Always appreciate alternatives to "new & improved". Especially for folks just starting out and for those on limited budgets. Then, there's a whole group of people who just plain enjoy being creative. Those who would rather use their hands for something besides opening their wallet. There's something special about a hand carved spoon that can't be duplicated with an expensive store bought version! Thanks for sharing.
I really like to see more people truly making more of there own gear and not buying it from the cottage industries, not that it's all bad but I fear the whole concept of bushcraft has gotten away from many . Great kit sir you are a inspiration to diy'ers and those on fixed incomes and or beginners into bushcraft.
Brilliant! This is pretty much how I started out as a kid, mostly just things I'd scrounged, repurposed or ''liberated''. It's a good way to start as you're often going to have to ''think on your feet'' when you're out in the wilderness. Great stuff!
I've got to admit at the beginning of watching this video i first thought OMG you gotta be kidding me? I spotted a few mistakes you had made, and i would have done things much differently, However the more i watched the more i was changed in my opinion, you are out there doing it, no expensive kit, improvised, adapted and overcame and i am an ex Royal Marine and i take my hat off to you!! You show that you dont need all the fancy gear or the expensive items to actually get out there and do it!! You made shelter, fire and was able to cook a hot meal the basics of survival. Well done good effort!!
Your still doing a great job after all these years. Found your video on your other book, would love to see a video on this book, trying to compare matte with gloss. I think gloss would be better for full color picture book? Keep your books coming out, I love it! Want to get them all!
Great stuff!! I really appreciate how your mind works. You have an awesome approach that's meaningful to the common man and the environment as well. We here in Michigan look forward to more great ideas and demos.
nice video mate! lots of use for old stuff. this is part if the comon man thinking: discount bushcraft /inexpensive bushcraft. i like that a lot! thubs up and greetings from cologne, germany arthur
Do you suppose one could season a tin cup, tuna tin cup and cook ware made from dog food cans like you would cast iron? If you were using them to cook or boil with.
Great honest vid as always Malc, but your tarp set up was just way to high ! Keep it lower and use more for ground cover/ insulation , thats more important than being water tight! Just a tip from a old ex british army vet! Best wishes mate
+johnjayrambo11111 Bushcraft and Survival ...yeah I just recently got a 2x2 waterproof nylon tarp all black for stealth camping wether in wilderness or urban settings so im cheking out different vids on what could i make with it i do also have a 12ft x12 ft but its bright orange not really for stealth camping...anyway yeah thanks for the tip i ll try this set up with my black one see if it works with the size i got ...
+johnjayrambo11111 Bushcraft and Survival thank you man it did nicely i tried both set ups the one in this vid and the second part i used the orange tarp as the floor and instead of the blanket i put my sleeping bag inside of it ,very comphy set up .. as a thank you id like to pass a little of my knowledge to you bro ... you know microwaveable rice is cool for camping trips but for survival situations you want to take regular rice (you get more quantity in the same amount of space) plus a lot of people will take beans to cook with the rice but beans you have to presoak before cooking and it still takes a lot of time untill they are ready .so i usually take a bag of rice and lentils and a kit with herbs and spices (lentils are from the same bean family more protein less fats in comparison) ... basically you cook the lentils first and when you see they start splitting and are smushy drop the rice in (try it at home ) i dont know how long it will take to cook on the buddy burner but on a camp fire or a good bed of coals it usually takes about 1 hour to 1 1/2 depending on the amount ( and you dont have to make any presoaking preperations as you would for the beans ) ..the rest (spices herbs ) you use whatever you like and of course you can improvise like add meats potatoes to the lentils while they are cooking so on and so forth your finished product should be a nice hearty stew (especially good for cold rainy weathers in the wilderness ) .. take care bro, maybe well see you make a vid with this recipe lol
id think twice about using the cans from caned food as cups and pans because of the bpa and styrene in some can liners, it would be like dosing yourself with cancer everytime you made instant coffee in it.
I NOW HAVE A BOOK ABOUT REPURPOSED GEAR ON AMAZON AVAILABLE AS AN EBOOK OR IN PAPERBACK: goo.gl/zAY6HC

id think twice about using the cans from caned food as cups and pans because of the bpa and styrene in some can liners, it would be like dosing yourself with cancer everytime you made instant coffee in it.
cheers joan , funny enough i recently uploaded another video about burning the cans in a fire to burn off any residues or liners
I like to see one make do with what they have and use it rather than buy all new stuff just to look good on a vid.
cheers mate, much appreciated
