For those of you who are having trouble with “No Disk found” you have to disable your system integrity protection
Restart your computer and as you hear the chime hold command + R
In mac nav bar (Top left click near Apple log) click untiles then terminal
Type in csrutil disable then click enter
Restart your mac then run photo rec it worked for me 🙏🏽
Make sure to put your system intergrity protection back after

DOES NOT work in 2019. It FAILED to work on my Macbook. I spent an hour trying to do this and at 1:35 instead of opening the chill window with 10 lines asking for a password, mine opened this text edit thing with THOUSANDS Of lines of code in it!! I am soooo exhausted and about to pay $80 for some rip off software to just give me my footage back. I HATEEE Capitalism, I would pay $20 - $30 to fix this, but asking for more than the adsense I'll make on the video is SO evil.

If you are facing a harddisk not found issue. Might be because you are running mac osx high sierra. Just google: ‘photorec harddisk not found’ and you will find a relevant answer. One more thing, you can use the sudo command in the terminal instead of going to the root user. Otherwise, just enter the admin password when it initially prompts you to (the white window) and press enter. Otherwise great video man! My recovery process is currently underway, hoping for the best!

I keep getting "Bad CPU type in executable" when I try to run Photorec
i got this too on a mid-2012 macbook pro; the latest version of photorec doesn't work on my 64-bit cpu, but here's how i got it running:
1) get homebrew (just google this, it's straightforward)
2) open a terminal and run 'brew install testdisk' (no quotes)
3) in terminal, do 'sudo photorec' and enter your system password
then it should work as shown in the video. he's using version 7.1, which supports 64-bit cpus, and that's the version that gets installed if you install using homebrew. won't find out if it actually worked for another hour and a half; here's hoping
well, didn't work, only found 7 files, some .gz, .bdl (i think), a sqlite database, but no .jpg or .arw

Photorec is trying to install Xcode command line tools? Or homebrew? I have those installed currently and think I did before attempting any photorec stuff, but it was a while ago and I’m not sure about that

I followed all of your instructions. But when I open some of the file on Quick time player nothing is there. Or I get an error message that says Quicktime player can't open(File name). Please help!!!!

it worked! i just had to choose ext2/ext3 instead of "other" because my files where jpg not raws but i recover everything including videos :) thank you man!
watching this in 2022, now the Beta is 7.2 and I tried going over your instructions and got until the terminal part but the values are not the same as the 7.1 version. when open the terminal it just says there [Process completed] and nothing more. can't type anything.

Just go to the system preference menu and you can delete it from the user group.
you can undo it with the same process you added it but instead of enable root user disable it i watched the video again to undo it
How did you move the raw files after the recovery process. All my files are in my documents but can’t move them or open them with photoshop.

I restarted my Mac, downloaded the program, clicked photorec, and I did not get the terminal. If I log onto the admin/root account, I don't see photorec in the admin/root account

This didn't work for me. I got to the last stage where my files appeared. They were all MOV. When I opened the videos all I heard was white static noise and the screen was black

So... it definitely recovered photos! But I can't seem to open any .mov or .mp4 files.... it just freezes Finder. And I can't even move them to an external drive to get them out of that 'root' user desktop. What do I do?

Hope you figured it out. I had to do an option + command = delete to delete the photos.
If you you receive a "Bad CPU type" download Homebrew from Terminal by long command from (brew.sh/#install) and once installed enter "brew install TestDisk" into Terminal. Then use the binary photorec installed via home-brew instead of the binary download from cgsecurity.org and run "sudo photorec"

This didn't work for me at first.... It was not showing me my disks. I was able to do it another way without a root user. First look up "HOMEBREW and TESTDISK Installation Tutorial" you should be greeted by some nice nerdy lookin guy. Follow every step until he types "sudo testdisk" in his terminal. you will need to type "sudo photorec" you will need to type in a password but after the program runs come back to this video!

In root mode, after I've redownloaded and clicked on photorec, it brings up the terminal but I don't see anything like drives being listed. I'm not sure what to do next to get it to work :(

There are some corrupted files after the recovery. Is there a way to access those too? About 117 files were good, but 52 were corrupted.

“photorec” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash.
So I found my files but can't seem to get them out of the saved folder into another drive. Mac just says preparing to copy (any ideas)?
I did everything step by step to the T and when logging into to root user, when clicking photorec, the options for SD card do not appear what am I doing wrong help??????

What do you do after your files have been recovered?? I can’t move them to my external drive or even open them to look at them. I get the rainbow circle of death every time. 🤷🏻♂️ any idea as to why this is happening??

Yes! I used RePicvid instead. Free. Worked perfectly! Very easy.
Me and another photog shared an SD card. I have cannon and she has Nikon. She had to re format and pay for software to retrieve her files. So why I did not think to re format my card is beyond me. Some irreplaceable sessions were done and boom. I was hysterical! Thank you from every fiber of my being! I cannot thank you enough!!!

Keep selecting the . . until you go all the way back and see /Volumes. Select /Volumes and find your external drive there. Good luck!

Hi Dean, when I accidentally reformatted my camera's SD card I took an additional 60 pictures. I didn't realize I had deleted 59GB of memory. Now when I attempt to recover the 59GB of memory I lost it only recovers the 60 pictures I took after reformatting the cameras SD. Is it to late to recover the 59GB I lost?

@@pilarposada2804 Were you able to do that? Mine won't move, so they're trapped in this 'root' user account as well. It was 'preparing to move' for ages, I couldn't get them onto an external drive.

how do u remove the root account from the mac?
follow the same steps to enable it, but then click "disable root user" when you get to the menu where it would say enable root user previously.

It may be complicated, but like romances, it's complicated. Take time, do it, it's worth it. The video DOES get it right, which is a better option than not getting it right.

This worked like a charm. The terminal window came straight up, so I skipped the steps for that, but then the SD card was not showing up. I went back and followed the other steps and it showed up in the "root" login. Thanks so much Dean!
This works great for recovering photos! It did not work for my videos, sadly. They show up as recovered, but only play a black screen in QuickTime.
WOW...THANK YOU SO MUCH DEAN I SAW YOUR COMMENT FROM ANDREW'S VIDEO AND IMMEDIATELY CAME OVER SINCE I HAVE A MAC. I had a panick attack and could not stop crying because smart me shoved a full SD card into a cheaper type of GoPro camera and was to excited that when prompted with the option to format...I clicked yes. It was than that I freaked out since this SD card holds ALL my photos and videos from my 3 months vacation in Europe. I was too scared to tell my dad so I went online and downloaded any software I could find but to my dismay I would've had to pay 100$. Thanks to you I don't and starting to look happier upon life (as you can tell I got serious anxiety from this) . Now I'm just waiting for my files to come back with an estimated time of completion of 100+ hours but I don't even mind anymore. I do have one question; all my videos show a dark grey screen when I open it but I still haven't finished fully recovering files. Will my videos show up afterwards?

Great video! Note: you can just type ‘cd *drag the sub folder ‘7B’ into terminal, press return the use the command ‘sudo ./photorec’ without the need to enable or login as ‘root’ as an administrator you are already a ‘sudo user’ or ‘super user do’ 👍 so the terminal will look like ‘cd Downloads/testdisk-7.1-WIP 3/7B’ enter, the type ‘sudo ./photorec’ enter your password. Hope this helps someone

My root user wont work (finder freezes) so I tried this. I don't have the 7B folder, I have one called 78. I'm in version 7.2

thank you so so much - I can't believe this actually worked - my phone unlocked itself in my pocket and decided to format my sd card - 4000 pictures from the last three years - was scared to get my hopes up but currently have 1600 files recovered in 20 mins - over the moon!
got 6800 files in the recovery in the end - a good few are copies but seems like all my photos are there - even if I'm missing some I feel so relieved to have the bulk of them back safe and sound - I need to invest in some hard drives or cloud storage to stop giving myself heart attacks like this!
I just followed your instructions and attempted to recover a few video files I accidentally deleted from an SD card. The video was taken with a Canon M50. It restored the JPG files perfectly, and it created a large number of mp4 and mdat.mov files. None of these files were playable with Quicktime or VLC. I also tried CardRescue, but got similar results. Any suggestions?
