Great to see Keegan on an episode! He is already quite an accomplished young man. He's finishing his first year at UND studying commercial aviation (I believe), is already a licensed private pilot, was in charge of the 100%+ Cri Cri build at FT '15, is a musician and a really nice guy!
Although a little more complicated, I find the four line kites much easier to fly. They're easier because they launch easier, even if it's upside down you can get it in the air.
I just got a beginner kite, the Prism jazz sport kite. You don't realize just how addicting this is until you get some good winds. It is such a blast. The Prism kites can take a direct crash into granite at 60 mph and be just fine. I've crashed it straight down into rocks and it didn't even scratch it. The point is, start with a less expensive ( although very nice) beginner sport kite to learn how to fly and so you don't damage a more expensive kite. I've only been flying mine a couple weeks and I am ready to graduate to one of these foil kites.
I have the Prism Snapshot in 1.2m and 2.5m spans and an old 2m framed-kite. The framed-kite is super fast and maneuverable but a bit more work to get set up, launch solo and doesn't pack down as small as the foil kites. But for all out power and ease of use, the foil kites are the way to go. Also, as someone below me mentioned... try kite-buggying!
Wow.....just wow, i've had a flexifoil sky-tiger for about 10 years, she's my baby and i fly her when i can. She's a high-aspect-ratio wing, FOUR string, which means she has brakes :-) 30sq-ft....she drags me down the beach and i love it. So pleased you've coverd kiting :-) Oh yeah....i can dive her at the ground, pull the brakes and she will stop mid-air...then gently start to raise. I also don't need to go to the outer eqinox to land her, pull both brakes evenly and just "flutter" straight down. Para-gliding is my next step :-)
great idea... I used to fly stunt kites, only did the air foils once but you're right they do pack up nice and small... I had a few smaller to mid sized stunt kites with spars... I love the ripping sound they make... I'll have to pull mine out and go flying again...
Just bought 4 Prisms from REI today! Big sale day for their anniversary. Got a small and a large single liner and 2 of those stunt kites :) The 140 and the 170! Looks like a 8 knot wind off Lake Washington tomorrow. I really hope it’s a good day to go fly!
Excellent alternative for when the wind isn't playing nice for flying. I'd love to see a sports kite fitted with a camera. Not FPV just the more traditional kite camera rig. They have the power certainly and though not as stable as a traditional lifting kite, could give great video or stills.
You inspired me. I dug out a little two-line stunt kite I’ve had for almost 35yrs. New string and its back in the air after sitting in a box for almost 30 years!!! Oh yeah, I ordered a 2.5meter parafoil that came in today! Should be fun when it’s too windy for the Mavic Air. Still need to try a fixed wing.
Our RC club had a "Farewell Snowbird Members" picnic last weekend, and the winds were too much for all but the most daring of flyers (only plane I saw getting flown was a wing), but I had my Revolution EXP in the car, and had some nice flying time with it. Still building proficiency on the quad line, but it's a kick.
This reminds me of the fun I had over 10 years ago! A friend of mine took me to a kite spot (just a big meadow in the middle of Bavaria) and I've got fixed on the power these kites develop just by harnessing the wind. I bought a PowerKites Beamer 3 (3.0 m²) and pulled the crap out of it up to 6 bft! And I've done some stupid sh*t like kiting large snowkites (North Husky LTD 9,3) at 5 bft gusting up to 7 bft - the result was the fastest 25 meter run of my life, followed by dirty clothes and a muscle fiber rupture in my left triceps... :-p
I remember back in the 80's we bought these kites called 'Skynosaurs" also with two strings and you could control them, and they had these long tails like the ones used in dogfighting, they were awesome like these ones on the episode, great one, by the way! Cheers!
I love wind !! I know you have done a sloap soaring episodes . But one major version of slope soaring that you havnt coverd and is grossly under known about is dynamic soaring please show the world thae craziest most brutal version of rc flight !
I was thinking about getting one of these. As a beginner, I was thinking that the larger kites are easier because they can capture more wind and would be easier to get up?
If I wanted to eventually get into kiteboarding (water or snow), would a dual line kite like that be worth getting for learning the kite initially when starting with zero experience?
You’d be much better off with a quad line foil kits. The bottom pair give you brakes and the ability to completely stall the kite. This can be necessary for safety. Make sure you equip them with kite killers too. I use mine for kite boarding with rollerblades and a skateboard. I run anything from 1.5 sq metres to a 10 sq. Metre sepending on wind conditions. Have fun!
I remember my uncle Kurt flying a Prism from Klig's Kites at Myrtle Beach state park about 15 years ago. He handed me the strings and I almost got pulled into the sky!
Awesome seeing you guys demoing these! My first 2-string was the Hotdog kite from Into The Wind. A really really good starter kite. The delta style stunt trick kites are also super fun!
It's so funny you just posted this, I was just out yesterday flying my kite. I have a couple that I keep in my car for days that it's too windy to fly my drone. But I have got some cool Drone footage of my friend flying the Kite and me zipping around with the Drone
i have a symphony 1.8, absolutely love it, it has been all over the world with me, england, france, spain, australia and new zealand. Would highly recomend buying one
I've been flying stunt kites since the 80's. Great fun. You need to try the wings too because you can land them and take off again. They are much more elegant than the parafoil types. Someday you'll read the question I sent months ago asking you when you'll put an electric motor on a delta or wing type stunt kite. It's a project I've been pondering but I don't know how I'll steer the thing.
I wish you had a complete beginner's guide to getting into stunt kites they look cool that is something I would like to try. Now I need to find information about all of it
You will remind many of their kiting days and hopefully inspire some to get out and try it.......a long time ago now but I flew everything...single line, Indian fighters, stunt and quads, power....all amazing fun :)
I was given one as a kid, this guy was in the park flying a huge one, and he told me he had a beginners kite. He taught me with that one, and told me to practice for a few days, and he told me he would be back to get it later in the week. I showed up every day, for like a month, and he never showed. A few months later he drove by and waved, since he didn't stop to get it back, I knew it was mine lol
