Anderson went 7-22 on field goal attempts. Maybe if the coach let him play with a shooting guard in the back court, the result would've been different. If you have another point as your running mate, one is going to be prone to be that shooter from the perimeter. Granted Anderson was player of the year but in my opinion they should of played David Cain at the point. Cain was a much better pure point guard who looked to get everybody involved in the offense. St. John's dropped the ball by only starting Cain during his senior year. With Cain running St. John's offense, The Redmen returned to the NCAA tournament without Malik Sealy & Robert Werdann, 2 McD's All Americans in 88. The team they had in 91 had so much potential. Always loved Cain's leadership skills & unselfishness & if the NBA was like it was today with the D league, Cain would've been on someone's roster. Even if they would've put Number 22 , Travis Ford who despite being 5-10 could shoot & distribute would've been better than Anderson running the point. I'm not saying bench Anderson but switch him to the other guard position to free him up so he could get to his spot & shoot. Cain would've been able to penetrate & find him easily. Cain an expert at finding open men. Ford too. I definitely have to give it up too the "DMV" team, The Capitol All Stars. Virginia, D.C & Maryland Always breed great players & continue to till this day. You'll always find at least 1-2 DMV players on the McDonald's or Parade All American team every year. 1989 was a great year for talent on the H.S level. I remember at least 12 players who were deserving of that prestigious McDonald's All American moniker who didn't receive it including David Cain & Travis Ford at PG. New York was so talented that year that they couldn't put every deserving player from the city on it. Derrick Phelps, Khalid Reeves, & Jamal Faulkner who all played at Catholic League power, Christ the King from NYC all made the McDonald's team along with Catholic league rival Archbishop Molloy's, Kenny Anderson. From NYC Public School league, Darryl Barnes from Franklin K. Lane was also elected to the McDonald's Team. 5 players in all from NYC's 5 boroughs. That left off at least 3 other deserving players who were Top 60 players in the Class of 1989. You can understand why these players weren't selected since 5 were already picked. SG Robert Phelps from NYC's Catholic league who ended up at Providence of The Big East, Catholic league 6-10 PF Shawnelle Scott from All Hallows' who went to St. John's and Public league Player of the year, Adlai E. Stevenson PG David Cain who led his team to the State Championship game vs eventual Winners, Christ the King in New York State. If players weren't elected according to position, many players who were selected wouldn't be but I believe that's the best way to do it. Every player in this Capitol Classic was a Top 100 Recruit (except Regan) & nominated to the McDonald's All American Team. Because you're nominated doesn't mean you're on the final team. Several players missing from this game who were McDonald's All Americans because of state playoffs obligations were Pennsylvania's SG Billy McCaffery who went to Duke then transferred to Vanderbilt. McCaffery's brother, Ed was a veteran of the NFL's Denver Broncos at WR & Billy's Nephew (Ed's son) Christian McCaffrey played for Stanford at RB & was a 1st Round Draft pick. Also missing was LA's Calvin Byrd who went to Villanova, PF Anthony Cade & NJ PG Bobby Hurley Jr. from St. Anthony's who went to Duke. Of course out of this entire list, only a handful of players made it to the NBA with only a couple having a career longer than 5 years (George Lynch & Kenny Anderson)...
