    Loving the series. I've had my R710 for about a month now and it's been a blast. One other thing I did was to remove the DVD drive and replaces it with a 2.5" adapter. I use that as my boot drive for Proxmox.
    I am using generic cables that I got on amazon and I did run into a cable A error issue, everything worked but was getting the error, the problem was I connected them to the wrong ports. Once that was sorted the error went away.
    I have an R520 on the way, should have it next week, so that will be another fun thing to play around with.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 лет назад +1

      Yup, the ports have to be matched between the backplane and the HBA. Can you share what cables you got that worked? It'll be nice to have a list of 3rd party cables that have the proper sideband and work in the R710.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@ArtofServer Yeah, I was rushing and traced the cable incorrectly.
      I used these cables, found them on a redit post. They are both same lengths and don't have the upwards 90 at the card, but there is a lot of room once you seat the card. Not nearly as tight as the PERC 6i. Maybe not as elegant, but they seem to be working fine. That said I've only rebooted once or twice since fixing them but assume the error is gone for good. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CKXFKHT

    Just a Tip (I often forget): Unless you're a pro fisherman don't screw around over you're open box because magnetic screwdrivers have a server sensor and will choose just that instant to reverse polarity ::D AOS is excused because of the overhead video and he's obviously covering the sensor with his fingertip and holding the bracket screw at the same time. And just in case you're screwing around with teeny non-magnetic screws that came with a drive tray and long tweezers won;t work applying vacuum to a long soda straw or various diameter tubes may work for you...errr yeah, -I mean; so I've heard because I'd never forget and screw around over an open system in a rack...yeah. that's what I' meant.

    I absolutely love these videos. They are extremely helpful. Have you ever experimented using a PCIe M.2 drive adapter card for cache applications? I am modifying an R710 exactly like this and I used an optical drive caddy with a SATA SSD as cache. However, I would prefer to have dual SSD cache so I am contemplating the route of dual PCIe adapter cards as it allows me to install 2 M.2 SSD's and provides power as well. Any thoughts on this?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! I'm glad these videos are helpful to you! Yes, I have used PCIe M.2 adapter cards. In fact, I just made a video about one I sell in my store. Checkout this video: ruclips.net/video/3-sB6zS61Ag/видео.html
      I also showed how you can use an NVMe drive as a boot drive in older machines like the R710, even though they don't support NVMe booting. That video here: ruclips.net/video/SuAn6IG4kF4/видео.html
      As for using for cache application, it should do just fine. But do pick a NVMe drive that is suited to the type of cache you plan to use. Also keep in mind, that R710 is PCIe 2.0, so you lose half the bandwidth on the PCIe x4 link.
      As for the dual M.2 PCIe adapters, be careful that it does not require PCIe port bifurcation, as the R710 does not support such feature. So, if it is a 2x4 (x8) adapter, and it doesn't have a PCIe switch onboard, it will not work in the R710.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  Год назад

      I don't know. Haven't messed with R810 before. Choice of storage controller should be based on what you need. There is a H700 with 1GB cache and CacheCade feature if that is suitable for your needs. Or, if you rather an HBA, then yes look for something else.

    You seem to be an expert on the Dell systems.... would be great if you would do a upgrade video. Can I change a system from 2.5 drives to 3.5 drives etc ...can I upgrade cpu from intel to zeon? Can I run more than on app on a 710 ... like use part for FreeNAS and add poxmox or things 'like' that or just one app per server. If a system does not come with IDRAC can it be install anyway? Stuff like this... Good video.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  2 года назад

      Just because I made a video about one Dell server doesn't make me an expert on Dell systems, nor this particular server model. I only share what I think I know, and there are many viewers in the comments who have contributed their knowledge too.
      I don't quite understand the rest of your questions though... what does "intel to zeon" mean? All Xeon processors are Intel... and of course, like any computer, you can run more than one app... as for FreeNAS/Proxmox, maybe watch the rest of this series as I go into Proxmox.
      yes, iDRAC modules can be installed if you don't have it or they are faulty.

    As a newcomer to the homelab/server world I have a few questions if your willing to answer.
    I have a R710 and a R720xd (26 2.5in bay)
    I have been working on getting Proxmox installed on the R720xd and it would seem I can't use the H710p mini installed to do ZFS. So my understanding from this video is that I will need to buy a HBA card (this should pass the individual drives vs requiring them to be in some form of raid array) for the hypervisor to either pass to a VM or to have a ZFS pool created.
    Which card would you recommend for this and where might I find the part numbers of the parts/cables to buy (either from you if you have stock or elsewhere if you don't)?

    I have a Dell R710 with a SAS 2 backplane and H700 raid controller with 1GB of memory. The backplane accepts 8x2.5" drives. Is it possible to run a 2.5" SATA3 SSD for a boot drive, and four 2.5" 2GB SATA3 HDDs in two raid1 or one raid10 config? If so, what size drives are compatible? I looked at the DELL R710 technical PDF and it doesn't list capability for 6GB/s SATA drives as large as 2GB nor smaller SATA3 SSDs as small as 120GB which is about the size I'd like to have for a boot drive only. What would you suggest as far as drives? Do you have any compatible drives for sale?

      For HDDs, I typically recommend used SATA and SAS HGST enterprise grade HDDs... they are very affordable between 4TB~8TB. And the Best Buy easystore is another option too. For SSDs, I prefer Intel SATA enterprise SSDs, or enterprise SAS-2 SSDs.
      Don't worry about Dell documentation that is outdated. Computer devices are built around technical standards.

    • @ArtofServer

      that is probably due to the method where the SBR is erased. for the card to work in the integrated slot, it has to retain the original PCI sub-system IDs for Dell and the "integrated" card. you can also change that after the fact once you have it flashed to IT mode firmware. yes I am setting this up with Plex . The r710 came with E.V. copy of win. ser. 16, do I run thought your step to clear it out? B y the way do you need bigger power supply if u fill-up all the ram slots

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  4 года назад

      you should get the bigger PSU anyway... RAM doesn't take that much power, but depends on how many DIMMs you are using. less DIMM modules== less power usually.
      i know nothing about win. ser. 16.

      The H200 with IT mode firmware is the best option to convert to HBA solution for the server model. Yes, for FreeNAS or other software storage solutions.

      PERC6/I is previous SAS-1 generation RAID card. H200 is a SAS-2 generation card that is mainly a HBA card, but with the "IR" firmware can have some RAID features. See my other video comparing HBA cards here: ruclips.net/video/hTbKzQZk21w/видео.html

      Yeah, I just replied to your email and sent you that video. For others reading the comments, the problem is due to missing drivers in CentOS8/RHEL8, and can be worked around as shown in this video: ruclips.net/video/4fOAuXiynYM/видео.html

      that's one of the benefits of going with a SAS-2 card like the H200, no more 2TB limit. if you'd like to know more about the 2TB limit, i made a video about it here: ruclips.net/video/u55vIGMzzKw/видео.html

    Great info. I just bought an r710 for my son who wants to run a game server. I only paid $28 at an auction but the original raid card doesn't seem to be working. Thinking of the LSI 9211-8i. I notice some people using cables that split into 4 as opposed to the cable you're using. Can you or anyone explain why that is? Thanks.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  Год назад

      I would recommend the H200 card I'm showing in this video instead of the 9211-8i so you can use the integrated slot.
      Not sure what other "split into 4" cable you referring to, but if you need to better understand SAS cables, watch my SAS cable guide here:

      @ArtofServer ....thanks for the quick reply. I watched your other video. The cable I'm talking about is the forward breakout cable. Trying to figure out if the LSI 9211-8i could use either cable.

    The main issue with the 200 is that it has a 2Tb drive limit, unlike the 310 and 710

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  2 года назад

      Nope, not true. A lot of people are confused about the 2TB limit issue, the H200 does not have that issue at all with IT mode firmware on it. Some of the older Dell firmware might have that issue. To understand the 2TB limit better, watch my video on that topic: ruclips.net/video/u55vIGMzzKw/видео.html

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 лет назад

      You need a SAS-2 controller of some sort. I can't tell if you're asking generally of specific to this R710 model? SAS controllers are able to talk to SATA storage devices as well, but stick with SAS-2 (6Gbps) or newer to avoid some compatibility issues. I don't know if you need a RAID controller or a IT mode HBA type of controller, but I have the later in my store; you can check them out here: www.ebay.com/str/theartofserver
