Hafa Adai John! Thank you for your recognition of Guam, because I am a local resident& student at UOG. I am a regular viewer of your vids & learned alot from your info provided. Currently reading your books that you recommended "Teaming with Microbes" & my mom as well is reading as well. You should come visit Guam one day, many heirloom plants & beautiful people to collaborate/trade with. We just had an Heirloom Symposium for our Marianna Island region, and resourced a permaculturist from Cali.

I recently attended a biological symposium on "symbiotic soil." They found that growing plants in specific soils (either native or non-native) changed their growth characteristics. These characteristics were correlated with symbiotic microbe populations within the soil. John is entirely correct that getting a quality symbiotic soil with the proper microbes is crucial to grow the best plants... however some plants may respond better to different sources better than others.

Agreed. With a lot of these new additives amendments it just comes off snakeoil-ish, even if it does help. Happens in every hobby and industry.
A good understanding of how biology and nature works is worth it's weight in gold. Permaculture gardening, like free wood chips and hugelkultur style beds aren't making retailers money with gadgets and gizmos, so there's little hype or information about them.

What is the best material to use?
Glacial sand and gravel that contain a myriad or heterogeneous combination of various rock formation type or mineralogy is preferred.
Other metamorphic or igneous stone such as basalt, rhyolites, etc., are highly recommended. Most sedimentary rocks (limestone and dolomite) are used to balance pH and provide for calcium and magnesium deficiencies.

My opinion only, John is a more advanced gardener, First you have to dig and rake your soil or make and fill raised beds. Then I would add peat, coir, or compost. Pick up a compost tea for fertilizer. Just get something growing. Next season, Id think Id be adding 1 or more of these products John recommends. Also make your own compost and youll have free worm castings.

  • @no2religions

Hair is made of a protein "Keratine". IF there is any amount of nitrogen in it it would only be made available via composting, so no point in adding it to the bed.
"Organic" in chemistry generally means molecules based on carbon. Minerals are just that, rocks and salts and such. The rock dust is THAT stuff. If our hair were so full of that stuff that adding a bit to a garden would make a difference then we obviously have enough minerals in our diets in order for it to be in the hair! :)

Another good video, but speaking of soil,John, what happens at the end of the season to the soil in your containers?
Is the soil in pots "depleted" at the end of the season, and what I have heard is that added fertilizer creates salt in the soil that will ruin it if used over and over. Will that happen with all fertilizers including organic, and is there any way to remove the salt if this is true?
Can you do a video about recycling container soil?

Heavy Metals are select minerals... Only when humans get involved and concentrate these minerals in unnatural amounts, ie: add lead to gas to prolong engine life, etc are there problems. Plants have had to deal with heavy metals (minerals) in nature since life on earth started. They have adapted to naturally occuring levels of these minerals in nature. The problem is when we concentrate them in large amounts. In my opinion, the amounts in Azomite are acceptable to me and are not an issue.

I prefer only 2things himalayan salt with its 80plus colloidal minerals in perfect balance with ideal ph and rabbits but i DONT use pellets. therefore beneath the cages is a mixture of plant bits like hay which has a white fungus growing on it. Just to feed one person gives a small property so much mulch you will have xtra. thwild weeds I collect fr the bits has roots up to 20 feet deep to pull up minerals. Fruit trees are now picture of health and pest free and soil is super. fluffy and rich.

If you make your compost from a variety of sources you should have a good spectrum of nutrients therefore not requiring additional inputs also adding unnecessarily will upset the balance in the soil. Stuffing the soil like is wasteful and leads to exosis, wilting in plants.

To find gravel-grinding operations in your area, call your local gravel pit (look in the Yellow Pages under "Cement-Wholesale", or "Sand and Gravel") and ask if they have crushed gravel screenings made from mixed rocks, the kind that comes out of river beds - crushed and passed through a 1/4 inch or finer screen.

Grey video John but what your viewers should know is a lot of those natural items you are promoting work very well but they take time to break down and have the microbes in the soil make them available for the plants so you're not going to see an immediate Improvement to your plants because of these materials. you should be applying these the season prior so they're available by next growing season just my tip

Maybe I just got lucky last year... I did nothing. I do not have raised beds. I had a 25x25 garden. I tilled the soil about 10 inches deep. I grew tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, squash, strawberries, and beans. All I did the entire summer was water with a soaker hose. I added nothing to my garden before I planted and nothing during the growing season. I am located in central Indiana. I thought I had poor soil and figured my garden would not do well but it did great.

Microbes just love the stuff! 95% of this stuff is not necessary in my opinion. Unless you have very poor soil, unlikely unless you have soil that's been farmed over the last 100 years. I understand this exciting to get into the chemical arrangement of your soil for optimum growing conditions, but nature has been producing this soil for billions of years and as long as you pay attention to your Ph conditions and your zone, your local soil should be just fine.

I notice some of the materials shipped in what appeared to be natural or heavy paper bags and some like the Wiggle Worm castings looked like plastic. Just buy the azomite locally at a good gardening store, and start a compost pile and a worm bed for free. After some time, you will be able to just brew the compost and worm castings together for an excellent tea, and if you have problems with insects, spray or feed your plants with 100% neem oil every week or so. These few things are relatively inexpensive and should lead to great results.

Hi John, I have been following your videos for gardening. Lots of sage advice! (no pun intended) I like that you use organics whenever possible. I watch another youtube channel, CupRockTV, and he has some great ideas on organic fertilizers, too. I am trying with great success: 1 lb. Kelp Meal, 1 lb. Cottonseed Meal, 1 lb. Fish Meal, and 2 lb. Bone Meal. To this mix I have added 1 lb. Bat Guano. I mix all together and incorporate at the base of plantings about every 2 weeks and water in.

I am trying to build my soil as well before I plant, so these are great documentations. I am studying & working at the UOG Agriculture dep. so I can practice sustainable living because I live on an island. We have more an agro forestry industry because of all the tropical trees, but a great variety of unique heirloom veggies too! Anyway much appreciation & respect again, keep pushing organic living!
