  • Say Anything’s major label debut and second LP ...Is a Real Boy is a masterful mix of angst, social commentary, and theatricality. It’s also the album Say Anything frontman Max Bemis ranks as his best work. But creating the album was a taxing process, costing him his physical and mental health, and resulting in a manic episode. We sat down with Bemis to talk about the process of creating the album, his mindset at the time, and what he would change about the experience.

Reading the headlines this morning I’m reminded of how important these songs have been to my life. I was 21 in Detox clutching a tiny boom box the staff let me keep in my room.
I had one CD left because I had sold all the others or left them in places I was no longer welcome.
I’ll let you guess which CD.
Belt means something completely different in detox and lines like
“I’m still the optimist though it is hard when all you want to be is in a dream” are probably the only thing that kept me from walking out the door. I’d literally be dead if it weren’t for those songs.

Glad I’m not the only one that picked up on this, when I read his farewell thing for the new album I was confused, like I understand the logic of looking back and really hating the person you were but to say that it was a character I call bullshit, when you clearly have gone through multiple things that happened I just don’t believe it being a character, it’s going to be weird with the new album because already the two songs I’ve heard definitely don’t sound relatable and is over the top in some ways, they are good songs but the lyrics don’t mean anything to me.

I remember listening to Say Anything back in Puerto Rico, This album came to me at the perfect time at my life.
Thank you Max for your music. I have many stories with many of your Bands hits and tracks in my life.
Now today when I drive I will put in Is a real boy... and sing my fucking ass off.
