- The Hukilau Festival is an annual celebration of tiki culture held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It features live entertainment, including surf and exotica bands, cocktail seminars, and a marketplace with tiki art and vintage collectibles. The event attracts enthusiasts of mid-century modern aesthetics and tiki lifestyle, offering a variety of activities such as mixology demonstrations, art shows, and appearances by notable figures in the tiki community. But the most notable feature of the event is the cacophony of tiki cocktails that are showered down upon festival attendees.
The recipe of the weekend (for me, anyway) was Ma's Wakeup Call. In this video, I show you how to make it... kinda.
Thanks to Devon from Bar Tiki for the recipe.

To make the cocktail in this video:
2 oz Don Q Gold
1 1/2 oz Banana Real
1 oz Coco Real
1 oz Lemon Juice
3/4 oz Dry Curacao
3/4 oz Ma's Simple (you'll have to figure this out yourself)
Dash Chocolate Bitters
1/4 tsp xanthan gum
Blend on high with ice. Pour into a stemmed glass.
Garnish with an edible orchid.

I can vouch for best way to use Coco Lopez is before opening run hot water over the can for a couple of minutes until you can shake the can and hear the liquid sloshing around. Open and any remaining solids stir until broken up. Then pour into a squeeze bottle and keep in fridge. Works great every time.
PAN-DAN is a plant that grows in Asian countries, and has a nutty-vanilla flavor.
Latitude 29 in New Orleans makes a great pandan painkiller 👍
4:26 I have it on good authority that you smell like cookies.
Don't forget to like the video ❤
Glad the taste is great because it doesn't look good. Looks like it split.
aloha Hukilau peeps
Ma’s wake up call was the standout cocktail for me. Simply incredible.
Mahalo, ohana!!
'Nuther good show, Spike! Very well done overview of the Hukilau, and a nice drink segment. My wife Teri wanted to let you know she's seen Thai basil at Tokyo Central (Harbor and Baker). We love that Cloud Forest drink too!
omg why is this intro hard panned left im ded 😭
Love 🥰the Messer Chups 😳next to you 💥💕😬
That’s one delicious looking drink kind sir and I can’t wait to see the recording of your’s and Ed’s live show at the Hukilau! That whole event definitely looked like an adventure in its own right.
I have some catching up to do on watching your Breezway videos Spike. This was a good one to start with. Intriging ingredients inn that Cocktail, and from your reaction, its certainly one to try. Perhaps if things calm down next year, one can make the trip to the Hukilau from across the pond.
Fantastic episode! Need to try this drink
So glad to see the first video from the Hukilau! Sadly, I missed this drink when I was there. But, BarTiki is close to us so, I'm going to have to see if they will make this for me.
Love the Hukilau recap! Cocktail looks awesome ❤
It was a delicious drink!
Just to tag along with all of the comments about softening the coco lopez. I had found at a bar i used to manage that running it, unopened, through the restaurants dishwasher would do the trick. In less than 30 seconds you have liquified lopez.
That's a fantastic drink. One of my favorites from The Hukilau this year!
When was it served ? I think I missed this one.
@@Flowerqt18 Poolside on Sunday during brunch, right before Spike's Breezeway with Ed.
Hukilau looks like a lot of Tiki fun!!
Great video, Spike. Thank you for making and sharing! Btw, where can one purchase the hat you’re wearing throughout? Would love to pick one up. Thanks!
Coco Lopez!!! YES! I am an old school fine dining bartender heavy on the Vino caro and Mediterranean beer side but I love me some Coco Lopez for A LOT OF THINGS!!!
Pepe Lopez is cream of coconut not cream of coconut.
That was cool. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
You really need to mix up the coco lopez. It will flow much better.
Get a Vitamix...
Really looking forward to this one!
Uh. Hmm.
I knew a bartender in Freeport, Bahamas at the Pusser's Store. He kept a can of Coco Lopez over a candle flame to keep it liquid. He made me a Pusser's #4 Painkiller by putting pebble ice in an enammeled Brand cup and shaking spices over the ice, then he poured the coconut wax over the ice, encapsulating the spices. Then the Pineapple/Orange juice and 4 oz of Navy rum.
The drink was stirred not shaken or blended. When you got to the bottom, you could crunch the ice and get the sweet spices. Tasty. I collected three 1 pint ''Royal Navy'' enamelled mugs that night.
whoa 666 views !! what does that even mean?
😂
Wish I could've come out there.
