♫ Carmen Cavallaro (1913 - 1989), was known as the "Poet of the Piano". He was an outstanding pianist who had his own band during the 'Big Band Era' in the 40's. He applied his fantastic piano technique to every style of music, including jazz, latin rhythms, and popular dance songs. In his later years, he gave many concerts in Japan, and was very popular there.
♫ Carmen was Marian McPartland's guest shortly before he passed away in 1989. On this episode of Piano Jazz, Cavallaro solos on his own arrangement of a Cole Porter medley and joins McPartland for a piece entitled "Lover, Love Me Tonight".

A great interview with a brilliant pop-jazz pianist. Cavallaro was still near the top of his game when he was interviewed here by Marian MacPartland. Just listen to those descending runs that Cavallaro gets off. The clarity and sparkle is still there. Thanks so much for up uploading this historic broadcast to youtube.

Thanks John, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've long admired Carmen's piano playing. There are very few live videos of his performances. One in particular I'm trying to find is when he appeared on the original Tonight Show with Steve Allen. He performed his famous arrangement of 'Brazil' from the movie "The Eddy Duchin Story". If I ever find it, I will upload it.

I've only heard Cavallaro's "Brazil" from the resulting LP that came out of the "The Eddy Duchin Story" movie. That is an invigorated and pianistically virtuosic conception. Lots of great drive as well. Would love to see that "Tonight Show" version of "Brazil". Hope you find it, Timothy.

Thank you Timothy for this revelation. I’ve followed Carmen for years, loving his music. Never heard his voice and he sounds so laid back and easy going. But what a genius he was. Great too, to hear him play solo, without being shadowed by other musicians. ‘Dolores my own’, a tune I’ve always enjoyed, was a joy to hear solo. A great hour of brilliant music and interesting conversation.

Have been a fan since the early sixties and my father decades before that, it is so nice to hear his voice for the first time in all those years. Thank you. ❤️

Hello Alan, I'm happy you enjoyed this rare recording. Finding anything like this is very difficult. There is a recent video of one of his last concerts in Japan; where he played for many years. He was ill at the time; but still played fantastically. Here is the link:

Marian did around 700 of these programmes, and it is such a pity that only a small fraction of them have been made commercially available on disc. I am still trying to hunt out copies of programmes she did with Gene Harris, Ray Bryant and Mel Torme!

Many wonderful programs, that are hard to find. I've been looking for Peter Nero, and Roger Williams. The only possibility that I know of is the New York Public Library. They have many old format copys.

Friends over the years have supplied me with some of these programmes on cassette tape, but I never came across the ones by Peter Nero or Roger Williams. Many years ago I wrote to Marian McPartland asking her about a programme she did with Phineas Newborn Jr and knowing I didn't have this, she then went down to the studio where all the recordings were located, and promptly ran me off a copy! Such a nice person! She was much respected in the jazz fraternity, and it really was quite amazing how she was able to cross all styles and accompany her guests in duet so well!

A wonderful story! Listening to Marian's program was always a bright
spot to me; and something I looked forward to. I'm not a jazz pianist, but
I loved her program and always learned something from listening. I've often
found that the most talented people, are usually the nicest and so modest!

@@TimothyStapay Getting involved in this subject has reminded me that I have a box of audio cassettes stored under the bed, and I have just gone through them all, and found several of Marian's programmes. This serves to remind me that audio cassettes have now been superseded, much like video cassettes. I should have therefore taken steps to have some these programmes transferred to disc, especially as they have a limited shelf life. I still have a cassette player, but rarely use it, so if play some these, no doubt some will have deteriorated.

Aired on NPR for SO many years. Could they possibly have copies?
