RE-VISITED! The Llandudno Transport Festival 2023 (cars, lorries, vans etc)

  • We'd not been to the Llandudno Transport Festival for nearly 20 years so another visit to North Wales's largest transport festival in 2023 was long overdue.
In about 1990/1991 I entered our Austin A40 to the event when the vehicles were displayed in the centre of Llandudno itself, alongside the Victorian Extravaganza which takes place over the same long weekend. Some years ago the transport element moved out of the town centre to fields just up the road, and is now linked to the town centre's Victorian goings-on by an assortment of classic buses and coaches. This year we just attended for the day as paying visitors, keen to re-acquaint ourselves with this well-known show. In all this amazing event runs for three days over a bank holiday weekend.
In this video of the Llandudno Transport Festival 2023 (apologies for any mispronunciations!), I take a walk around the classic lorries, PSVs (coaches/buses) and of course the many classic cars that were on show. Is your vehicle shown?
Overall highlights this year include the sight of multiple Duple-bodied Bedford OB coaches, a re-commissioned Citroen Rosalie that had been sitting in a local garage since the early 1960s, an Austin K8 van, a VERY oily-rag Bedford QL from WW2, a very useful Hillman Super Minx estate, a low-mileage Austin Metro 310 van, a rare Standard Pennant (replacement for the 10), and a Singer Gazelle convertible.
If you've not been to this large gathering we'd highly recommend it, all being well we'll be back to the Llandudno Transport Festival again soon.
If you're new to the channel, then a big Hello! There are lots of show visit videos on the Old Classic Car channel now so please take a look around. If your favourite classic cars feature in this upload, please pop a note in the comments and tell us more.

I have to look no further having seen the Granada estate 2.8 as my take home car.
So comfortable when cruising, a great load lugger, and can be used as emergency accommodation by folding down the back the size of a double bed.
Mine was 1985, two tone in black and royal Claret,
The metric tyres are extremely expensive, that's if you can find them.
Mine went to a Granada fanatic in Bournemouth after a 10 Yr ownership.
I love all the quirky information about various things you tell us Richard, thank you once again for another enjoyable video. Correction, I'll take home as well the MK 1 Singer Gazelle convertible with the 1500cc O.H.C. engine, same as the Singer Hunter. As I'm on a roll 3rd will have to be the cute yellow and white Metropolitan.

Blimey Rick , what a huge treat, such knowledgeable narration , especially picking out the real rarities. The ' 57 London registered Singer Gazelle convertible , try finding another one that early ? !.Also the incredible Citroen ' 33 Big 12 in such amazing original condition , wonderful style and detailing, the clever bolt-on boot with split tool compartment and spacious luggage area , so French and rare on an equivalent British car .We could learn a lot from enthusiasts in the North West area on how to put on a show of everything !.

Well done Rick another great video. Seeing all the AEC’s reminded me I had An AEC Mandator Tractor unit converted to a Recovery truck back in the early 80’s. I had to remove the ballast due to a change in driving licence rules and it destroyed the beautiful driving quality of the truck. However we used it for a few years driving on trade plates for car and light commercial recovery.

WOW, the Citroen Big 12 Rosalie ! My dad had one - a 1936 version - EWL 730, and I still have that Brass 'Floating Power' Plaque from the boot - hanging on my wall as I write. I also have a Hub Cap from it too. Many happy trips out in it as a boy, but sadly the 'Ten Year Test' as it was then, put paid to it and it went to that big scrap yard in the sky. What a great show and some brilliant footage from you, as always. Thanks for all your work in compiling this video. I can't believe the Citroen though - I'd love to get to seee it one day. Take care 🙂

You guys across the pond have some of the coolest compact cars and minivan's with 4 cylinder engines. We didn't wise up until the 70's and 80's and In the 60's what we considered compact were 6 cylinder Ford Falcons, Plymouth Valiants,Dodge Lancers(later Dodge Darts,Pontiac Lemans,or Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevy Nova and rear engine Corvair.Only Pontiac and Chevrolet offered a 4 cylinder. I am really enjoying this video and it's giving me the itch for another sports car, maybe an AH Spriteor MG Midget, I've always wanted one.Love the Freighters and Buses too!! Greetings from the USA!!! You really get some very large turnouts of vehicles and people. There are so many fantastic vehicles at the show, it's impossible for me to choose just one???!!?

    • @oldclassiccarUK

I guess cheap petrol and big cross-country distances led to V8s being the norm in the US whereas here in the UK at least, V8s were the preserve of upmarket/luxury/GT cars in the main. Plus in the early 1950s Britain still had a lot of rationing so fuel-efficient cars were very welcome.

Thanks for this video, Richard. I must say that I've never seen so many vintage heavy trucks in one place. And in such great condition! I don't know why, but I'm amazed that owners have the space and parts resources to work on such behemoths in the land of sheds. I'm assuming many have businesses with the room to work on and store them? Twenty odd years ago I had the pleasure of traveling the UK and European roads for the company I worked for. @31:44 : That's a Bristol SC4LK with an Eastern Coach Works coach body. That front grille was used for the coach-bodied versions, as opposed to the three-panel grilles on the bus-bodied ones.
The other way you can tell it's a coach is from the old Crosville fleet number.
Between the early 60s and the mid 80s, Crosville's fleet numbering system was very informative. The three letters each represented an aspect of the vehicle.
The first letter showed whether it was a single-deck coach, or a bus, or a 'dual-purpose' vehicle which could be used for both purposes. 'C' meant 'coach', 'S' meant 'bus, and 'E' meant 'dual-purpose'.
(Double-deckers all had 'D', obviously enough)
The second letter showed which model it was. In this instance, 'S' stood for 'SC4LK'. The later Bristol RE's for instance had 'R', the LHs had 'L', and so on.
The third letter denoted the manufacturer of the engine. Despite the vast majority of Crosville's vehicles at this time being Bristol chassis, the engines in most of them were Gardiner as they were tougher. 'B' stood for 'Bristol', 'G' for ' Gardiner', 'L' for 'Leyland', etc.
So what you see here can be read from the fleet number 'CSG': 'C' = coach, 'S' = SC4LK and 'G' = Gardiner engine. By comparison, if it had been bus-bodied, it would have been 'SSG'
I love watching your vids, especially the collections of photos. They tend to show the cars which were around when I were a lad (early/mid 60s - late 70s), so I can have a good wallow!
