I have thought about this more. The workers told me that the mealworm castings deformed the fruit. Im not sure what other fertilizers (if any) or what nutrients are in the soil. Its highly probably that continually feeding ONLY meal worm castings WILL create a nutrient imbalance in the soil that may deform fruit. I encourage the use of mealworm castings, worm castings, as well as compost, rock dust in proper proportions.I have been using insect frass in small amounts with NO adverse effects.
Hey John, I actually raise mealworms for my reptiles and use the frass in my garden. It is super easy. You can also raise superworms and crickets for their frass.
I was just here about 45 minutes ago and this place is AWESOME! I will never go to Petco or Petsmart again for my reptile's food because all those places do is rip you off and sell you half dead malnourished live food. I got 200 LIVE healthy crickets for $4.50 and 15 blue horn worms for 8 bucks! Great quality at a good price!
I'd be super surprised if that changed the shape of the fruits. In order for that to happen one of two things must be true: either the additive changed the dna that determines shape, or the additive interferes with enzymes that determine shape. Both these outcomes are SUPER unlikely. It's vastly more likely that these fruit trees naturally produce mutants, OR something already in the soil is causing mutants. If it can be shown that the additive is the cause, I'd consider the additive harmful
I grow citrus trees as a hobby for 20 years in Ontario. I have both red wigglers and meal worms as that is all I use. Because mine tree's are organic I freeze my meal worm castings for 48 hours to make sure the eggs do not hatch out in my citrus containers as the worms will eat the roots.
Thanks for the great info John, I went to their web site to see if they would ship to NM and also to see how much it would cost. Well they do ship, but for one bag it would be $62.56 for shipping, so it would cost $67.56 just for one bag well I guess I won't be ordering any :( So you got a really good deal even If you had to pay the $5 per bag for it. Oh well, I will just have to stick with my composting worm casting. Or I could just order the mealworm and make my own like you said. :)
interesting option to consider... i do agree that u probably shouldn't add tons of the stuff into your mix as it is not normally in large quantity alone in most soils. Always look to nature for obvious answers. Nature would normally have all varieties of insect poo and not jst one type.
This is sSSSSooooooo amazing!!!! great to see Compton has a brighter side!! imagine if they could turn all those abandoned houses into gardens and urban farms! all they need to to is burn them down and go from there lol
Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens did you make an update video on this worm poop? If so can you add a link to this video's description or just let people know what you think about this fertilizer after using it. Thanks!
I've been thinking of raising my own mealworms because I have chickens and a bearded dragon and I want to use the castings in my garden. My wife isn't thrilled about the idea lol Has anyone reading this ever raised mealworms? Is it easy? What do they eat? Do they smell? Incidentally, it says that there are 38 other comments here but I cannot view any of them at this time - weird.
Dear John, Could you please warn us the next time you do a video that shows live worms? I was watching this episode while eating, and long story short, I'm not hungry anymore. Anyway, keep up the good work =)
Thank you John for showing us options on how to ORGANICALLY fertilize our backyard gardens. Here in my Wisconsin yard I worm farm in my basement. Perfect temperature during our long Winters and cool enough during our hot Summers. You are very inspirational.
I love my worm farm. My red wigglers are our pets, and my two year old daughter loves to play with them and feed them and blow kisses to them, but those larva in the video freak me out. I'll stick with my cute little wigglers.
I'm in LA and they aren't so far from me. CL has ads saying they are giving away free 40lb bags just because its end of summer and they need to clear the lot. Sounds like bait and switch from this video. They're a business so they probably want to make some money. Maybe if you bring some bags/containers of your own, they'll fill it with the busted bags that they would get rid of.
Another thing that you should add is WOOD ASH!! Go on here on RUclips and look up "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" Dr. Joel Wallach who is there is CA. will tell you why.
frass NPK value depends on diet of the mealworm. it ranges as so: N(2.1-3.5)-P(2.5-3.5)-K(2.5-4). Frass, depending on how long after the harvest date, has a some microbial activity that is more affect on plant parameters than the NPK value.
You've got to fertilize. You can do it with mineral fertilizer for immediate results. You can also do it with organics and wait a bit for the bacteria and fun-guys to break it down for plants. I do both. I apply the Mittleider weekly feed for some parts of my garden and add compost, etc. to build other parts up. With any fertilizer, organic or mineral, know how much you are adding and don't over do it.
I wonder why these castings would cause deformed fruit. If you over fertilize with other organics, nothing like this happens as far as my experience dictates. Thanks for the video John.
The reason no'one knew about the cheaper price listen on craigslist is because you were duped. Losers make fake advertizements all the time on craigslist. (kids at my old highschool put a fake listing for the principal's patio furniture on craigslist with her real number as a prank, it's not hard to do.) I have no idea why people do the things they do, but if you DO find an advertizement for a certain store on a site that has no affiliation with that store; then you might want to take a few minutes to visit the official page or call in and ask them directly. But what you DON'T want to do is keep talking like it's the store's fault that you were naiive.
I've been raising mealworms for about 6 months now for my fishing hobby. At $2.50 for 2 dozen, I'm saving a lot of money. I've been throwing the castings away, but I'll be keeping them now for our garden! Thanks for this video! :)
John, do you consume what you grow, or do you sell some of it? Do you can some of your food or freeze a large part of it? Just curious. Im looking into juicing which is why I initially started watching you so I have lots of questions and so far you've taught me a lot. Thanks so much!
wow john i wasnt aware you visited this place. i've been here last year and picked up about 6 bags for free. but when i used them, my beds really stunk and there were tons of worms that hatched. so they kinda ruined my bed for a while but im sure they added nutrients to my soil.
the castings I get from my mealwormfarm have a serious ammonia smell to them, so what you have there must be less concentrated, also containing undigested bedding/food. (wich ofcourse will compost later on)
Hey John...do you have any videos on starting seeds? I have a terrible time trying to get my seeds started and I'm tired of having to buy plants that I have no idea whether they are GMO free or not. Thanks.
Sounds like me with germination. From seed I have a terrible rate yet I can grow from cuttings and transplants very well. What soil makeup or build do you germinate in ?
Profound03 I was trying several things...but I found some really fine starter mix from a place semi-near me that is used to start tobacco seeds and used it this year along with some seed pods you can get from WallyWorld. Had a decent germination. I'm also starting to experiment with my own soil makeup. Gonna try that next spring. Thanks for your reply.

Compton isint even that bad. Go to chicago

west coast weather looks great
Great video John. keep them coming as you can. I just wish you could do some vidios for zone 5 and 6.
You're da bomb, as always :) Thank you for you generosity in sharing :)
If you create your own soil it would definitely be a great attitive. Adding secret organic particles that will be great for plants.
Amazing prices, too bad they only ship with FedEx.. two 5$ bags suddenly becomes 215$.
I've eaten fried mealworms in my entomology class. They taste similar to French fries.
i seriously need that recipe
- thanks for the good thought.
can I use this for cannabis?
to get worms i have to drive like hours away, but walmart around the corner sells live worms. is that the same thing?
Shakaama depends what kind of worms youre talking about
Do regular worm castings deform fruit? Is there any nutritional reasoning for the deformination?

They shpping the product to new york? Thank you
This is sSSSSooooooo amazing!!!! great to see Compton has a brighter side!! imagine if they could turn all those abandoned houses into gardens and urban farms!
all they need to to is burn them down and go from there lol
There no abandoned houses
The population is growing all the time. Lots of Mexican family are moving in. It not as bad as you think...
wow i breed mealworms and never thought of using that. i will need to start using it!! Great video thank you
Leaf cutter ants do not eat leaves, like you there farm and use the leaves to feed their fungus farms. They eat fungus
This place is literally about 3 minutes from my house. And I got the same stuff the other day.
What's the address?
I want you to take down this video. YOu're giving away my source of mealworm frass. lmao
Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens did you make an update video on this worm poop? If so can you add a link to this video's description or just let people know what you think about this fertilizer after using it. Thanks!
The folks at onfrass.com charge $28 for a 2 lb bag of frass. Nice markup.
only in CA!
Dont be scared.. lol Just handle business

Seems dirt cheap for good vermicompost
Dear John,
Could you please warn us the next time you do a video that shows live worms? I was watching this episode while eating, and long story short, I'm not hungry anymore. Anyway, keep up the good work =)
Wow 5 Bucks for 40 pounds is a steal!

I buy Amazon Biochar about 2 miles from there, you should check them out. It's an amazing product.

this is crazy john, im visiting from hawaii and im near the area. i was thinking of picking up a bag to throw on my mother in laws yard lol.

I don't live to far from here and I got mind for free the other day.
Great question. I guess the question would be whether or not they eat new plant growth or dead/decaying plant matter.
just went there today 4 bags 16 bucks
Howd it go? I just got some

2/26/2016 On the rainbow mealworm site, it is now $16.97 for 5 pounds, (free shipping)
How can you be sure you aren't adding eggs to the soil and then the Mealworms eat what you grow?
That's actually true. Castings are free until it's all gone. I guess they over stocked. Bring a pick up. 10-30-13
Today, I picked up 10 bags for FREE. However, I don't know how long they'll be offering it for free.
i live in long beach, and didnt know about this place 0.o
once again, you rule!
cheers
Very interesting John.. I'm going to look into mealworms. Thank you for sharing!
Anything to help Kooky Kook...
is this place has a buy minimum or you can buy any quantity?
so what if your fruits gets slightly misshapen?
Get your kaitin from your vacuum cleaner.
I hope not a problem...I put an entire bag into my raised bed, but I do have rock dust and compost mixed in the bed.
Howd it work out?
Wow im close to compton. Need to go there asap
is this worm casting good for roses too ?
the castings I get from my mealwormfarm have a serious ammonia smell to them, so what you have there must be less concentrated, also containing undigested bedding/food. (wich ofcourse will compost later on)
Ammonia smell suggests anaerobic bacteria are active in the stuff. That's usually considered bad.
Excellent video! Keep up the great work!!!!
How did these work? I just got some
How are the casting separated from the food, or, are they usually mixed together due to difficulty in separating?
They eat all the food. All you do is throw watermelons on top

I don't think of anything to do with guns when I think of The People's Republik of Kalifornia.

In California its legal. So you can get that almost anywhere. Hell just grow it yourself 🤣
