You know the game is “special” when an entire episode is spent on a single battle encounter
The thing was sped up to, most time
And yet one of them still attempts to defend the game from the hate it gets.
@@nick0875 what's the point of talking about games if you can't find anything you like? Well, I asume that may come across a bit naïeve of me.
Though, the game still isn't good
@@anoniem652 No its just one of their earlier statements was that people were wanting this game to fail when it was first released and acting like it gets way too much hate. And on one hand I can see where they are coming from as I believe they have said they are trying to make their own game, so they know the difficulties in actually making and releasing a product in a finished state as an indie developer. With all of the games on Steam that are permanently stuck in early access or are just stolen asset cash grabs I respect developers who put out a complete product. But as the paying customer I feel that calling the game out for being bad is something that people have the right to do. Yes this game has some upsides to it but there are so many glaring flaws that its hard to justify a defense. With a combat system as basic as this one it shouldn't take so long to beat regular encounters, but it does and that's a major problem with any turn base rpg. This makes me question whether or not they even play tested their game before release as that is an issue that pops up rather early in the game.
remember when ms. frizzles’ party entered arnold’s mind dungeon?
Man Arnold sure was embarrassed when they uncovered his darkest fantasies room
Remember the time when Ms. Frizzle sent Arnold into space without a helmet?
Peter, remember the time when Arnold didn't get the groceries?
I thought it was really shocking when Ralphie screamed at Arnold that no one cared about his dead cousin. And then at the end of the episode, he didn't even apologize.
@@diegoontour Okay this is where I draw the line, Arnold would totally have gotten the groceries, he actually cares about his family, even his stupid cousin.
This whole episode is just fighting one random encounter. And it's all for a ladder. Holy shit.
We're not even sure what the ladder's purpose is!
This part of the game has been one hell of a *climb.*
This series has gotta end soon or else
What a thrill
It says more about the game than it does Chris.
If you are a game developer struggling to add length to your game, just turn random encounters into full-blown boss battles by making every enemy a damage-sponge and giving your playable characters the offensive capabilities of a wet noodle.
Misery is the exact person who would say something so scathing
@Octavia That’s because she’s a sassy queen.
Sounds like most of the LISA fangames I’ve played
That basically summarises my experience playing Bravely Default. As someone with zero patience for grind-heavy rpg’s, where even a level 1 rat will take years to kill, it was agonising
You know the battle system is great when it single battle takes up almost the entire runtime of the video.
It's fuckin painful. Thank God we're not here for the game, but I cannot imagine having the patience to play this.
I guess it's because they realised there's not many enemies to fight in the game overall so they made it so you can't just plough through them all and move on, you can tell because of how many times they reuse the same few enemies. But there's not even much strategy involved to make it interesting so your mind just goes numb out of sheer boredom. I mean 80% of the time I'm not even watching this playthrough, mostly listening.
That doesn't seem to unreasonable for an important boss fight, especially in an RPG. Which boss did they fight anywa-
oh...
Almost 15 minutes for an encounter that gave them 30 xp.
So is this just a case of them not playing correctly? they skipped a ton of fights, they are 4 levels lower than the other save which has less playtime and are 3 levels behind the monsters in the fight, i haven't seen them really buy equipment or anything (though could be during cuts) and half the minigame attacks they dont know how they work properly, or at least Chris doesn't.
7:06 Sure, technically Alex YIIK apologized to Vella, but it sounded more like when you're 5 and your mom tells you to say sorry to your sister after a fight. It sounded very insincere, though I'd be more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if I felt like he deserved it, which he doesn't. I feel bad for his mom; living with Alex feels like it would be so emotionally draining that you'd rather just stay at work. Maybe if they gave him some characteristic, a seed planted within his peanut brain, that people could see potential in, then growing that over the story, he could be a likeable character. But no, dude can't even apologize to his "friends" correctly...
i agree. it feels like hes only kind of nice to his mom because he lives under the same roof as her and doesnt want to get thrown out. if they put in character traits of him actually caring about some of the people close to him (at least to his mom and micheal, since one is his only parent and the other is his childhood friend), or add stuff like not understanding tone of voice that would explain his rude comments most of the time.
like, Semi Pak could be changed to be his childhood best friend that hes had a crush on all this time. it would explain why he's so obsessed with saving her throughout the game and we could have gotten moments where he could be genuinely friendly and affectionate towards her, which would give him at least *some* likeable traits. his bad behavior throughout the story could be excused as him trying to deal with his grief of losing Semi and also the stress of him being unsure if shes still even alive or not.
that could be the lesson of this new rewrite, learning to not let grief take control of you. Alex could be coping with Semi's death by making up this whole RPG quest in his head to distract himself from the truth; Semi is genuinely dead, the elevator crashed and he survived.
@@Jibberr_Jabberr All good ideas, I must say. At this point, Alex almost feels oddly punchbag-y. Like yes, he's not a particularly nice person, but it feels like the writer really wants to take stuff out on someone. Especially when you consider the ending the creator ended up choosing over the actually-satisfying one. He's like a "fuck you."
@@Jibberr_Jabberr This is what's frustrating to me. It's that what you were talking about sounded like it could give Alex actual character. It's almost as though you put more effort into make the character than the dev and that's just confusing.
There may not be one way to write a character, but like KLG down here said, Alex really does feel more like a punching bag than a genuine character with motives. Even if Alex started the same, going after a girl he didn't even know, maybe part way through he realizes what he was doing was wrong or that he was coping with something or whatever.
I might've actually liked Alex if he took the Cloud Strife approach and became more likeable, not just to the other party members, but also the viewer. Possibly going from "look at this doof", to, "you can do it, Alex", or something along those lines. I always joke about how bad the game and it's characters/story is, but seeing comments like yours always reminds me that there was potential and it makes me a little sad to be honest.
I think the issue is he only really feels ""sorry"" when something bad happens to *him*. He didn't go out of his way to apologize to Vella because he understood that he messed up, it seems like he apologized simply because he needed her help with the record.
@@Jibberr_Jabberr He’s not even nice to his mom! He still hasn’t gotten the goddamn groceries!

You know what’s fun? Making “boss” versions of enemies with even higher defense, including enemies who can heal themselves more than the four separate attacks you give out
The duality of rpgs
The funny thing is, even if the enemies stood there and didn't do anything fights would still take too long because apparently you're only allowed to do 5% of an enemies hp bar as damage unless you are overleveled. I haven't personally played this game but it looks like Chris is properly leveling and putting in stat points Ding Dong recommends so I can't wrap my head around why its so hard to kill stuff and how little thought was put into some of the skills. How can there be OP defensive skills like the panda and item share but every attack that gobbles up your already limited EP pool does marginally more damage and is tied to a reflex minigame which if you fuck up makes it a complete miss....
@@Immor7alBG you’re completely right. I played it and quit around this time, and I was a higher level than Chris has been. It’s been the exact same experience, like I’m almost positive that you have to pass a level threshold for attacks to do anything. In fact, I was stuck in that exact fight for an hour and a half. It’s absolutely insane. And that doesn’t include other problems, like Chondra’s beat down/original attack needed you to be perfect ten times in a row. One mistake and your combo resets to zero
@@Kumaclaws im certain this game would have gotten absolutely destroyed even worse than it was if lp toss wasn't so busted on release, how the dev thought to fix it but not look at why it was so abused in the first place is absurd.
If player characters are capable of healing themselves, so should monsters. On paper there's actually nothing wrong with what you're passive-aggressively complaining about, and it's been done quite well in other RPGs for decades.
I absolutely hate this game but i love watching you guys play it
I wish they wouldnt have wasted so much time on this dumpster fire and instead played more OOT
@SadisticAphid 60 shit bait
I've noticed that Vella dealt a shitton of damage to the aliens, yet Claudio deals none. And I think it has to do with their attack 'types' (the little icons next to the Attack button). So Vellla's attack would be super effective, whereas Claudio's would be less effective against certain monsters.
I THINK that might be going on, shame the game doesn't give any information whatsoever about those icons (or anything at all for that matter).
Fun fact: you can actually disable the elemental typing system per character, removing weakened attacks but also removing supereffective attacks
Only Vella's beat down does lots of damage. Her normal attack did only 1 damage to the alien.
I am also fairly sure they are using basic gear, but I just listened to this episode, can't stand combat in YIIK
And they said the game "isn't bad"
No information about those icons, or the enemies. And the text flies by at the speed of light. And while this combat system should be fun on paper, they've made the minigames for the attacks too involved and abstract, and the attack doesn't connect with the enemy until about a full second after you've completed the minigame so you lose all feeling of kinetic energy and connection to the attack.
What a mess.
chris: I assume that we beat these things we get a shitton of exp.
dd: ahahaha...haha... no!
that's the perfect summary of this game trying to pretend to be an rpg

I liked the part in YIIK where you fight aliens for a looooooooooooooooong time
12:38 After hearing the full quote that is “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one" made me realize that being good at many things, but not a master at anything, isn't a bad thing. I always got the impression that you won't make it as far unless you have that one thing that you're amazing at (unless you have a team I guess), but being good at a lot of different stuff gives you an advantage. Either way, I just found the full quote interesting, because I didn't think there was anymore to it than what I was told. It may or may not make you feel better knowing this, but at the very least I don't think that time was wasted, probably.
It's like "Curiosity killed the cat." It's really "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." It's a shame that we've latched onto the negative halves of these phrases and forgotten the positives.
@@klg9549 I think that it could also be that the shortened versions are easier to remember and so people forget the rest, but I don't doubt that the negativity has a big part.
I thought that maybe it was because the short versions had more impact in the messages or something (even if they're usually more negative), but the cat one you quoted has more character in it's whole. I don't know, maybe it's because it's just more repeatable. But yeah, it would be nice if more people know about the full quotes, because they seem to have more positive messages than we were led to believe.
Either way, I haven't heard the cat one in full before you quoted it. I do wonder how many cases of this I can find online.
My take is that the one thing you need to do to make any kind of character likeable is to give them another character that they sincerely and unconditionally care about.
Chris, you are a master of comedy and entertainment. I'm not making a joke, you are one of the funniest funnyman
Man that conversation during that fight was incredibly enjoyable. I feel like I listened to a full podcast.

17:59 Fun Fact: the game being referenced here, VA-11 Hall-A Cyberpunk Action, has an Alex Yiik figurine you can buy to decorate your house. And here was I wondering why that was a thing.
The way Chris describes trying to get into EarthBound makes me think that he should just accept that FF7 is the only real RPG he's ever going to like and that's just because he has an unconditional childhood attachment to it.
I love RPGs, including FF7, and I can't get into Earthbound, either. The furthest I've gotten was Fourside (I couldn't figure out where to go, and wasn't enjoying the game enough to figure it out). The truth is that Earthbound is both a fairly early and very unique RPG and it's really not for everyone. And while I'm not saying that the game doesn't hold up (despite not enjoying it I would say it has aged very well), I am certain that a huge portion of the love for Earthbound comes from an unconditional childhood attachment to it.
@@EncryptedLiberty I can understand dropping a game because you got stuck and couldn't be arsed to look it up, hell, the same thing happened to me with Hollow Knight. But Chris literally hadn't gotten to the first dungeon yet, he just doesn't have the attention span for them it seems.
Chris has admitted that lol, he doesnt even like RPGs he just likes FF7 because of the story, music, writing ect
@@EncryptedLiberty Earthbound is definitely more akin to the original Dragon Quest type of JRPG game design. that's why I enjoyed it, but it's definitely requires a particular taste to want to play through games like that. Perhaps Oney does not enjoy most VRPGs, but @Alex is being a bit unfair not acknowledging that there are different 'flavors' of VRPGs that one might not be all that accustomed to. hell, I'd say that despite the 'type' of design Earthbound entails, many fans of it may enjoy the game in spite of the fact that it is designed similar to DQ1.

Thanks you roly polys
Earthbound is an actual throwback to old school JRPGs. It has more in common with Dragon Quest II than any Final Fantasy, for example. A fair amount of the mechanical fun of the game is understanding the limitations it puts on you and planning around them. For example, planning around the limited inventory that your party will have, going into each dungeon, you think loading up on healing items is the best strategy but the teddy bear items (which act as stacking temporary HP and can also protect you from status effects) that you can start buying in the second town are better than basically any food item you can have access to for half the game. It is legitimately fun to wander around, talk to npcs and explore towns, but most of the novelty has been ground out of it by its imitators.
And the main mechanic of the Starmen was that they were high powered psychic(magic) enemies, so you had to plan around that. The higher tier versions would use attacks every other turn that could potentially wipe an endgame party if you didn't put up the right defenses to reduce, negate or reflect the damage or speed-blitz them to death first. Which also requires you to keep/use an accessory that massively boosts one character's speed, but that comes at opportunity cost with accessories that are more useful for general damage reduction/negation.

Ah yes, more Yiik. But what I need is even more Yiik than this! No amount of Yiik is ever enough Yiik.
My take on character count in storytelling is that it's easier to write smaller stories (less twists, simpler narrative, just one arc, etc), but you can't get 60 hours of gameplay outta a simple story, so that's why you add more characters. Games have characters with basically no screentime because the devs didn't know what to do with them and just rolled with it anyway, not because they're fighting for screentime.
you nailed it, games are long expansive worlds almost life like in the biggest ones. Long stories don't need multiple characters, but multiple characters add reason to continue playing.
Personally as an RPG developer, I feel the sweet spot for party members in total is four or fewer. No more player characters than enough to fill an entire _single_ active battle party. No having to shuffle party members in and out to pass arbitrary obstacles, no having to write a story reason for Guest Party Member 4 to stop and Guest Party Member 2 to suddenly be able to join again for ten minutes and leave with whatever equipment you gave him permanently, and having lot of potential separate dynamics.
Usually when I'm writing character dialog, though, I can only manage a duo or trio of heroes well and if I have four party members, one of them winds up simply getting a lot less attention than the others.
As an RPG _player_ there were like eight? ten? player characters in Breath of Fire 2 but I only cared about Ryu because he was the main character, Bow and Rand, Katt, and Jean. Everyone else felt like filler. Dragon Quest 8 had exactly four heroes and I liked all of them; apparently later ports made a couple of memorable NPCs suddenly playable and I can't imagine that not throwing off the dynamic (the hero not demonstrating much of a personality and not being referred to by name doesn't help; voice acting and renamable heroes _simply don't mix_ though the silent protagonist schtick can work quite well if the hero actually demonstrates a little personality here and there).

I do love the game design talk and advice. It's very inspirational
the commentary for this episode felt more like a podcast to me
I wish Chris talked more about the color theory thing because I've seen some pretentious people bring that up like it's a rule of thumb.
Because color theory is essential to understand how colors can work together on the canvas but in alluding to what Chris says, blue doesn't have to be sad colors or Red has to be anger, or Pink be girly. There can be combinations of saturated and calm colors that can make emotions, no need to stick to a limited pallete for most drawings. Though monochrome can look really pretty in drawings, there's always room for exploration.
Didn't expect a VA-11 Hall-A reference in this game, or a Read Only Memories one too

Earthbound is pretty good. I can see how this game was inspired by it. Watching you guys play this made me want to buy Yiik when the series first started. I'm not so sure anymore as I watch the playthrough but I might get it anyway to support the developer. But back to Earthbound, it's your basic RPG. It's like Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior, but it's quirky and different with dry humor at times. Some of the interesting twist are that it takes place in the 90s. You have psychic powers instead of magic. Ness uses a baseball bat instead of a sword and even though he's the main hero, most of his magic/psychic skills are healing/defense based while the female character in your party has all of the attacking magic. Plus there's a bunch of trippy stuff that happens throughout the game. I love it myself because I have memories of my friend's older brother playing it when I was a kid, and I played through the series myself as an adult. I think Earthbound is the best of the series. Mother 3 is good and has improvements but the pacing feels off to me and they removed some good things from Earthbound. Earthbound Zero or Mother is fine too. It's kind of slog because it's an NES RPG but like Final Fantasy it's amazing they made such a game for the NES. Also like FF though you can have seven random battles in a row in the course of two steps. And Zero's dungeons are ridiculous. A dungeon will consist of the same repeated room with only 2 exits but it could be a 30-100 room dungeon. Which means you repeatedly have to choose to between the left and right door until you hit a dead end or are lucky enough to get to the right spot. Zero did have a cool idea with the bread item though that I wish carried over. You can eat it to regain health like a normal healing item but if click use instead then you can leave a trail of bread crumbs that lets you auto exit a dungeon.
The Valhalla references reminded me that I really need to finish that game lol
I love how this whole episode was one battle
In regards to the discussion of being a "jack of all trades" I kind of agree with how Chris feels since I'm in a similar situation. You spend so much time learning skills that you end up not having the energy to use them. Right now I'm juggling learning 3d animation, modeling, photogrammetry, game design, and coding AND I already have a background in art and design. I can't commit to one specific thing to specialize because I find EVERYTHING interesting.
I really love collaborating with people on projects. The only problem I've had is that most people I've worked on projects have next to no discipline, too derivative, or can't justify ideas they come up with. At first I thought it was a consequence of living in a small city, but people online are just as bad.
If it makes you feel any better, just remember the full phrase is "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
Wasn't expecting a VA-11 Hall-A reference from this game.
It's almost as jarring as when YIIK gets mentioned as a revolutionary game in VA-11 Hall-A.
At least we're living in the timeline where the good game became a cult classic, though.
That's because both Va-11 Hall-A and YIIK were published by Ysbrid Games.
Of course, Va-11 Hall-A was released while YIIK was still in developement so they had no idea how bad the final project would be.
YIIK is the indie game equivalent of betting on a horse who ended up during the race to left the race and going straight to the glue factory.
the real character development of YIIK was Chris catching himself about to say retarded and saying ridiculous instead
A lot of people are repeating the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none, is often times better than a master of one" and saying that it's the full original version, but It's actually the opposite.
Like a lot of idioms nowadays more parts gets added on as time goes on, and you might be shocked to know that even the second line isn't part of the original.
The first recorded use of the phrase was just "Jack of all Trades" from page fifty of the book Essayes and Characters of a Prison and Prisoners where it's used in the passage:
"Now for the moft part your porter is either fome broken cittizen, who hath plaid Jack-of-all-trades, fome pander, broker, or hangman, that hath plaid the knaue with all men, and for the more certainty his embleme is a red beard, to which facke hath made his nofe coufin german."
While for context he's not writing a Jack of all Trades in good light, it's not until much later that someone rewrote it and added the second phrase, "Master of None" to further cement the idea that to have general skills isn't as good as specialized skills.
Now this isn't to say that you can't find meaning in the newer version, in fact language is constantly evolving and as I said before idioms constantly have new meaning tacked on and spread around, but it's important to know the roots of things, even if you have to learn them in a comment section of a twenty-three part series by OneyPlays.
More Yiik to poison my brain!!!
Such a long battle but I really appreciated the conversations throughout it :^)
I am having a great time watching the YIIK videos. While the game is bad it is interesting seeing all the strange decisions the developer made. I hope this continues and the creator keeps trying making games, hopefully learning from this on what to and not to do.
Alex Yeek is really Arnold from the magic school bus grown up. That's why they're playing it side-by-side with the magic school bus! Huzzah!
I'm 2 years late to this, but I didn't expect a Jim Gillette reference on OneyPlays. His band Nitro was tons of fun in the 80s.
A regular encounter should not take over ten minutes to complete.
One thing leads to another. Music is something we can *all* do with each other
I woud also argue that it evokes a strong emotional reaction each and every time while animation often uses it as a crutch. Music is synonymous with feeling
This was honestly a really inspiring Alex Yiik episode
funny how there's some genuine wisdom to be gained from this video about yiik
I think humans should be jack of all trades. The bottom line is, if something prevents you from using your one or two mastered skills then you're fucked. Humans are the only animal capable of learning so many skills as well as we can. It's unique to us and is a key element in our evolution, adaptation. Why live one life, when you can live several? Who cares about the quality of that life, when it's only one.
