  • Gale Eugene Sayers was a legendary NFL halfback and return specialist who played for the Chicago Bears from 1965 to 1971. Despite a career shortened by injuries, Sayers made a significant impact in the NFL, recognized for his agility and elusiveness. He amassed 22 touchdowns and 2,272 all-purpose yards in his rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors. Over his first five seasons, he achieved four Pro Bowl appearances and five first-team All-Pro selections. Sayers led the NFL in rushing in 1969, earning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award after a severe knee injury in 1968. Another knee injury in 1970 curtailed his career. Sayers’ friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo, who died of cancer in 1970, inspired his autobiography "I Am Third," which led to the 1971 TV movie "Brian's Song." Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 at age 34, he is the youngest inductee ever. Sayers was also named to the NFL's 75th and 100th Anniversary Teams. His jersey is retired by both the Bears and the University of Kansas. Post-NFL, he pursued sports administration and was the athletic director at Southern Illinois University from 1976 to 1981.
