Just fabulous. I saw Vassar Clements when he played at the Paramount in Seattle with David Grisman and Tony Rice. Vassar is a musical legend. Doc and Merle Watson rounded out the double bill that night. I first heard Mark O'Conner when he was busking at the Seattle Folk Life Festival. Amazing at just 13 years old. Jerry Douglas on dobro is just terrific. Caught him with Union Station, just before they hit it big and got their first Grammy with Alison Krauss. All great musicians and humans.
Back in 1994, after 3 years of being playing violin, i listened the album "Heroes", and this piece was the first track i heard from it. It was such a powerful experience i decided i would devote my future violin playing to find my own violin voice within jazz, blues and pther creative styles, and i started doing that way before getting my violin college degree. So, what i want to say is, THANK YOU MARK.
R.I.P. Vassar. I knew him as a bluegrass fiddler but this showed a totally different side to his talents, What a talented musician! As is Mark O'Conner.
As many times as this old standard has been performed and recorded, and not taking anything away from the others, this is the best version of Rising Sun ever. The version on the album is just a tad better as it includes a great solo by Sam Bush (on the mandolin) as well.
The compact cassette titles "Heros" featuring this one is my favorite. This wonderful piece is excellent. It is great to see each violinist inspire the other. Of course, each title in the album is a jewel. How I wish I could see their videos like this one.
I got to see Vassar live in a small venue in St. Loo. He was a polished pro and even gave me an autograph. He was not exactly thrilled that I mentioned that my first exposure to his work was in the movie 'Nashville", which I thought was a GREAT movie but it was not exactly flattering to the town/genre, but he was gracious nonetheless.
Wow ! Double wow !! Triple wow !!! That's some of the most fantastic fiddlin' I have ever heard ! There's a lot of terrific talent on that stage ! Thanks for uploading ! CHEERS !! :-)
These Performers have to be so thoroughly confident in their abilities and have such a respect for the other to cooperate on music like this. Usually, cooperation between musicians is governed by rests but, this performance and their cooperation is nice to see.
As much as I love this cut on the Heros CD, I have to say that I love this live version even more. Even after all these years I'm still completely mesmerized by how effortlessly Vassar plays with the softest touch.
you can't go wrong with either of these two players. Meaning Alasdair and Mark. I met Alasdair's wife doing a repair at their house in Santa Cruz in the 90"s. what a player.
My kinda music.......American Music Shop ! As good as Vassar Clements and Mark O'Connor are I also like studio musicians like Stuart Duncan and many other bluegrassers too ! Thanks for the great music, always.

you're a lucky man
Definitely one of the most soulful and amazing fiddlers ever. What a unique and admirable style!
Sounds like those violins are weeping... my God how beautiful they are!

The respect that they all have for Vassar is clear. Hauntingly beautiful!
nothing captures the highs and lows of the human spirit like the violin
And a young Jerry Douglas too! Brilliant!
My favorite song on the whole album- Vassar has the most soul of anyone who’s played that song.
Love this … that violin duet at the end , so great
Wow!!!!!
Vassar owning that stage.
Check Vassar out on the "Old & in the Way" recordings and Dickey Betts "Highway Call" album.🎸
I've seen this like 50 times and still it's the best music video ever
That's a lot of talent on one stage. I watched this show religiously, loved it, heard a lot of music that otherwise I would never had known. Sublime.

We played this one at our social distanced jam today in Jeffersonville IN. ...well ..not quite like this..
I should like to hear Patricia Kopatcheskaja and Mark to play together, they are both violinists and have a lot of temper.
re sacheros los changos, bien ahí
This would be absolutely perfect for Read Dead Redemption
