"How Gareth Southgate revolutionised the mentality of England players!"
*Southgate lightly tapping conga drum for 45 seconds straight*
I just feel like compared to all the England managers in the past 20/30 years Gareth just seems so relatable and humble! That’s reflected on the pitch also.
England Squad had been a bunch of individuals in the past. I do not remember winning them first game of any major tournament in the past few decades. With him in charge, the squad looks unified and humble.
- World Cup Semis
- Euro finals
With a core of young players, which we are not used to seeing with Three Lions. I am baffled on how some people criticize him. Great bloke and equally great job done by him so far.
because he's won nothing yet. Hopefully it comes home but the euros was our best chance ever.
@@safcjoe7062 I fail to see how England managers are being criticised on the basis of 'winning nothing'. It's England, not Man City.
@@HarvesterYT I'm just stating what others are saying. I like gareth but because we've made great progress since the iceland defeat, a lot of fans see anything less than a trophy as a failure as gareth has upped the standards.
People are quick to forget the state the squad was in when he took over, and how much he has done to get us to believe in them again. If it wasn’t for an unfortunate set piece goal, the nation would be hailing him as a genius.
He is has inherited the strongest generation England has ever produce and he has failed and England have not won anything due to his tactical errors. The problem is the media and some less informed fans have been so starved success, they wrongly credit him for England becoming a better team and not the fact the academies of club teams have become the best in the world and is producing technical and tactically great young English players who can play elite level football in larger numbers than ever before. When has an England manager ever had his 7th choice centre-back playing for AC Milan and 5th choice Striker be one of the leading scorers in Serie A. Or second division English players moving to big clubs like Dortmund and Bayern and staring for these clubs. Where Germany young players are so inferior to English young players that the Germany FA is begging English developed kids to change nationality and play for them like Musiala and Nmecha. This has never happened before and we are wasting another golden generation on another mediocre coach. Southgate lose to Croatia in a World Cup semi-final because he was slow to reach to tactical changes by the Croatia. Lost the semi-final against Holland in the Nations League because he rested all the Spurs and Liverpool players for that game saying they needed a break after the Champions League final, while the Netherlands Liverpool players all played. And against Italy in Euro 2021 went ultra defensive and not reacting again to tactical changes by the italian coach and lost a game England should have won easily with the right tactics. I read Portuguese and was on a Brazilian football site and even the Brazilian fans think England has the strongest team for sheer numbers of good quality players but they all said England's biggest weakness is Southgate. England can do. Could you imagine Klopp or Guardiola against an Italy team that struggles against speed in defence, would play a 5 man defence against them? England would have won that game if Southgate had not been so cautious that is why I would replace him Potter the only good English coach or get Guardiola who is scheduled to leave city in 2023.
He demonstrated his tactical ineptitude in the second half against Italy. Southgate was a mediocre player and is a mediocre manager.
@@Delboy0 Gareth is not a top coach for sure. But there's no way in hell that he inherited the strongest squad we've ever produced. i mean for goodness sake we lost to Iceland just before he was hired. he messed up quite seriously in that final but this squad is no where near the teams of the 00's and even the 90's. regarding your point about the centre backs, don't you remember when we had terry, ferdinand, carragher, campbell, ledley king and then jonathan woodgate at real madrid?
the academies are doing well, but the age groups that are excelling are the kids born between '99 - '03. I have faith that when they reach their prime in 2026, gareth will be gone. For now it's good that we at least have a coach willing to give young kids game time but when they are in their prime we will need a better coach. the players in their prime now (kane, sterling, maguire, stones, hendo etc.) are pretty mid tbh, not really a golden generation
regardless, the likes of klopp, guardiola and tuchel do not move into international management anymore. top coaches prefer the day-to-day of club football. people forget that mancini, deschamps etc were struggling to get top jobs before moving into international football. Gareth is not a great manager, but touting guardiola as a replacement is a bit naive tbh. Potter would be a good shout but I still think he'd want a good premier league job whilst his stock is high. i reckon gareth gets two more tournaments then we get rid
@@Bob-hp9ie more than you can claim

You can definitely see the influence of Glenn Hoddle in him. Hoddle was ahead of his time, he could of done great things with England.
But he didn’t so 🤷🏼♀️
@@CMJames 👏👏
He did alright in 98, would've been England manager for a long time if he'd kept his stupid opinion on reincarnation to himself.
Personally I think he's a bang average manager who has been gifted a golden generation of English talent. They deliver underwhelming performances when facing anybody who's actually any good. Gifted easy routes to the final in the last 2 tournaments and failed to deliver a single convincing performance during either, despite scraping through to finals and semi finals.
Wouldnt say a semi and final is underperforming. Id say portugal are under performing. Belgium are underperforming. I think we are playing above expectations
Perhaps they deliver underwhelming performances because when they face teams that are better than them, they struggle? Why is this concept hard for people to grasp I wonder? You keep bleeting on about these ‘Golden generations’ and seem bemused that none of them have ever won anything.
Are other nations just better perhaps? The evidence of England not winning anything for 55 yrs plus would lead me to that conclusion, doesn’t matter who manages the team. The PL has English people deluded about the talent the nation possesses. Foreign players reign when it comes to technicality and creativity
@@CMJames they produce underwhelming performances against teams they should easily beat, actually. Look at the current crop of players we have and tell me that's not a once in a generation opportunity to win something. Say all you want, going out in a semi final to an ageing Croatia side should be an embarrassment, not lauded as the massive achievement and success that it was.
Can't be more underwhelming than capello and erriksen. Go with the flow, you'll miss this England team once it's gone believe you me
@@CMJames england have played some abysmal football over the last 50 years, but we've also been very unlucky not to win anything when we have had a shot. look at the circumstances of the losses WC 90 and Euro 96 for example. plus when we've had world class squads on paper like the 2000s team they've utterly failed to perform to their potential. like it's mainly because of these failures that we go into every tournament with an almost delusional sense of hope while bracing for the worst.
Thank you, Gareth.
The first minute is a perfect demonstration of why you should always play with a click. It sounded like my year 6 music classes.
So stunning and brave!
I don't think many really appreciate yet what he has done for English football. I don't just mean with the England team but with the sport and FA as a whole. Still makes me very curious to know what is in his new contract and what will his role in the FA from January 2025 due to the significance of that very interesting end date he now has.
It's coming home in 2022 🏴
Don't get too carried away. It is like Gareth once said: England is like Peter Pan in reverse, when you believe in them, they die 😆
Southgate you’re the one 🏴
Southgate didnt revolutionise anything. He simply took Pep, Klopp and Jose's notes and ran with it
England are painful to watch in the final third.
Think Hoddle was more of an influence, mixed with these guys 👊
@@_7.8.6 and that’s Gareth’s fault? English players are substandard in comparison to the foreign players. The PL is full of creative, technical foreigners! Connect the dots!
@@CMJames it is his fault. He’s the manager
He has but not on the Manager side but the structure of English football. He has had some odd selections because he prefers players who have come through his system that he has made within the FA. Those who haven't come through 'The Pathway' (as the FA call it) have to fight 100 times harder to get a place.

Armchair mangers who never played in a refereed game and couldn't lead a castrated poodle are the best managers, exclusively in their own opinion.

Lucky? We lost one game throughout the entire 2020 euros and the final we lost on penalities. Not a bad performance is it chief.

That final against Italy prooved that Southgate is not the man to take England forward to the next world cup, playing 5 at the back, and 2 DMs, effectively a back 8! Didnt pick any ball carriers going forward as he left grealish, sancho and foden out. I hope he plays Bellingham ahead of Kalvin Phillips in the world cup, Phillips is an average baller who keeps being picked ahead of a guy who is already a starter for Borrusia Dortmund and has put in man of the match displays in the Champions league. Southgate is way too defensive and lets not forget that we had hkme advantage in the Euros apart from the Ukraine game.
Still reminisce over losing the final seemed like non of the English players cared some of them were smiling. The right mentality would of been pushing forward instead of pushing back when being 1-0 up the same story against croatia in the world cup

Really decent guy, knows how to deal with the media but not yet put the team in place to get England over the line. The last 2 tournaments have opened up for England yet when they have been tested, they have failed. That's the unfortunate reality. You need to beat Croatia to get to a WC Final and can't then you manage to beat Denmark to get to a EC Final. It's fine but this idea that it is somehow amazing is indicative of how easily pleased some people are and how there is no real standards. The penalties debacle against Italy was poor. Under pressure, when they are playing good teams England aren't really any better than they were before and no one can be that confident that in the next world cup when England come up against a good team, they will win! He needs to add first class people to the coaching set up and make changes from the base he has built so far to try and keep evolving & improving the squad and our prospects
England still have some deficiencies at the top level at CB and CM. You can be sure Maguire will play in the next game despite his poor form as an example. It's not all players on form & playing for their clubs each week
We beat Germany. We've gotten to two semi finals and a final. We've beaten some good teams along the way. France couldn't beat Switzerland. Germany got knocked out by South Korea at the world cup. We were one penalty miss from being European champions
Who is a better manager than him that’s available? Genuine question
For some people the grass is always greener, lol.
They also don't see the irony that the way fans (along with the media) treat the England Manager makes it less tempting to take on. They also forget:
1 - International football is not the same as club football and not many can or want to do it
2 - The England job isn't as tempting as they think
3 - The role is very political and it means working closely with the FA. It means that the FA have their own agenda. You only have to look at the politics in the previous appointment to see that (especially the suspicious nature of Sam Allardyce's appointment and very quick departure).
We play defensive football when we have great attacking players if he doesn’t win the World Cup he has to go
Too bad he extended his contract
@@ultrainstinct6595 Haha I was thinking that. Also, don't see him leaving until least 2026
His contract is until December 2024 already. Even if England get knocked out in the Group stages, he will still there. Wouldn't be surprised if he is there until 2030, I think 2026 minimum. Although it looks like his role will be a tad different from January 2025
We don't play defensive football. Against Germany we controlled the game, especially in the second half, against Denmark we dominated and it was only the game against Italy that we were put under any pressure. What this shows is that the strategy isn't to park the bus.

Yet he chose to be very conservative in his style of play and we all question his subs decisions.
Don't get me wrong, still getting to the final is an achievement. I'm not denying that. Saying that he has "revolutionised" I think is not correct. There's nothing special about the way the win, the style of play, or even the tactics. In fact, if you look at the Euros, England only played against 1 top tier team, and that was Germany, a team that we all know have not been at their best since the won the world cup.
