- Hygge is the Danish concept of relaxation and coziness. You've probably experienced hygge without knowing it. When you curl up in your sweats, light a candle, put on water for tea, grab a good book, you've got the perfect recipe for a hyggelig evening. But when hygge reached the U.S., it became more of a commodity than a state of being. Some Danes take issue with the commercialization of their tradition. But experts say elements of hygge could be beneficial, regardless of how they're packaged.

How Hygge Took Over America
Americans do not understand hygge as a concept. It is not just relaxing, it is a way of living your life. It is a way of building society so that it is not overwhelming and not overly stressful. The core of the principle lies in making comfort a priority; it staves off depression, which for Danes has always been crucial. It is not just a cozy fire with mulled wine on an autumn evening, it is prioritizing time with your friends, it is in being welcoming to strangers, it is in planning your life with realistic, achievable goals. American culture is the antithesis of hygge. Please stop trying to appropriate the concept if you don't respect it or care about Danish culture. Danish culture is just cozy, and while some American finance person in a suit may scoff at it, Danes scoff at him and think he is a d-bag.
I would disagree. The Midwest has been doing Hygge for a long time. We just called it something differently. Hygge boils down to a way to be happy during the cold months of the year. Curling up with a good book is Hygge.
USAers _do_ understand the concept of Hygge. They just think it's silly and naïve, something for wimps, nerds and immature individuals. The _de facto_ religion of the US is the California/American Dream, of "keeping up with the Joneses".
What this means is that you have to own and drive a sleek, new SUV, luxury car or sports car, and preferably live in a nice, big, suburban home. That way, you'll be seen as COOL, everyone will respect and admire you as a winner, and all the women will love you. Otherwise, you will be considered a failure, loser, a nobody; no one will be your friend or want to marry you. This isn't the so much the case in New York; while going into overdrive in China.

It's not about winter, although that's how people who live in cold or temperate climates tend to think about it, because we mostly live indoors during that time, and the winter nights are very long. It's basically a way to fend off depression by being mindful of the pleasures of small moments.
Not about winter at all. You can hygge in the summer too.

I was an au pair in Denmark for almost 2 years and i love hygge 😌 even though I don’t live in Denmark anymore I still practice this way of living.

My Viking ancestors have once again conquered North America, lol. It is not just Danish. It is also Norwegian and Swedish, basically Nordic. I’ve been doing this since I was little, going around turning on lights or as an adult put out lamps or lighting, making lap quilts and candles, an emphasis on expanding the cozy factor in the houses I live in or have remodeled. In truth, in most ways, it has been embraced here as a marketing concept, around which to combine products. More power to them!

Kinda, but it can be a lot of things, to be honest it’s more of a feeling than anything. The feeling of snuggling into your partner in the cold winter in front of the fire place. Friends not seeing each other for a long time and hanging out. Having a pint with your best mate. Talking for hours with your family. It’s not just cozy, but cozy can be a part of it. It’s the relaxing feeling you get when everything is just right, and all worries are placed aside for just a moment, where time skips because you just had fun. It’s kinda another word for happiness and it’s a way of living. It’s kinda hard to describe, but I try to live by Hygge as much as possible.

Well; As a Dane I can testify to the fact,that anti depressents plays a huge part. Many Danes roll theor eyes every time those happiness statistics come out because it's not recognisable to everyday experiences.
A high number of the population are on anti depressants and mental illness is pretty common.
Also, since more and more Danes aspire to the American model of "money makes happy" people get more and more prone to stress, anxiety and depression.
Hygge is wonderful but loneliness is also at an alltime high. When you do a specoal like this, nuances would be appropriate.
Mental health issues aren't worse than in Denmark than any other country.
Having a higher consumption of anti-depressants than USA merely reflects that we have free and equal acces to our universal health care.
i get the lighting thing, i've always disliked pure white lighting because of how unnatural and cold it felt, this is an interesting topic but i guess it hasn't really been discussed much before because it's quite inherent
You can say hygge to a lot of things. If you went to a party, and a friend of urs that wasn't there ask you how it went, you could say: ''It was very hyggeligt''/hygge. It isn't just relaxation and coziness. mostly that, but can still be used to explain most good experiences, or situations. It's not that deep though lol

Would you do a series about other words that Americans lack that could enhance quality of life? Someone else commented about the Japanese word for "death by overworking" but it might be nice to highlight native/first-peoples' words and explain their context for instance.

Non scandi folks can't really just assume they know best and can monetize the concept--such a thing is more or less the antithesis of ACTUAL hygge. Just say "cozy" and be done with it.

In Norway its basically just a word used while in Denmark its become a part of the danish identity, something it hasnt in Norway, even hearing from other Norwegians is that they barely ever use that word and use other words instead, it is used all the time in Denmark

So what's happening in America is that white Americans have no culture. They gave up their culture for the social construction of whiteness. Two are Danish people are in their home countries and connected to their culture. So when you have privilege white Americans who are bored because they really don't have any social or environmental obstacles. You get things like this. Which is why people like Marie kondo are popular. Because white Americans fantasize other cultures and minorities. And those cultures and minorities become the background to their lives.
So you have a situation where the word cozy and relaxed is no longer good enough for white people. They find the exact same word and a language that's plausible to them and that's a reflection of who they are and then they monetize that. Because everything in America can be monetized. And then you have people were actually spending money to buy this and this is something that already exists for free. It's like that Alanis Morissette song is like a free ride when you already paid. That's up a line from the song. But that's kind of how I see this. But that's America for you it's about consumerism, capitalism and just overall and gluttonous fantasizing of Strange and exotic cultures. And I don't like the word exotic because what the f*** does that mean? Because if you look at all the Marie kondo training videos there's nothing but white women in those training videos. Because they have no social and environmental obstacles. When you're at the top of the economic pyramid. This is what you get. Meanwhile the Working Poor, or looking at folks were saying you're paying people to make your house cozy and relaxing. You can't do that yourself. And then you try to justify it by using the Danish word for it And it just makes you look even more idiotic.
