Making a layout bleed-ready

  • In this tutorial, I show you how to adjust a layout and make sure it's optimised for bleed and safe-area. If you haven't watched my Bleed Basics video already, that's probably a good place to start before this tutorial.
Here's an outline of the process:
    1. Go to the layout editor and turn on bleed preview (3mm) and safe area preview (3mm). Note if you want to export for the Game Crafter try 3.175mm of bleed.
    2. Bleed: Adjust/expand any card elements outwards to make sure they extend into the bleed area so your card will still look good if the printing is a bit off.
    3. Safe area: Adjust any element inwards so you won't miss important icons if the printing is a bit off. (Personally, I wouldn't worry about anything inside a 2mm safe area, but it is technically a risk you take).
    4. When you go to export (for either pdf or png) turn ON the 3mm of bleed on the dextrous export page. If I'm just printing cards at home, I'll leave bleed off so that I can cut out my cards with a single cut (since their edges touch), but because I've optimised the layout for bleed, it's now ready for printing with bleed as well. Best of both worlds.
    Happy designing!

Hi there! I've been using Dextrous for few hours now and I've encounter a bug or sort.
When I try to export to PDF, the some small size text are misalign and hitting the boarder that I made.
It looks fine on preview but when export as PDF, the misalign happens. And if I try to export as PNG, the border becomes thin and shrunken in size, overlapping inside the text box.
Please do respond if you can.
