  • In this episode I hit a 20 ply monster, that's 14 plies of maple and 6 of birch and with a shell that think it's not as loud as you might think.
    With all those plies it still has amazing sensitivity which goes against the usual thick shell characteristics.

      @mpelevic 4 месяца назад

      @@simone5753 I suppose it was nothing to write home about. Wooden hoops are good at taming metal snare drums. 20 ply + wood hoops… less projection, less crack, a bit dead. Could be adequate for specific situations, but you would get tired of it very quickly.
      That is my assumption. I would like to know if I was right, from someone who has really tried it. :)

    • @IAMDRUMMER
      @IAMDRUMMER  Год назад +1

      6.5 is my go to depth with most drums as it’s proven standard almost, having said that a 5” has more bite to it and still sounds amazing. The Vinnie Gretsch is a killer drum and I was laying in to it for hours. The band coins get enough of it which is unusual for a band.

    Great snare videos .. I really enjoy them. Well done. I have the D.W. Black Nickel over brass 14 x 5.5" Collector's series snare drum among a bunch of others. I was wondering what type of Evans drum head would you recommend using? Presently, I have a the Genera Snare Batter on it (single 10 ply with a 2 mil control ring on the underside that floats with the head). I like the idea of the control ring for eliminating excessive overtones, since it it a metal snare drum, however since it is brass and a little warmer.... is the drum head that I'm using "overkill" for "ring" control?

    • @ericlee8344
      @ericlee8344 6 лет назад +1

      John Di Raimo I would suggest the Evans Bogo head, it has 2 plies with a control ring sandwiched between the 2 plies

    • @IAMDRUMMER
      @IAMDRUMMER  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much for the compliments and yes the DW NOB is a drum I would love to play and own at some stage when I come across one. I would use a coated Evans G1 with a snare weight so you can add instantly a small, medium and large amount of dampening. It's all personal preference and taste.

    • @johndiraimo1444
      @johndiraimo1444 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your suggestion. I generally prefer a single ply drum head for the snare. My concern with 2 plies is that the snare's natural sensitivity spectrum might get lost and be choked. In essence the drum head (Genera Snare Batter) I'm using now is the exact same as the Evans G1 only with a 2 mil. control ring underneath. I guess it all depends on the sound that you want to hear ... as "I AM DRUMMER" says ... it's all personal taste.

    • @johndiraimo1444
      @johndiraimo1444 6 лет назад

      Thank you for responding. The drum head I'm using now (Evans Genera Snare Batter) is the exact same as the Evans 10 ply you suggest .... only with the 2 mil control on the bottom. As I'm still learning differences in drumheads and what to use with wood snares versus metal snares .... what are your thoughts on using 2 ply drum heads on the snare? G2's etc. Thank you !

    • @IAMDRUMMER
      @IAMDRUMMER  6 лет назад +1

      I'm the same and I did play around with 2 ply snare heads for a while for durability and they sure do last a bit longer but with playing trad I really want that sensitivity and to hear as much of the raw natural tone of the drum.

    • @IAMDRUMMER

Anyway, I'm willing to bet it's the best wood-shell snare drum in your collection, but if I was going to get one, and pay the money, then it would have to be the brassy. If that thing is a rifle, then the brass version is a 20mm cannon.Tell me something - when you tune up the top head from low to high, do you tighten the snare head too, or leave it at the same tension?

Had 2 bone graft and pin ops to try and repair it but they failed. Suffered a wrist collapse in 2004, had a 4 corner fusion op in 2005, then metal removal in 2007, I also had a severe TFCC tear repaired but the fusion had also failed, had another fusion op last year that ALSO failed so now I’m waiting for yet another op.

    $400 for a high-quality snare drum is not that much, Black Beauties go for $600 plus. Sonor, Tama SLP, and the top of the line DW are $750 and up.
    Pearl Reference snare drums are actually pretty well priced. that said you will not find a better value in a high-end snare drum then the Pork Pie Big Black.

      This drum back then retailed for around the $1200AUD so to get it for $400 is a bargain.

      @@IAMDRUMMER , exactly. To spend less then $500 and get a top quality snare drum is a rarity. You definitely got a steal of a deal at $400!

    Crazy good deal.
    I have been in love with it for a long time, but could never find the guts to justify the cost...

      For me I’ve always felt that way about DW and Tama. Pearl and Sonor were always my favorite sounding kits. But still above all, tuning technique made the biggest difference.

      I love TAMA hardware - I have Pro and Star stands, Iron Cobra pedals and hi-hat and a couple of fantastic 1st Chair drum stools (thrones?) - but my PEARLs are my babies, and I'm on my 4th kit. P.S. I do have a DW snare stand and it's just OK! Oh yes, and PAISTE all the way!

    My gosh man, turn off the 20 tonnes of reverb so we can hear the drum!!!
