For those of you who are having trouble with “No Disk found” you have to disable your system integrity protection
Restart your computer and as you hear the chime hold command + R
In mac nav bar (Top left click near Apple log) click untiles then terminal
Type in csrutil disable then click enter
Restart your mac then run photo rec it worked for me 🙏🏽
Make sure to put your system intergrity protection back after

If you are facing a harddisk not found issue. Might be because you are running mac osx high sierra. Just google: ‘photorec harddisk not found’ and you will find a relevant answer. One more thing, you can use the sudo command in the terminal instead of going to the root user. Otherwise, just enter the admin password when it initially prompts you to (the white window) and press enter. Otherwise great video man! My recovery process is currently underway, hoping for the best!
it worked! i just had to choose ext2/ext3 instead of "other" because my files where jpg not raws but i recover everything including videos :) thank you man!

DOES NOT work in 2019. It FAILED to work on my Macbook. I spent an hour trying to do this and at 1:35 instead of opening the chill window with 10 lines asking for a password, mine opened this text edit thing with THOUSANDS Of lines of code in it!! I am soooo exhausted and about to pay $80 for some rip off software to just give me my footage back. I HATEEE Capitalism, I would pay $20 - $30 to fix this, but asking for more than the adsense I'll make on the video is SO evil.

absolutely outstanding...recently took a trip to Colorado and my daughter took some pictures that were very good...I unfortunately accidentally deleted them and was heart broken...this process was easy and free. Just go to the system preference menu and you can delete it from the user group.
you can undo it with the same process you added it but instead of enable root user disable it i watched the video again to undo it
How did you move the raw files after the recovery process. All my files are in my documents but can’t move them or open them with photoshop.
watching this in 2022, now the Beta is 7.2 and I tried going over your instructions and got until the terminal part but the values are not the same as the 7.1 version. when open the terminal it just says there [Process completed] and nothing more. can't type anything.
This didn't work for me at first.... It was not showing me my disks. I was able to do it another way without a root user. First look up "HOMEBREW and TESTDISK Installation Tutorial" you should be greeted by some nice nerdy lookin guy. Follow every step until he types "sudo testdisk" in his terminal. you will need to type "sudo photorec" you will need to type in a password but after the program runs come back to this video!

You sir are a legend! tried it today for the files I lost from my thursday photoshoot and it worked like a charm. The only really free and the easiest way I've come across and I've been searching for a way to get my files back the whole weekend. Thanks again mate, you just made my day (really my week)!
I keep getting "Bad CPU type in executable" when I try to run Photorec
i got this too on a mid-2012 macbook pro; the latest version of photorec doesn't work on my 64-bit cpu, but here's how i got it running:
1) get homebrew (just google this, it's straightforward)
2) open a terminal and run 'brew install testdisk' (no quotes)
3) in terminal, do 'sudo photorec' and enter your system password
then it should work as shown in the video. he's using version 7.1, which supports 64-bit cpus, and that's the version that gets installed if you install using homebrew. won't find out if it actually worked for another hour and a half; here's hoping
well, didn't work, only found 7 files, some .gz, .bdl (i think), a sqlite database, but no .jpg or .arw

Photorec is trying to install Xcode command line tools? Or homebrew? I have those installed currently and think I did before attempting any photorec stuff, but it was a while ago and I’m not sure about that

Hi Rojas, you describe so well and I did the same but some issue occur again n again to recover files. I had to use third party program Stellar and I recovered. Although I did not have any issue using this program. But as you did in videos I wanted to do this.

Me and another photog shared an SD card. I have cannon and she has Nikon. She had to re format and pay for software to retrieve her files. So why I did not think to re format my card is beyond me. Some irreplaceable sessions were done and boom. I was hysterical! Thank you from every fiber of my being! I cannot thank you enough!!!

What do you do after your files have been recovered?? I can’t move them to my external drive or even open them to look at them. I get the rainbow circle of death every time. 🤷🏻♂️ any idea as to why this is happening??

In root mode, after I've redownloaded and clicked on photorec, it brings up the terminal but I don't see anything like drives being listed. I'm not sure what to do next to get it to work :(

I rarely recommend people but Nordhackk on Instagram helped me recover my files
I restarted my Mac, downloaded the program, clicked photorec, and I did not get the terminal. If I log onto the admin/root account, I don't see photorec in the admin/root account

Hope you figured it out. I had to do an option + command = delete to delete the photos.
thank you so so much - I can't believe this actually worked - my phone unlocked itself in my pocket and decided to format my sd card - 4000 pictures from the last three years - was scared to get my hopes up but currently have 1600 files recovered in 20 mins - over the moon!
got 6800 files in the recovery in the end - a good few are copies but seems like all my photos are there - even if I'm missing some I feel so relieved to have the bulk of them back safe and sound - I need to invest in some hard drives or cloud storage to stop giving myself heart attacks like this!

It's recovering things right now, and I see a ton of photos, but I'm after a video I shot today (and I swear I imported it, ugggg). I see .bdm files and .mov files, both have the Quicktime logo but when I try to open them in Quicktime, I get the spinning rainbow ball. What do I do?

Keep selecting the . . until you go all the way back and see /Volumes. Select /Volumes and find your external drive there. Good luck!

This didn't work for me. I got to the last stage where my files appeared. They were all MOV. When I opened the videos all I heard was white static noise and the screen was black

Hello! Your video saved me last year... but I have another SD card problem! and this time, it doesn't work from 2:54.Terminal screen doesn't show "Continue previous session Y/N". the terminal freezes and I can't type anything. Is this because I'm using the latest OS Catalina 10.15.1 ??

If you you receive a "Bad CPU type" download Homebrew from Terminal by long command from (brew.sh/#install) and once installed enter "brew install TestDisk" into Terminal. Then use the binary photorec installed via home-brew instead of the binary download from cgsecurity.org and run "sudo photorec"

The files I wanted to get back have been recovered but the videos won’t play. Does anybody know how to fix them or knows a different way to recover videos without having to pay hundreds of buck. Losing important videos is so heartbreaking. :(

Hi Dean, when I accidentally reformatted my camera's SD card I took an additional 60 pictures. I didn't realize I had deleted 59GB of memory. Now when I attempt to recover the 59GB of memory I lost it only recovers the 60 pictures I took after reformatting the cameras SD. Is it to late to recover the 59GB I lost?

@@pilarposada2804 Were you able to do that? Mine won't move, so they're trapped in this 'root' user account as well. It was 'preparing to move' for ages, I couldn't get them onto an external drive.

how do u remove the root account from the mac?
follow the same steps to enable it, but then click "disable root user" when you get to the menu where it would say enable root user previously.

Waaay to complicated for most of us.
It may be complicated, but like romances, it's complicated. Take time, do it, it's worth it. The video DOES get it right, which is a better option than not getting it right.

Is this working on BIG SUR? When I open the Terminal, I cannot choose the source of the media, just that I "have to" switch to zsh. When it asks me for my password, I can't type in anything anymore :(

at first i had problems because they kept saying that the app "is damaged and cannot be opened", but once you open terminal (in applications) and drag the file into terminal, hit enter, it opens up to the same screen as in your video. then photorec ran smoothly from there!
This worked like a charm. The terminal window came straight up, so I skipped the steps for that, but then the SD card was not showing up. I went back and followed the other steps and it showed up in the "root" login. Thanks so much Dean!
