I had a conversation with my Father when the cantina went up, he collected SW from POTF2 till 2009 Legacy Collection. Had every figure except con exclusives and vehicles. He told me if a backer hasn't collected from POTF2 to TVC, they will spend more money populating that Cantina than on the Cantina itself because those figures are going to skyrocket. It's not worth it if you don't have everything.

Sure, but I think much like the sail barge the primary target for this is probably the niche group that does have all the figures and are just looking for a way to display them.
These things are targeted at the hardest of the hardcore collectors.

I’m surprised you don’t feel more strongly about the cantina. As you said, it’s not an “action environment” in terms of people killing each other (mostly), but it is one of the most famous scenes in Star Wars, and one of the most well-known scenes in films in general. Even folks who don’t know Star Wars too well are aware of it. It was that moment during the original film where we see the Star Wars galaxy is far richer than just humans, robots, and masked tuskens and Jawas. A bunch of random, crazy looking aliens standing around drinking and getting into fights is what the scene is loved for, and which translates well into a great display and conversation piece.
The modularity is ideal in terms of making it work for your display space. I’d also expect they’ll support it with more cantina characters and reissues next year around the time the cantina comes out.
There was no stage for the band. This was done in reshoots in LA. They were filmed in a regular alcove like many of the other aliens, and they do fit as demonstrated in today’s Pulse upload.
At the end of the day, they have made many cantina characters over the nearly 30 years of the modern line, and it’s nice to finally give them a home. And it’s nice to finally have access to the Tonnika Sisters after all this time.

Just because you explain something clearly you believe to be true doesn’t make you right. I mean, I would argue more action happens in the cantina than on Dagobah, which you noted would have made a better HasLab. 🤷‍♀️

It's a display piece. If you have the figures of all the (dozens of) cantina aliens (and realistically, most people who would be buying this probably do), it gives you a way to display them in context.
As for the band, in the movie, they were just shot in one of the alcoves, so the playset allows they to be displayed exactly how they were in the film. There is no "stage" in the actual set.
Realistically, I think the fact that they can produce the entire locale more or less to scale probably helps.

    1. I would agree that this doesn’t necessarily have a lot of action/play value as a “play set”. However, I don’t need it to. I’m not going to play with it, because I’m not ten anymore. I’m just going to be using it as a diorama. Which is probably what most adult collectors will be doing, and it is clearly aimed at adult collectors. I would also argue there is enough action value just as a diorama. This is after all where Obi Wan cuts off Ponda Baba’s arm, and where Han kills Greedo because he shot first. There are plenty of scenes to put on display
    2. I have been collecting the aliens that populate this cantina for years. I’m thrilled to have a display to put them in.
    3. I’m glad they didn’t include the cantina band! They just released a boxed set of the whole Cantina Band a year ago. I bought it then. I don’t want figure slots wasted on something already available; something I have anyway.
    4. The band stand. This one I don’t blame people for not understanding, but they did include the bandstand. Sort of. The original film set of the cantina did not have the band. All those scenes were shot without them. You can tell when you watch the movie. They aren’t in a single wide shot, nowhere in the background. This is because the band was conceived of later and shot later by themselves in one of the alcoves from the cantina film set . This is also why in shots of the band, you can’t see anybody but the band. I think Hasbro wanted to be faithful to the original film set so you can set it up with all the alcoves full of furniture and patrons, or if you really want the band you can just remove the furniture from one of the alcoves and put the band in it and voila!

Disagree. The Cantina was the only dioramma display that I had back in the day when I used to collect. It was great to stick all kinds of figures in there from other lines. Aside from Jabba's Palace, the next placer with the biggest number of figures is the Cantina. That's why people like it, you can get a lot of characters together interacting and not just inside but also outside since they made the entrance areas. So you can put your Dewback there, Luke's Speeder, the Ronto, Sandtroopers, Jawas, droids etc and then all the aliens inside.
Same with Jabba's Palace, he has a ton of goons and denizens and you can do various scenes like Boushh with Chewbacca or Luke confronting Jabba.
Cloud City has one major sequence - The Carbon Freezing Chamber - which hasbro already did. That has a large amound of figures that can go in one space (Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, 3PO, Leia, Lando, Lobot, Bespin guards, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, Ugnaughts, carbonite block).
What are you going to do with a few corridor backdrops? There aren't Cloud City residents figures and they have only ever made two guards.

Hey! So the reason the cantina band wasn't included is because there was actually never a place for the band on the original set where the cantina scene was filmed. It was an insert shot picked up in the united states in a separate studio. The only time the cantina band has appeared on a stage was in the Star Wars Holiday Special. Adding some sort of band stand would have required changing the layout of the Cantina seen in the film, and film accuracy is always the goal, espcially with Haslabs.

There's a massive 4-foot Death Star playset with functioning pieces, LED's and 12 areas from the film (the tractor beam even lights up and there's an electric trash compactor, apparently), coming from Hasbro at some point. I've seen the plans and it looks terrific. Unfortunately, like this, it'll be another crowdfunding piece, though and I just refuse to take part in a crowdfunding effort from a company that made $5 BILLION last year. Or at least I'm telling myself that. There's principle and then there's....a 4 foot Death Star playset. lol It'll be a moral struggle. lol

I can recall seeing collectors asking for a cantina playset ever since I first started collecting SW myself as a young whippersnapper back around the time _Revenge of the Sith_ hit theatres. I don't understand it myself, but it seems like the cantina has always been and always will be a fixture in the minds of many OT fans (maybe because it was a big "wham" moment with the plethora of alien creatures suddenly on display in a film that had up until that point been fairly retrained in its use of non-human characters), and I don't think that there's anything wrong with that, any more than people wanting Jabba's sail barge.

Anything you could imagine would fit in there. It’s like an “alien carnival”, LOL. I’m not a purest. I will put Star Trek, fantasy, Joy Toy, etc., in the display. It’s not an essential part of the story, the kid in me just loves the idea! I do agree about LED lighting and including the band. I wish they would’ve done that. The Cantina is a great display piece (diorama) that you can populate many figures into for an accurate theatrical effect! It is much the same as Jabba’s Palace with all the alien denizens. It is not necessary “that not much happened” in the way of action, because this was the takeaway scene from A New Hope. Everyone in the late seventies was blown away by the cantina scene!!! Great point about the band though. Hopefully Hasbro will take your lead on offering alien 3-packs to populate this thing!

...Michael look, I love your channel, and I understand your desire to take down Hasbro, but your assessment that The Cantina is not a place of significance has me bewildered a bit.. The Cantina IS Star Wars!! I was five years old when I saw Star Wars in the theater. It had spectacular action, a very frightening big baddie, and some talking robots. We learned of the mysterious Force, met our Farmboy hero, and a crazy old wizard...BUT.. When our heroes arrived in the bar, and you see that first alien headshot, followed by a pan around the room to all these magnificently designed creatures, that’s when this galaxy BECAME a galaxy far, far way. I was only a child, but I was in absolute awe of what I was seeing. Everyone was. We met, for the first time, this wretched hive of scum & villainy..It was the first time we saw a lightsaber light up and do it’s thing!!! We met a cocky smuggler with a debt to pay, and watched him take out a bounty hunter BEFORE the bounty hunter took him out!! And those
who wish to back this project, like myself, have or will have most of these characters from the modern line to populate it with..( The secondary market on some of these characters will blow through the roof I’m sure.) The Cantina, with all it’s strange creatures & renegade characters is what Star Wars was built on, and this set is a dream come true!!

I'll offer my two cents on why I plan on backing the Cantina: in the first movie, it's more than just a seedy dive bar where we meet Han and Chewie, and where Han shoots first(!) to show that he don't take no guff from a lizard... for the audience, it's the first real (and only) glimpse of the much wider universe that Star Wars exists in, in the first movie.
Here are all of these insanely different alien creatures from all corners of the galaxy just hanging out casually without any fuss or muss. It exemplifies the lived-in aspect of how old this universe has been around that thousands of aliens are so familiar with one another that they can dine and drink side-by-side. There's no shock at seeing a sentient bug, or a werewolf, or penis-head musicians...
As a kid, the cantina scene shows (show, don't tell, is the adage that great storytellers should adhere to) that it's a giant melting pot, where humans are just another bunch of aliens admist many -- and arguably, humans are the worst of the galaxy, given that they run the Empire! So there's a lot more to the significance of the Cantina that I feel like you're leaving out, as I think that's the real reason it's so iconic and people remember it so well.

I think what made the setting memorable and iconic was the lighting. Its an adult atmosphere, a rough setting. You get the thing and its all drab shadowy plastic you're going to have light it up and risk melting something.

Hi Michael, I can definitely understand some of the points you mentioned... above all, for me it's exactly the same as you think: I want to stand in front of my diorama with my cup 😊 and enjoy the view of the cantina, as soon as all the figures one day have been produced. (Of course, I'll be happy before that.)
Because I'm absolutely sure of one thing: Hasbro has also pushed the Cantina to bring more and more figures into the market... because if in the next few months (years) … approx if 15,000 people buy all the figures again, that would be - let's say - 20 new figures for $20 each... a nice $6,000,000. And money is money.
I think the Cantina is an absolute cult, more so than for example, Echo Base... but of course, it needs the figures... which Hasbro will 100% deliver.
As for the band, I just watched the sequence again... they're not standing on a stage, at least you can't see it... so I almost suspect, that they're actually standing in one of those round, hollowed-out sitting areas, although this would basically make no sense… but ultimately it's not that important.
By the way, the bar in the movie actually seems to be exactly the same size as Hasbro made it... You can see it quite clearly at one point in the movie - so Hasbro did a great job with the deluxe version.
I thought about joining or not and decided to buy a cantina almost at the last minute. I guess, that a lot of people decided to buy towards the end, because it was questionable for a long time, whether the Haslab would be successful. And how it was!!!In the end, just one extra figure didn‘t made it! So, this is a very good starter set. I think, that many of those, who thought about buying or not ended up buying it. And Michael... did you still join in at the end or did you actually not order a cantina?
I love your videos for years… You have always a clear opinion and don't follow anyone's advice! Keep it up!

I WAS BORN IN 1977 AND STAR WARS means a large part of my life, because of Return of the Jedi and Robotech I became an amateur writer.
However, I'm not stupid, I'm not going to fall into Hasbro's damn game of emotional blackmail with their haslabs. I am going to use my knowledge of model trains and with only $200 I can make the same structure, with the same 3D printed accessories and even electrical installation with lights and a horn so that the musicians can play "like a novel" by Los Acosta

Honestly a mos eisely spacetown playset would have made more sense for display or recreation of showdowns like in the mandalorian or something but that's just me 😁👌

My theory on the cantina fixation is simply that it's a product that supports a lot of complimentary products. There's so many figures that have been made and remade that it's almost something people will invest in because of the sunk cost fallacy of how much they've paid for the random cantina aliens. I personally don't have the space or desire to get one, but I can see this going well for them. Certainly better than the Rancor or Reva lightsaber. I can at least see the logic and market who would want it.

Man, the Vintage Collection is in a real tight spot right now. Most of the releases are reissues and remakes of OT characters we already have oodles of figures of, any rare new media character is from 2 years ago at least, and there’s no new reveals for vintage Acolyte figures yet. Now they’re gonna focus even more on the OT, despite the fact that next year is the 20th anniversary of Ep III and fans will be anticipating new releases and updates of characters from that movie

I might consider it if it was a bit less costly, just so I could put the Emperor behind the bar serving Joker, Voldemort, and Cobra Comander with Thanos going into the restroom carrying a plunger.

You're right on the money. And I believe that's EXACTLY what it's meant to be. This *isn't* available at retail. And while I still think there's a lot of fun value here for kids, it's FOR the hardcore collectors who have been in this for years. But if you think Hasbro won't still capitalize on it and do reissues and resculpts to help fill it out, you're crazy. There's a whole campaign supporting this haslab into 2025. Yes, it is overpriced. But knowing their focus group and trying to get as much money as they can while we're still relevant and actively buying, it makes some sense. This is being sold as the ultimate centerpiece capstone of decades of collecting and a premium product. So using the old Sideshow logic, premium product equals premium price. It's that much because it CAN be. No one is happy about the cost, but by now it's almost expected and if you want it you'll pay it.

My guess is they had overstock of beige plastic pellets for injection moulding, and had to use that up. Would make sense why it’s such a large beige playset, with very little colour variation on other parts of it. Always look to the company budget to resolve your mysteries of the toys.

The docking bay where the Millenium Falcon lands and Ben and Vader fight would have far more "play" value. If you were going that way.
