get onto Nursing school so I definitely have something to keep myself occupied with lol And if everything on my side goes on track he will only have 2 years left after my degree since he signed on for 6.
