The only people on film who knew Borat was an act were Borat's actor, Azamat's actor, Luenell the prostitute and Pamela Anderson. Everyone else was a normal person and they had just filmed their natural reactions to Borat's actions.

@@TheJerbol I've heard conflicting reports. Apparently (most of) the villagers thought they were filming a documentary about their poor living conditions and were mad when they found out the truth.
And the Jewish couple Sasha respected them too much, rightfully so to be honest they both survived the Holocaust.

That's what made it so good! LOL! Sacha is great! I understand some people think he's a dick, but he's a really good actor. He attended one of the best schools for acting in Europe. It's not just the acting, but he's got the balls to stay in character with his undercover camera crew in any situation. Borat is one of my favorite comedies. I also love his tv show, Who is America? THAT WAS AWESOME! He took his undercover acting to the next level infiltrating the US government and the NRA to try to bring out their true asshole self on camera! It was so damning that Trump supporters tried to catch him in the act and kill him at a rally! Didn't Trump or someone in government try to ask police for an arrest warrant of Sacha Baron Cohen? If Trump's the devil in disguise, Sacha is Jesus reborn as a comedian (unknowingly referenced the recent Family Guy episode Faith No More when Brian changes history by suggesting Jesus become a comedian).
Had to laugh at Tien feeling guilty for laughing 'we're going to hell for this!' 🤣🤣🤣🤣Bless her heart!

That is not correct. The movie was never baned in Kazakhstan, there was some taboid newspaper that just made that up.
The the President of Kazakhstan made a PR event where he went watched the movie in the Cinema a second time to prove that it as not true and gave a interview about how funny the movie is and he really likes it.
The false claim is still up on wikipedia

Hearing her say "ping pong" 3:24 was oddly satisfying and made me feel like it was the first time I'd ever heard it pronounced correctly.
Sacha Baron Cohen is the actor that plays Borat. He's actually Jewish is real life. He has a lot of other characters he plays. Ali G is a character he would play and interview people as that character and people would not know what the hell was happening. He also has the character BRUNO, a gay fashion reporter. He's famous for mixing real pranks into a narrative structure. You ladies should definitely watch the next Borat film: Borat Subsequent Movie Film. It features Borat's daughter.

Oh boy, this one is certainly a wild one. Saw it in my younger years with my dad and then 77 year old great grandma, it was cringe inducing, gag inducing and utterly hilarious. Funniest thing my grandmother always recalled was Borat washing his face in the hotel room toilet, Sacha Baron Cohen delivered.

Since everyone else already commented on the film and its reception and other things, I just thought I'd say how much I really enjoyed these three gorgeous ladies reacting to this film. I must say how impressed I was that Lang knew so much about certain things like the beer drinking (shotgunning) in this comedy/farce. Plus she was much more animated with all her facial expressions and I seen her during the other reactions here and on her own channel with Tien (which I also love to watch. Along with Chi, you'll become a favorite raptors because I always come away laughing, or crying, or saying "WTF did I just watch" right along with all of you.

Saw Borat opening night, theater was backed. The nude wrestling scene left me hurting because I laughed so hard, the theater was the loudest laughing I have ever seen.

Most of the interaction with people was a prank and the were real people but some was set up. The guys in the camper actually sued the film makers. The scene with Pamela was staged (she was in on it).

also you asked how they would not notice a non hidden cam like at dining table? the crew would just explain "pretend " that they were just making a documentary of his travels and experiences in USA. So the real people would think it was normal to film.

I'm actually from Kazakhstan. None of the actors and none of the sets have anything to do with Kazakhstan. There's ZERO Kazakhs in the movie and there's ZERO shots made in Kazakhstan.

Also, the boys in the camper sued Sasha Baron Cohen for publicizing what they thought was a private conversation. The boys mentioned that America favors minorities which led to black people harassing the boys after hearing it in the movie.
So yes, with a few exceptions most all were real reactions. They were told it was all a joke after the filming and got their permission to be filmed.

This type of comedy is called, "Cringe Comedy", where you literally cringe at what you're eyes are seeing because it feels so out of context in a normal situation that you often feel offended or embarrassed to watch.

The 2 things that make this movie so unique is most of the stuff was real and Sacha Cohen(Borat) is a legendary actor at improvising. He stayed in character even when many of those situations were very dangerous. More than once he has had to run away from people that threaten violence and death. The main joke of the movie is USA people. As dumb as he made himself he reveled a lot of people doing and saying some pretty terrible things. And most of them didn't realize how bad they looked until after film came out.

Almost all of the scenes are "real" as in, hidden cameras with people who don't know they are being filmed. Either before or after they film a scene, they get the consent of the people being filmed.But the producers of Borat told the people signing that they were part of a documentary film, that Borat was a real person. They were sued several times by the people in the film, but the movie company won every case.
Borat, the actor playing his producer, Pamela Andeson and Luellen (the prostitute) were all actors and in on the joke. They knew what was real, but played along.
In fact, the Pamela Anderson scene in the movie is the second time they shot the scene. The first time they tried, security didn't interfere, neither did the crowd, and "Borat" got away with Pamela Anderson!
