  • Barry Harris is a seminal figure in the jazz world. The "keeper of the bebop flame," as critics have called him, Harris is committed to preserving jazz through education and performance. His workshops play an important part in his life and in the lives of many young musicians.
On this 2002 episode of Piano Jazz, Harris demonstrates how he earned a reputation as one of the most inventive and respected pianists today when he solos on "It Could Happen To You." Host Marian McPartland and Harris show off their bebop chops on Charlie Parker's "Au Privave."

When Barry plays something he always says:” I say” not “I play”

Is it just me or does Barry steal the legato and fluidity out of Marilyn's playing

Could have, but they come from very different perspectives. Marilyn had a very subtle free swing fighting against straight bebop of Barry.. they needed to play together a while to meld as they are so different.

"What A Friend We Have In Jesus" was written by Joseph Scriven and Charles Converse.
I hope you know him as Saviour.

Lets give a nod to Marian McPartland who passed back in 2013, a UK born jazz pianist. She could cut the mustard, even though she did not become famous in the world of jazz. You can tell Barry Harris has respect for her, and she for him. Thanks to You Tube, we can see footage of both.

I only wished I saw her play in Jazz Alley when I lived in Seattle, too young to appreciate history as it happens, saw it advertised, as long as many other giants I missed. I had a chance to a few.
