  • Join me for another easy water/alcohol mixture magazine distressing technique using embossing folder combinations, trying different tones of magazine images and quick fixes for touch ups. I also demonstrate finishing off the images with a deckle edge. As my ideas progressed I decided I didn’t like the blacks or darks and chose more medium tones. In the end I decided I liked the mosaic effect combined with the most graphic images that allowed for a lot of contrast. I also liked combining embossing folders to get a dual distress effect that adds more interest.
    What you’ll need:
Sizzix die cutting/embossing machine or another brand.
    Magazine images
    Bases
    50/50 water rubbing alcohol mixture
    Soft cloth
    Glue
    Scissors or tear ruler
After choosing and gluing my focal image to my base I begin by randomly placing and gluing torn strips of magazine images to enhance the focal image. After completely dry I emboss the image and spray lightly with my alcohol water mixture.
With my soft cloth I begin rubbing the raised areas of the image to distress the paper. After about three sprays the ink will lift easily. Different magazines and ink react differently to the mixture so it requires experimenting to see which work best. There is not enough contrast to get the full effect with light colors.
When I feel I’ve distressed all I can I correct any defects with DIY washi or filling in the torn area with ink. I finish off with a border and brushing a thin coat of glue over the entire image to ensure no loose edges.
Use this fun technique for making cards or any mixed media project. The final images will require some book weights to make them flat, apply a suitable paper to the back for writing if you don’t care to leave it embossed. More tips in the video tutorial.
    Happy paper crafting!

Love 💕 your work. I too have been exploring how to create art work with magazines and packaging. So many beautiful colors and images. Seems a shame to not try to shape them into new artwork. Thank you for sharing your explorations with us.
