welcome to the trick side of stunt kiting. I too was left dumbstruck after seeing some of these guys fly. I now use these videos for reference when i practice.
im a kiteboarder, and deal with all types of kites on a daily basis...this is really pretty wild, its definitely opened my mind up to trying new things with my kites.
in the VERY very beginning, the move is called a pop-up to a fade. the definition of a pop up is when the kite is pointed away from you similar to the introduction of this vid, and you pull so the kite doesn't over rotate to a fade. but in this case, the pilot purposely gives slack to the pop-up so that the kite will rotate into a fade (kite on its back) hope that helps.
@phishingword not a stupid question. basically you still have control over the kite even if you have 4-20 wraps. just because the lines cross doesn't mean your automatically lose control. You still have tension in the string so that you are still able to turn. more wraps on the lines just makes it a little harder to turn as there is more friction preventing the lines to be push/pulled to turn.
In most belly up rotations the lines are carried around with the kite either over the trailing edges or over the nose in most belly down rotations the lines hang freely away from the kite. With pitch rotations the lines are allowed to roll up either side of the nose or tail of the kite this action is a bit like the way a Yo-Yo rolls up and down the string. All of thes movements can also be mixed together in different combinations and it this that gives the movements a complex looking 3D effect.
This is a film of 'tricky ricky' flying in Germany, I think. He is one of the best out there...see the Androgyn kite videos if you can find them. Great pilot.
of course the strings would get tangled, however that doesn't mean you will lose control. just because you have 1 or even 30 wraps around your line still allows you to fly the kite. the more wraps you have on your line, the harder it is to steer as there is more friction.
@gintacz I love it when people can't believe what is going on... You are an amazing kite flyer and I can only wish to have that amount of control some day. I can tell you for certain that this is real and the kite is real and the pilot is real. He is just better than most and it kinda blows your mind. 8-)
great work, I got my first stunt kite, tryin to do somthing other then boomerangs outdoors, just need some good wind. I'd love to learn how to make it flip like that, but I know I gotta learn to keep up in the air first. I didn't know this sport was so serious.
Yes dual line kites do use two lines to fly but it isn't too important if the strings wind up as there is still tension on each line. Using your arms as an analogy, if you cross your arms, your right hand is still your right hand, though you have added resistance in the middle where your arm is rubbing against your other. line is much thinner so basically your response is reduced with more wraps as you go. you can still fly the kite with the lines twisted. this isn't my video, just posted it
oh my god .... do i love kites ... and i do aprediate this vid with music ....im a beginner at kite flying and i would muchly value your wisdom and experience in the kite flying field, i await your response... an avid and beginner kite flyer
What Kite are you using Kozcan this can have a significant bearing on whether you can fly in light winds or not. Most good quality standard kites should go down to a fairly light wind although it may not be very easy to fly or trick. An ulrtalight or super ultralight might be the answer although these obviuosly need a certain amount of wind to fly properly. Technique also plays a big part and this will depend on your experience so the key is to find the right kite and practise a lot.
hey there just wanna say awesome flying, just read your blog about the lines crossing, I understand this concept as spin and then spinning the other way to untangle np. The thing is how do you get the kite to flip and you should do a learning vid or 2 ;)
It's not the kite really. Just about any quality kite by any number of makers can do these tricks. What is amazing is the pilot. Whoever it is is worldclass. Period
Man he can fly the heck out of that thing. This is a good example of learning till it is second nature look how smooth and flawless he pilots that stunt kite.
Oh this isn't my kite video. i'm posting it as there wasn't a genesis kite video on youtube. I own a genesis stunt kite, and this is my source of inspiration to see what this kite can do. credit is due to the kite flyer: Erich Vogl
Freestyle Pilot DVD by prism kites. great DVD you have a much better kite then any prismkite. But the dvd is well done. it will break every trick down for you. Mark Reed is a great flyer. And get your self around other kiters they are a great group of people. Good Luck and Smooth Winds Thomas
I totally don't understand how this kind of kite flight is accomplished. I don't see how there can be any lines attached since the kite appears able to rotate about any axis! How is it done?
This is a niche sport, meaning only a handful of people know how to really unlock the tricking potential of stunt kites. By all means, this is REAL. don't believe me? look at the other videos on the internet with "stunt kite and tricks" in the search bar. the reason why this video is amazing in particular is that the pilot consistently links tricks, bewildering the viewer. also check out gwtwkiteforums for more help on how to trick.
put some glow sticks or leds on here and do it at night at a rave to some dubstep music. that would be amazing. this has so much room for building on to. nice tricks man.
umm.. i have a question. If that kite has to strings (which im sure it does) would'nt the strings cross up and twist and wind up when you spin the kite?
from my experience, 2-7 mph would be tricking range, though it varies from pilot to pilot. Tricking is easiest to do when the winds are slower, allowing the kite to finish rotations. You can trick in higher winds, but your timing must be precise or else you might snap a spar.
@hughjass1019 credit goes to Erich Vogl, the kite flyer in this film. I just uploaded this so that more people can see the sport and how awesome trick flying can be (with practice that is)
Bought a stunt kite at the beach and flew it at the beach but i live where the wind does not and I was addicted the first time i got the kite up.... Needless to say I'm going through withdraws :(
HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?! I mean, okay, im a beginner, and I have a crappy-beginner-kite. I can do some loops, or land the kite, but not this stuff omg :D Anyone can tell me if this is possible with a "normal" kite?
@gintacz The number of other video's of kites doing the same thing (maybe not as well in all cases) on the left there would suggest you're wrong. Looks like you might have to go outside and see whats been going on in the 'real' world while you were sitting in front of your computer screen...
That is fake :)) the kite never leaves the camera area. Blank sky + computer generated kite. cause.... IMHO unreal movements (gravity + speed, etc) lol :) regards luke the puke :))
Wow! This is no less than robotic. I have seen a lot of pilots do some crazy things with kites, but the skill it takes to pull this off is amazing.
allways a pleasure to watch Erich
wow! i do a little bit of stunt kiting during my free time but no where near this quality of tricks :) great job

this guy can fly! totally attached to the kite and nature at the same time, SWEET!

Having just started in my journey to learn how to do tricks and stunts, I really love this video. It's amazing what you can do with stunt kites.
Absolut genial... Ich fliege erst seit wenigen Tagen und bin schwer begeistert von dieser Technik.

i wonder how many years it takes to get this good, i had no clue kites could do these things
How is this even possible? Amazing video!

Great Video! The Genesis is a super Trick Kite!
Great video and excellent flying *****
that is soo bloody good!!

truly badass... music is perfect too.
16 years later ... Wow ! geil
welcome to trick kiting. feel free to be amazed at what kites can do beyond just turning corners.
Really cool man!
Great video.

NICE EDITING!
just got my kite for xmas. amazing video how long did it take you to get to where you are now. any tips, tutorials you could recommend

Very cool!
Awesome video. I am new to doing kite tricks, just wondering how you prevent your lines from getting court on the tips of your kite?
AWSOME PILOTING!!!!!!!!!! whats the wind speed roughtly?
That's just amazing, never seen anything like that before !
Thumbs up :)
that was cool i know some of those tricks i havent flown my kite in a while i have a hypnotist (Mirage)
how long did it take you to master this skill? and which one did you start out on? What would you recommend for a beginner?
It's not the kite really. Just about any quality kite by any number of makers can do these tricks. What is amazing is the pilot. Whoever it is is worldclass. Period

Is this real then??? Holy crap!!! You should have been a fighter pilot.
I always dreamed of being able to do this, lol. Incredible.
how many lines is this?! that's insane!!!
I totally don't understand how this kind of kite flight is accomplished. I don't see how there can be any lines attached since the kite appears able to rotate about any axis! How is it done?
I cant believe what I was just watching, amazing stuff & I want to learn some of these trix !! awesome & thankyou :-)
bruh wtf, didnt even know this was possible
all i can say is amazing
if you make another can you show the guy so we could see how to do it please?
Top Notch flying effing brilliant.

that was great
DO A BARREL ROLL!
I used to have a stunt kite, i never knew they could do flips like that! i only thought thay could spin.. how on earth do you do that?

umm.. i have a question. If that kite has to strings (which im sure it does) would'nt the strings cross up and twist and wind up when you spin the kite?
Reminds me of a barn swallow. Very agile.
This cant be real. I work at a kite shop and have never seen this done, ever.
from my experience, 2-7 mph would be tricking range, though it varies from pilot to pilot. Tricking is easiest to do when the winds are slower, allowing the kite to finish rotations. You can trick in higher winds, but your timing must be precise or else you might snap a spar.
dude I cant even land mine
fyi this isn't my kite footage. i own a genesis and this is the video that i watch to seek inspiration!
@czechproud the strings are typically 80 feet with 150# strength.
sry but I could not find one thing? I guess it is pretty important. How long are strings in this case?
to nice dude :D
@YamasakiBJJ Have you never seen the Prism Freestyle Pilot video?
Now how the fark was he making it front flip and side flip without tangles
how do you get it to flip forwards and backwards like that>?
i can't get my stunt kite off the ground any sugestions?
wouldnt the strings get tangled ?
@hughjass1019 credit goes to Erich Vogl, the kite flyer in this film. I just uploaded this so that more people can see the sport and how awesome trick flying can be (with practice that is)
Wow that's Amazing!!
the single tip touchdown around 2:50 was jaw-dropping......
how can you make it flip like that?
your good
what is this MADNESS!??? am MIND FKED!
how is half of that even possible?
i bet his strings are well tangled!! lol

what kind of wind are these good to fly in. Im in kansas and usally when its windy its 15 25 mph
@Kukucs1958 Tja, Erich hat uns schon vor Jahren gezeigt, wo der Hammer hängt. Konnte viel von ihm lernen.
Bought a stunt kite at the beach and flew it at the beach but i live where the wind does not and I was addicted the first time i got the kite up.... Needless to say I'm going through withdraws :(
whats the song
i challenge you to aerial combat with my skywasp785!!!!
HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?! I mean, okay, im a beginner, and I have a crappy-beginner-kite. I can do some loops, or land the kite, but not this stuff omg :D Anyone can tell me if this is possible with a "normal" kite?
I thought I was good... Hahahah Damn. I bet you guys get a lot of dropped jaws.
lol, wow! I need more practice
U lie .....
Brilliant skill :) wonder when i can tell other this is standard stunt :)
ohh ok thanx
practice flying with shorter lines: 60 feet and low wind speeds 2-3 mph to get am understanding of your hand motions.
c2thew you'll need a smaller kite for wind speeds that low
How the fook do the lines now tangle ?
Mine looks like that when im crash landing......
it looks fake almost
@gintacz The number of other video's of kites doing the same thing (maybe not as well in all cases) on the left there would suggest you're wrong.
Looks like you might have to go outside and see whats been going on in the 'real' world while you were sitting in front of your computer screen...
2 string
That is fake :)) the kite never leaves the camera area. Blank sky + computer generated kite. cause.... IMHO unreal movements (gravity + speed, etc) lol :) regards luke the puke :))
cgi...
Kites are dumb lol
