- What can this 20th-century experiment tell us about how socialism works in practice?
With renewed debate approaching the 2020 presidential election about the potential impact of socialist influenced policies in America, the successes and failures of Milwaukee's "Sewer Socialists" profiled in America’s Socialist Experiment offer some real-world examples for those who only know socialism as a philosophy or label.

Love this documentary highlighting Milwaukee's Sewer Socialists though one minor tidbit: while Milwaukee was the most successful Socialist-run city in the US, Bridgeport, Connecticut was also pretty successful as well even if they liked to be called Social Democrats rather than Socialists.
Milwaukee, the largest city run by Socialists, circa 1910, ranked #12th in US populated cities while Bridgeport ranked 49th despite being 25 years older.
As of 2020 Milwaukee is nearly 5 times area & 4 times population of Bridgeport 2020 US Census 96.81 vs 19.38 sq. mi. & 592,649 vs.148, 654 population respectively.
However, tools with each cities names a Bridgeport milling machine I'm sure will cost >>> any Milwaukee tool.
Pretty cool concept, I'd much more prefer our country had a decentralized government giving cities and states the freedom to govern their citizens however the public sees fit. That way laws requested and needed in California dont effect people in Texas or New York

I couldn't agree more, however, there are some issues like gun control that have to be national in order to be effective. That said, I agree, it's crazy for people in Alaska to live by laws that work well in New York City.

It is long past the time that the American people learned the difference between Socialism and Communism.
You're so right. Some of us know why most American people don't know the difference...social engineering created by the likes of Rockefeller and Ford Foundations. Socialism doesn't work for the rich; it robs them of their excessive profits and schemes, because it forces them to become unwilling partners in society's wellbeing, keeps regulations in check and creates fairness and equity. God forbid!
@@GladysAlicea right the difference is socialism comes first, kills a ton of people, then communism moves in and kills the rest.
Well historically speaking, without the strong basis of capitalism, no socialistic views can be progressed. Modern day successful “socialistic” countries like the Northern European countries aren’t socialist societies, they are capitalistic societies with some socialistic policies. All modern day “Communistic” countries are all socialistic countries because according to Marx’s theory, only the final stage where “no money exist” and “everybody get what they want and contribute as they can” can be called a communistic society, every “communist” country now therefore is still a socialist country, and they are all terrible.

What 3 qualities does a person have that can be given away, but never taken?
Honour - Integrity - Compassion -
You lose one, the other 2 are lost as well -
Good leaders lead by previous Example, Common Sense, and Integrity - Too often those in power focus on how to take advantage of the system they supposedly represent - The voting public tends to focus on the rhetorical showmanship presented by the candidate instead of the actual qualifications needed for that office and usually regret that decision -
On those qualities, everyone is born into inherently equally.
Then, the struggle in life is to keep those principles for a better world, against those who wantonly spurn those ideals.
who told you that ?
Excellent points
None of that matters anymore because you get rewarded for if ignoring those qualities. I think a lot of that has to do with todays socialist movement. Social programs, working with capitalism, sounds like a Social Democracy. I think this is what most people in America that support Socialism think of.
Or other people think it's paying 60% tax from your earnings for other people's stuff and another 25% sales tax like in the "socialized countries " so you get to keep only 15% of your earnings
Sounds great if you know about that
Sounds great also when people work fast food at those countries and make 25 bucks an hour but after taxes it's acutely nothing and a big Mac meal over there is over 20 bucks so after working all day and after taxes you can buy one big Mac meal

Except most socialists don’t like to work
finally found someone saying this, it is very misleading and even lazy to say socialism is BIG GOVERNMENT, when the state is only a temporary tool. Its all about workers.
@@gpcampello sorry but that’s not going to work. Only the inexperienced could think it could. Any organization worth a damn needs a hierarchy. This includes businesses, countries, families, etc. Someone needs to be in control over decisions that need to be followed so that chaos is avoided. Without someone in control, nobody would follow the socialist rules of when, where, how and why to work, and they definitely won’t follow how much, and what they deserve to get compensated. No one will work harder because the community is short in supply and they certainly won’t take less for community either.
Socialist pretend their beliefs are righteous cause they keep their comrades in mind. Bs. What socialists really think is that they’ll get more rations for less work once their government is in place. The idea is that their comrades will do the work they don’t want to. Problem is that all socialists think this and shortages will start just like it is now. Eventually, they take the guns out, lock the borders and force people to work.
There can be forms of socialism with government ownership, but that's not the only form, it's just a theoretical concept of a working class government acting on behalf of the workers in that case, that is what many past Socialist countries had, but there were ones like Yugoslavia and such.
A couple of 100 years behind that small island, that had major changes with the treatment of its workers etc, sewage problems in London got sorted when the upper crust people in the houses of Parliament couldn't take the smell anymore, so it then got sorted, around the late 1800s

In the UK the NHS has its faults but is a great system of medicine in which everyone is looked after from cradle to grave. In the US they call this social medicine; if you don't work for a large corporation and can't afford huge insurance premiums, then you suffer or die.

I think communitarianism might fit the label better.
ROFL We know how it works. We are living it.
are you serious
@@maoistapessimista please wake up. yes. socialism is on all government official.
ROFL you're exactly the type of person that has no idea what Socialism is.
@@blackr0se Are you braindead or am i missing something? I think socialism means a planned closed economy controlled by the state, not a neoliberal free market jungle that favours billionaires over the homelessness crisis
@@maoistapessimista controlled by the people
I havent watched it yet. And I will edit if my mind changes after. Socialism always works when its backed up by Capitalism. Now let me go watch.
I’m excited to see what you have to say
@@chrisboyer2195
I’m not.
Couldn’t care less.
So far, seems that Milwaukee invented modern society! Whodathunkit??
Many kinds of government can be successful IF, IF, the politicians entrusted with power run their constituencies with honesty, integrity and compassion. However, there are virtually no systems of government that can succeed when corruption, dishonesty, and spite for your constituents are your characteristics. This is getting to be a severe problem in the US; the voters keep wondering what structure will make the system better, when in reality, none of them will succeed with people like the Washington establishment running things.
That's a very wise analysis, of the situation; however, the problem with Socialism and particularly of the Marxist variety is that, it's also based upon an atheistic rejection of God and morality ( in favor of some vague notion of Marxist Materialism)...
It’s more like the Hulu for history
Too bad those days are over, In Milwaukee Socialism did great things
It was not socialism.
I hope this isn't another hit peice on Socialism; I'ts tiresome watching Capitalism blame it's failures on Socialism.
*_SOVIET UNION: "HOLD MY STATE PRODUCED BEER."_*
And vice versa lol. Capitalism is far more successful than socialism is.
@@darthsilversith667 we could just blend the two, first we have to get everyone to pay their fair share of taxes
@@robi6317 What is a fair share?
@@CodeineRadick whatever their tax bracket is. right now billionaires live off of loans not salary therefore they can avoid income taxes altogether, otherwise they'd prob pay 30-50%
