Gosh, I had assumed that one would need a very small amount of powder to colour the base. I now know why what I was doing wasn't working. I was dissolving the pigment in a little water and then adding it to a white base but it was hardly making a dent in the white. That's because I was obviously not using enough powder there. That's a bit disappointing because I thought the small packs of pigment I bought were going to last me some time. It seems they won't!
One of the things you can do is add a small nut to act like a ball in a paint can. this will lesson the time you use shaking the bottle as it will halp in the mixing of the material..
Thank you for making this video it was very informative and I'm going to make my own paint and because of your video I will be able to do it with confidence thank you
Excellent demonstration. Just in time for me as I am just starting on a little project incorporating the use of mica. Question that I hope you’ll be able to answer; how stable is acrylic paint on top of mica? Thanks so much for sharing your experience and skills.
So helpful, thanks. I've got so many tubs of mica - left over from resin projects, I need to think of a way to use them up with my wooden plaques / sighs. Thanks x
Aw,… Thanks for the comment but each time I look at the drawers of unused mica and glitter-my heart sinks. I spent so much money on it so-it’s sad to see it not being used x
I was warned to wear a good mask when using mica powder. I noticed you cleared your throat a few times. You don’t want to breathe mica powder because it stays indefinitely in your lungs. Just a suggestion. To anyone that uses these powders . They are dangerous without a mask
I bought mica powder one time in error not pay attention thinking it was embossing powder. Now I have had it for awhile and found can mix in paint and such. Glad I found this video. I mainly make journals, but love all crafts. New subbie here, would love to be crafty RUclips friends! Tfs
Where I live Mica powder is too expensive to do this!! For me, unfortunately, it's far cheaper to buy the colour I want, or mix colours together to make what I need. Thank you so much as you answered a few questions for me!! I like your channel!
Hey there! I was just wondering how you feel about that Sax medium vs other brands. I've seen their products on Amazon but was a bit shy about trying them. Thanks!
I was thinking I might sprinkle some powder directly on the painting. If sprinkled on a clear glue type backing do you think the powder would stay put when varnishing?
Thank you, this was really helpful and clear. Much appreciated. I've been mixing cosmetic grade mica powder with white pearlescent (sp? sorry, not a native speaker) acrylic paint, but the texture gets very grainy with the powder to paint ratio needed to achieve the color; it tends to go on uneven, with tiny chunks, no matter how well I mix. I don't think we have acrylic gel in my country, at least not that I've seen. Any advice?
@@starlapercle9575 I'm not from the States, but regardless I ended up finding acrylic gel where I live. The graininess (sp) is still an issue for me, but the finer powders work well enough. Apparently particle size is way more important than I realized. Thanks
Im confused. I'm looking for a cheaper way to replace small bottles of acrylic paint. This mixture seems to use quite a bit of powder for a very small amount of paint. The number one color I will need is white. Can one make white acrylic??? And how much a does the mica colors cost and what is the largest amount one can buy in each color?
I researched about mixing mica powder to student grade acrylic paint to hopefully make colors more vibrant, but found no info on it....anywhere!! Maybe it can't be done...or may have to try it anyway! What are your thoughts on that? Thank you for your time!
This is for acrylic paint. It wouldn't work in dye very well, because the mica powder itself won't stick to the fabric. The medium I used is an acrylic paint medium, which contains a type of glue that keeps the powder on the paper.
Omg what a waste of alot of mica powder! They aren't cheap, I'd rather use paint or mix a small amount of mica to my paint if I want a shimmer. Buying a metalic paint is a better option in my opinion.
i was thinking the same thing. I can buy similar paint, in a similar size at Target for 1.75. It lasts a long time. This is about 8 -10 $ worth of materials to make one little bottle.
This person shows people how to use mica powder, but she is a very unsafe person who doesn’t use a mask while using the stuff they can get into your lungs and stay there forever… you should use your brain

Thank you for your advice on wearing a mask. You are one of the few mica powder artists who recommend doing so. Sure don't want to inhale this stuff.

Thanks for the info 😊. Wooden kebab skewers work well mixing in bottles. Love that electric mixer want one!
Check out a kitchen utensils outlet as they are for frothing milk:)
I find that about 2-3 tiny bb size pebbles in the bottom helps mix the paint as 2.
I wonder could you mix gloss and matte medium for an inbetween? Or would one cancel out the other?
Does the basic Acrylic paint work with this method ?

So comprehensive to beginners like me, thank you!
Have you ever heard of Pebeo Bindex? I was wondering if that could be used? It has very little information on the tube.
Take the frother end off of the battery operated dohicky and put it in a cordless drill. Works much better

Just ask for it at a paint ir hardware store. Even the dollar stores carries it ,some Walmart as well.

I wonder if putting a few metal bearings at the bottom would work. Or is it too thick?
Thank you for your video😊
Can acrylic clear coat be used as a medium to mix mica powders in?
Oh that's awesome. This looks like a lot fun to make....oh the pretty colors. 😁😁
It's so much fun. If you paint, I really recommend mixing some of your own!
can i use white acrylic instead of acrylic medium?
What acrylic medium did you use

use white house paint
@@elizabethdains643 do you recommend a specific brand and type - satin glossy semi gloss?
Thanks!
This drawing is Amazing and you have skills to draw this........ KEEP IT UP..... And I am waiting for your next drawing.....
Did this comment misfire? There's no drawing in this video.
Great info thanks!!

PPE is needed with Mica powders!
Would this work out for tie dye projects? What's the name of the medium you used?
This is for acrylic paint. It wouldn't work in dye very well, because the mica powder itself won't stick to the fabric. The medium I used is an acrylic paint medium, which contains a type of glue that keeps the powder on the paper.
Thank you for sharing👌‼️. Toom@CapeTown
That spoon though lol🤦🏾♂️
Where do you get your mica powder?
I got mine on Amazon. It'll usually come in variety packs, but I'm pretty sure you can get specific colours in larger quantities too.
TKB trading has all the mica you could ever need for a great price
Couldn't you use some steel balls to help mix the paint?
you really need to mix it before you put it in the bottle. it's easy.
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Great demo thankyou will be making some❣️🌈
PVA GLUE. RIGHT 👍
I am surprised that you aren't taking nor recommending the safety precautions needed to handle the highly toxic nature of the pigments

Wear a mask with mica powders.
Think you used toooooo much 🤪mica

@@wernerhiemer406 But it didn't sound like SHE was wearing one. I think that might be the point?
