Alex's main character trait is not caring about things. Exhibit A: the groceries -- Exhibit B: Rory's sister.
“I don’t care ‘bout nothin’ and I gots a sick-ass beard” - Alex
The fate of the groceries is what is keeping me tied to the story honestly.
He cares about one thing: not being told WHAT'S GOING ON! That makes him hold his hands on the sides of his head and shout.
"Who CARES about your dead kid sister, connected to the Soul Creeps! We should be talking about MY dead girl! Who was taken by the Soul Creeps and that I met for less than an hour a day or two ago! SHE'S what matters, because she had a cat and was weird and rude to me!"
He cares about the girl he met once that was a bitch to him.
I like how they didn't even bother drawing michael angry. Totally doesn't make me burst out laughing when he's shouting angrily at alex with a neutral pose and expression
michael is simply just too tired to truly angry
One normal guy who has to wrangle every other of the tismos
you expect them to draw a whole extra picture get the hell out of here you're crazy
Michael quietly had his hand over his mouth
michael becomes so pointless that they have to write a bizarre character arc into the plot last minute just to give him something to do
From the sewer section until that part, all he does is follow around, be generally agreeable, and be too mean to Alex for it to be mistaken for a friendly jab
I was fucking waiting this whole series for Chris' reaction to "no one cares about your dead sister right now!"
and his reaction being "I'm kinda on alexs side" makes sense. rory did lead them into a death trap with various creatures and multidimensional entities.
@@ShaneStapler I'm so glad i'm not alone on this like this game is trash in general, but Alex was kinda right about what Rory did to them and honestly I think my empathy for a person would run a little dry too if they almost led me to my death.
@@SilentTheViewer I don't know. Alex's main goal seems to be trying to figure out what the entities are and what they want. Rory led them to a similar location, as the abandoned warehouse, that they seem to reside. Also, Rory's dead sister is what gets Vella to open up about these things, because she seems to have at least most of the answers Alex is looking for. I don't think Alex would've gotten anything if he didn't follow Rory, and at this point he already seems like he's willing to fight and explore dangerous places for his manchild-like adventure.
@@zanpakutoman4225 That is Alex's main goal true, but Rory led them to that location under false pretenses because he genuinely believed he would find his sister there despite knowing that she committed suicide .Where as Alex is just looking for answers as to what these things are in general and as much of a douche he is and comes off as. was willing to believe Rory when he lied about the entity abducting his sister and decides to go there to find her with Rory.
@@SilentTheViewer is it really lying then if he believes that the Starman (refuse to call it anything else) was his sister?
Do you guys think Rory's sister ALSO said 'go on without me' in a disinterested tone when she committed sewerslide?
“UUUgghhhh, I’ll be back later”
That's how it happened too, she went down a slide in the sewer they were in and got infected
I love the sewerslide it's the best slide
I can picture it now, the mario 64 slide music was playing and she long jumped into it

@@PrismTheKid exactly
Milhouse: "When are they going to get to Alex's mom's groceries??" *Sobs*
Alex went back to his home planet but his comet ship exploded on the way.
Alex to his mom: “Nobody cares about your groceries”
Michael: “Hey, cool it man, she clearly just needed some milk and eggs”
Have we seen his mother at all yet? I'm calling it now, she got Soulnapped or whatever is going on here
@@AfferbeckBeats
I'm just gonna assume the Mom is just inspired from Ness's Dad in Earthbound, in which you don't see either of them ingame.
Haha!
Its a good thing Michael was there to remind Alex what was important: The girl Alex knew for an hour.
Okay NOW there's the "nobody cares about your dead sister" moment
The reaction is as good as I expected
@@User7624name oh jesus
@@User7624name That does NOT sound good.
the game introduces 2 black party members at the same time during an absolutely pointless filler arc. They have southern accents. Only one of them is voiced by a black VA.
They go on at length at one point about the case of a black girl going missing and how nobody cared. They get very emotional and Alex has to fumble through it by himself. It's great
@@PrismTheKid Alex screams "NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR BLACK RACE RIGHT NOW!"
@@Assimandeli yeah maybe i will
The funniest part wasn’t just the reaction to the “No one cares about your sister.” line, but their reaction of Vella’s shocked face right after. That was amazing.
Micheal's dialogue sprites did not fit that scene at all, It's almost like they made 3 because he never speaks
Certainly seems like it because when he screams about his camera he doesnt change sprites
@@DakkaSolae to be fair i think the delivery at that point was just bad

I love that Michael was just sitting in silence for almost that entire chapter and the first thing he says after his amazingly long silence is "Alex shut up"
I had to stop for a second because I realized that "God" quote, "Eloi, Eloi, lama Sabachthani?" is the quote of Jesus on the cross that translates to him crying out "God, God, why have you forsaken me?"
Just seeing that quote in a game with pixel people kind of almost gave me a stroke.

Chris: lol. lmao
Everytime they upload the next part of this I'm amazed they haven't stopped playing yet, not that I'm complaining. I can't get enough of Alexander Yiik's iconic screaming pose.

This makes the fact Alex tried kissing him worse, somehow.
"Michael have you been playing attention to my Extra-Planar Spirituality 101 class, this'll be on test."
Michael takes a photo of a sewage pipe with a rat sleeping on it, "huh?"
"See Alek YIIK? Michael gets it."
Every time Michael speaks in angry/shocked lines I die laughing - he's somehow even hammier than the other cast members put together oh my god

...And Yiik is not famous for subverting stereotypes
Well his va also voices an anime character who's whole personality is that he's pissed off all the time
@@ShadeTavish I hope for the sake of his career that the direction is far better for him in his other roles lmao
I must say, I've really enjoyed the adventures of Alex YIIK.
YES, finally we get to the point in the story where Alex reaches his peak. A true masterpiece of a game
Alex YIIK is the deepest, most intelligent vidya game character. He teaches us true life lessons, such as: why buy groceries today, when you can put off the shopping trip until tomorrow? I've really taken this lesson to heart.
He also teaches us the lesson of “scream with desperation in the face of adversity. also tell your friend no one cares that his sister killed herself.” Truly a philosopher to rival Aristotle himself.
If this game took place know Alex Yiik would be an avid Rick and Marty watcher
Even after watching every episode so far, I still have no idea what the story of this game is supposed to be.
"Im smart" story
The world is gonna end
I think
I think it's "What if the Illuminati and Religion were aliens?"
All I know so far is that Alex still didn't buy groceries
Me too lol
god the way they tried to do foreshadowing with the thrones makes me mad because its too surreal to understand whats going on so the most you get is a moment of "hey i remember seeing those" but it doesn't actually mean jack shit.
Ironically, it's exactly like Game of Thrones foreshadowing, where none of it meant anything in the end
@@AfferbeckBeats that's because the foreshadowing from the books wasn't properly delivered in the seasons where they don't follow the books.
I was afraid they removed the "no one cares about your sister"
Same. It's exactly the kind of petty garbage this dev would do just to be an asshole.
I also expected it to be removed, considering that the dev is on a sort of tantrum trying to make a bad game worse.
02:10 i love that marge's picture appears in the middle of the turn based fight, next to the UI it looks like its part of the game and you have to balance her so she doesn't fall lmao
I like that Ding Dong has retained "tacooos!" as a go-to random humor example since playing Night in the Woods.

Rory sounds like freaking Mandark from Dexter's Laboratory.
That is all.
That hearty belly laugh from all the boys at “no one cares about your dead sister” was quite satisfying

Rory's sign text should change during battle based on how healthy he is and who he's protecting, etc. If earthbound was an actual inspiration and not just a thematic cop-out, they should be doing unique things during battles, not just a barebones turn based rpg battle with minigames. Maybe sometimes his sign could have a button prompt for a split second and if you are fast enough, you get a small boost to something during the battle, health, stats, etc. Just needs more balance and odd suprises, 90% of what made earthbounds battles great wasn't who you were fighting, but how they acted.
To be fair there are quite a few minigames
I think this was largely done by one guy wasn't it?
Also you say that but it took me until THIS EPISODE to be able to read rory's sign
@@Skullkan6 It was mostly made by two brothers who had a game studio, and a publisher helping out. Regardless of the limit of their reach/scope, this games issues are rooted in its design and writing, and could've been fixed by them. They dont have an excuse.
There really aren't that many actual minigames. They look varied now, but repeat them over 25+ hours of gameplay. Also remember that the ones with the sprites are newly added and weren't there in the original version.
Plus they all have the problem of being cut poorly. Mario and Luigi rpgs are perfect at the minigames because they're snappy, effective, and intuitive. But here there's a "get ready" prompt every time for something, you're basically required to screw them up the first bunch of times to even learn them, the minigames overall lack consistency between styles, and aren't even worth it since most skills are worthless for damage.
Oh fuck off Earthbound does not have that much variety in its combat
@@Phoenixifyable I mean it's certainly done some of the weirder things in a jrpg with its combat.
Alex was written to be unlikable, but that doesn't mean that he's a good character. Not even the creator understands that, which is telling. If Alex grew from his mistakes, then maybe he'd be fine, but he doesn't, none of them do.
main problem of the game is that Alex's character flaw is he thinks the world revolves around him, and that's meant to be his character arc, but then the plot is like 'no alex you're actually right it does'
he's also extremely hard to listen to. If he didn't talk it would probably be fine, he'd just be a goofy looking character model that resembles a member of yogscast
@@PrismTheKid Exactly. Alex is very hard to listen to (not sure how he someone hasn't knocked him out yet), but I'd be fine with it if he become respectable by the end. Or at least have him be a caring Jerk rather than just a jerk. FF7 did it really well with Cloud and Barret's friendship.
If you want a good and likeable character that was written to be unlikable it would be someone like Rufus from Deponia. Part of why he's well written and likeable is because his being a jerk constantly bites him in the ass.
I actually disagree on one point. Growing and changing isn’t inherently necessary to make a mean spirited unlikable character from being written in a likable manner. The main thing is that if your character isn’t someone we empathize with or care for morally, we should at the least find them interesting and have some depth. The problem here is that Alex is the shallow end of the swimming pool from day 1 and we never learn more about his personality or character. We learn about his place in the universe, but that doesn’t inform us about *who* he is. He starts at, random schlub, and he ends at random schlub but also the prophecy. He isn’t really unlikable but boring and one note.
7:08 god this had me laughing at work so hard. "simber, simber my son"
reminded me of Wambo lmao
They faced a creepo sentient man, monster stuff, and truged through the sewer, but what finally broke Michael was to tell Alex to stfu. What a glorious moment
Right?
I was kinda with Alex on the whole "no one cares about your sister right now" thing, because like, they just fought two entirely other worldly beings, because Rory lied, and he is reasonably upset
And Michael finally snaps out of his fugue state to yell at Alex "hey, this isn't about you man"
With how much Ding Dong and Julian seem to know arbitrary facts about voice actors I’m kind of surprised they don’t know about DC Douglas voicing the Alpaca.
Wesker himself?
The only way to get Michael to speak up is to tell him it's his birthday today.
CAKE AND ICE CREAM IS ON ITS WAY
He's been a good boy today

It's the worst. The pacing, the tone, the dialogue, oh man.

Vella's reaction to Alex "No one cares about your sister" line was kinda cute and hilarious because of the commentary.
Chris' sneeze shaking the screen at 3:00 🤣
I just noticed how Vella is the only character who has several portraits that match her reactions, unlike the others.
You mean to tell me that they gave two portraits for Alex where he's constantly shocked but not one where he's angry?
Am I alone in saying that Michaels design is maybe the most boring looking thing I’ve ever seen? it’s just default create a character with a Dennis the menace jumper.
I guess they can't do much with "young ordinary milquetoast man" in terms of design
He’s dressed like Chris Chan. All he needs is the medallion
The Freddy Krueger/Chris Chan sweater
He looks more like scout without anything that made scout memorable. But tbh, all of the designs look uninteresting and don't have any charm. Which I guess is fitting, because outside of Alex the rest of the main characters don't have distinct or fleshed out personalities to make them interesting.
He looks like a background character
He was sad, so it's okay to lie, and put us in mortal danger. Writing at its finest
Did he really lie about it? It seemed more to me like he only misunderstood, and then the mortal danger just sort of happened upon them due to plot convenience. I mean either way, absolutely trash writing.
@@saxninja8464 No, he knew that his sister killed himself, so there wasn't any mystery as to where she was-- and it definitely wasn't in the sewer.

The return of the iconic Big Penny
Frankly I despise Alex but I'm kinda with him on this one. Rory doesn't know what he is doing and almost killed everyone. Vella is cute but preachy af and bossy too. If I was in Alex's place I wouldn't let her boss me around, he met her, like, yesterday and you told us you stole that body from the Vella of this reality, stop telling me what to do. Honestly the whole thing seems forced, maybe something similar happened to the developers and they thought that would make a good plot point? In jrpgs(which this game seems to be based on) the party can get separated sometimes (just to get together again later) and that's gives you a chance to rethink your strategies but it's always for serious reasons. Alex being insensitive seems like a silly reason.
Vella didn't steal a body, she was just able to exist in this reality without being hunted down because this reality's Vella had already left (either literally or she died, we don't know). But I do agree that she's preachy as fuck. The fact that she's always meant to be in the right is annoying too.
@@klg9549 it's most like the exposition dumps are too boring and long for people to care.
I agree, everyone immediately write Alex off as a complete ahole because of that scene but he has a point there, they were lied to and dragged to a dangerous situation by someone they just met thru the internet anyway would be pissed, yeah he didn't say it in the nicest way but that doesn't make his point invalid I mean they could've easily died.
Micheal finally talked after 2 episodes only to yell at Alex lol
Bro right when I think Alex is making a valid point or doing something that makes me dislike him less as a character the rest of the cast reprimand him for it

you can't just risk other people's lives despite your depression or your loss, or act like an online creep, and not expecting someone to get at least angry at you.
it's the one defensible time alex gets pissed at his friends
he of course says it in a really offensive way, which loses any credibility he had with the rest of the party, and he's also shown at times to be extremely whiny/beligerent so it's hard to give him this one time

@@BrawlStrats oh yeah I get that for sure but my point is that even as a frustrated response it feels very forced
He is intentionally unlikeable but it takes most of the game to get better or genuinely connecting with other characters.
