    Arlington looks very nice, great to see dense housing by stations! And great to see a collab with Thom on your channel! The picture at 4:15 is West Side Yard in NYC, and those are LIRR M7s! The history of West Side Yard as a yard date back to 1851 when the Hudson River Railroad built the yard as a depot for a line running down Eleventh Avenue, as trains were not permitted to operate south of West 32nd. New York Central and later Penn Central expanded the rail yards and used them as a freight terminal up until the 1970s when Penn Central declared bankruptcy. The state acquired the yard and the northern portion of it became the Javits Center while the southern portion became West Side Yard!

    I was living near the Braddock Road metro station (the southern terminus of Metroway) when Metroway was built. It was useful for getting to the Potomac Yards shopping center before there was a Metro stop there. Now that the new metro stop exists, Metroway seems duplicative of the Blue/Yellow line.

    I guess the metro way was created to mainly connect the rapidly developing Potomac yard neighborhood and shopping center to the metro at Crystal City or Braddock road
    The new Potomac yard station took away most of metroway's ridership as seen in the stats

    I'm not a fan of BRT thatlooks like light rail as if you invest so much invest in light rail.
    That said a BRT style system without the 'style' can be great.
    I'm from Barcelona, a city with an extensive transit network with metro,trams, suburban/regional trains, funiculars an buses. I have 2 major metro lines near me and I use to use mostly those but in 2011 they started creating a new grid bus network that includes 17 vertical lines, 8 horizontal lines and 3 diagonal lines with easy and well signed changing points. Buses run every 5-8 minute most of the day (some lines stay around 5) they use mostly bus lanes, but basic ones shared with other buses and taxis and they use basic bus stations (with a small shelter and bench but this isnthe standard for regular stops, unless not possible) with an integrated next bus sign, line maps and network map. At changing stops there are clear direction to the other stops, that were moved when necessary to be closer to each other.
    You validate on the bus and can entr from both the front and middle door (small nuses have 3 doors, articulates ones 4 and bi-articulated 5).
    Those buses replaced some of the regular buses somthentotal number of lines remained the same. This seems basic but it's great to the point I mostly use buses now as they are easy to use, gets you anywhere withoutbtoo much planing. Thencost was just a few millions Euro (budget was 4.5m but ended up a bit more).
    Buses are great and the best thing about themmis thatvthey don't need much to run a good service which is why I think i vestengs doble and triple digits for a bus line is, in most cases, not a great idea.

    • @oscardaone
      @oscardaone 4 месяца назад

      I live in DC, and yeah, I prefer the light rail, however the tram hasn’t gotten too much traction unfortunately in DC where the old streetcar was the primary source of transportation until cars became a thing. Nowadays the modern streetcar is under another local agency DDot. Unfortunately WMata in this case recently responded to my comment and have no plans for light rail system.

    • @sammymarrco47
      @sammymarrco47  4 месяца назад

      yup when many many ppl use transit it lets u run great things like u have in Barcelona, however even before covid the DC area's mode share to work by transit was 16% and Barcelona was 37% that's 2.3 times more. When its a service that isn't just "for the poors" it can be solid. Also the cost of a redesign like that would almost certainly be in the 100s of millions of dollars here. Thanks for the info, quiero visitar Espana en el futuro!!

    • @AL5520
      @AL5520 4 месяца назад

      @@sammymarrco47 I know the problems you have in the US but, in the end, more peoplenuse transit here because it's reliable and frequent. I gave this example because it's not fancy, comlicates or extremely expenive. The system was planned but implementation was in small stages during almos 10 years. I know what many Americans think of buses but if you start to build a good and frequent system people will start to use it.
      In Spain we manage to build things because we keep it basic. The metro here is great but no fancyn design or huge stations, it's simple and basic but works. You tend to overbuild things instead of keeping it simple. On rail travel videos they always complain about the main station in Barcelon because it's from the 70's and looks like an airport but it's well maintained, has everything you eed and works well, which is what's important.

    The idea and infrastructure are done amazingly on Metroway, but the execution makes it fall flat. For one, the buses are exactly like every other Metrobus on the inside. I'd imagine you noticed this when you noticed the fact that the buses were quite loud, louder than WMATA's newer buses (which also feature interior screens, nicer seats, and USB ports, not found on Metroway). Secondly, the signal priority is quite terrible for a BRT. Supposedly it extends green lights for buses, but I still frequently see Metroway buses stuck at red lights in the bus lane, making it not that much better than driving. Also the span of service is really bad, with service stopping at just 10 pm on weekdays. With those downsides people don't have any real reason to take Metroway over Metrorail or driving, especially with the recently opened Potomac Yard station, leading to the abysmal ridership we see today. Great video

    • @sammymarrco47

      that was also my experience, rideOn was free for awhile during covid and ive heard sometimes their fireboxes are broken. Also some people see others not pay and think "why should I have to pay."
      Finally there are people so low income that they can't really afford to pay (crazy, i know ).
      Interestingly when I was on septa trolleys near Philly in November pretty much everyone paid, even though there were definitely some transit dependent and therefore most likely low income people there.
