As a die-hard Halep fan, it wasn't really a rivalry, Sharapova won against Halep every time they met before the Meldonium scandal. And even after that, Sharapova managed to win against her at US Open in 3 sets (though she could have won in two sets). There were some matches where Halep could've won, but Sharapova had the mental toughness that helped her manage the moments where she could've lost a lot better. She knew when to be more aggressive, when to show more variety, when to change the tactics. Halep had moments when she could've solitified the advantage, including in this match, but she didn't really have many answers until Beijing 2017 when she finally put to the test from A to Z the plans that were necessary for her to win against Sharapova. To be more assertive and sure of herself, especially when it came to the second serve and the moments where she could make Sharapova run. And in 2017-2018 Sharapova besides the fact that she didn't use Meldonium anymore, which gave her an advantage in the long matches against her opponents, she was a lot older. She was no longer an 18 year old girl, not even a 23-25 year old woman who was at her peak both physically and mentally. And again, I'm saying that as a die-hard Halep fan.
