  • In my longest Fix it Friday to date, I'm checking out a SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis) that I got untested from eBay. Usually untested means it doesn't work - but is that the case here?
    Well... this is a Fix it Friday video, so there is definitely something afoot!
    What is it? Well watch and see!
    My Capacitor and Power Regulator Kit came from Digital Delights on eBay - www.ebay.co.uk/str/digitaldel...
    The Bottles for my IPA came from Amazon here - UK - amzn.to/3KTOfZY / USA - amzn.to/41MxiqD

    I'm starting to think somebody on the board of Sega had stock in a capacitor manufacturing company

    Well done. Sealed LED should be ok if washed and dried, check connections / polarity voltage. If C24 is a tantalum cap then worth replacing as these are notorious for shorting when power is applied. A practice (which may help or hinder) is to gently run some plier jaws along the lengths of pins on through-hole components. This removes oxidisation and makes soldering / reliable connections easier.

    I guess the seller used the wrong power brick, and it would not work. That would explain why it works.

      @@kiphakesMate, how did you dive into disassembling the console without watching some other videos first or reading the maintenance manual? I'm glad you figured out how to detach the power light wires instead of ripping them off from the board like how you wanted to do originally 😂

    Hello, learned about you through Vince.
    The board revision is a newer VA6.5; the final Euro-PAL board was 6.8. The only real differences are the VA6.8 markings and the CXA1145 under the heat sink being made surface-mount.

      @@kiphakes Really really late response, but I forgot to add that you can find out the year your console was manufactured by the serial number. The second number from the left is the year: 8,9,0,1,2,3 for the MD1; 2,3,4,5,6 for MD2.1988 was the launch year for the JP MD1, so 8 corresponds to that year, for example. Both your Mega Drives were made in '93. Sites like Sega Retro and Sega 16 are really good resources.

    I have a question. I'm actually about to work on a couple of Super Nintendos as well as a Sega Genesis and I noticed that they both take that same voltage regulator. The Genesis has thermal paste but the Super Nintendo doesn't. Do you think it would be a good idea to add thermal paste to the Super Nintendo voltage regulator in the same way as the Genesis? I honestly don't see how it could hurt but I just wanted to run it by someone like you who has more experience with this kind of thing

    • @kiphakes
      @kiphakes  Месяц назад +1
