    I was there for the winter of 76 and part of 77. The first winter electricity came to town. It didn't change much except a couple of light bulbs. I rented a sand floor palapa for a few pesos. I had arrived by bicycle and it was very handy for getting to Pochutla for veggies on market days. They installed a federales outpost in Puerto angel in the second year and that really changed the feeling of freedom. It was very nice to see the town and what it has become. thanks for the video.

    Stayed at Hotel Gloria in spring of1979. Gloria's was the only "hotel" on the west headland of the beach -- actually just a collection of a few large huts. On the opposite eastern headland was a small 20 room hotel. On the beach were only two
    small huts that sold beer and tacos --nothing else, just wild horses running up and down the beach
    In 1979 beer was 3 pesos or 30 cents each. Made several saves in surf of swimmers in trouble in the two days I stayed.

      Wow! Those must have been the days!! Zipolite has changed but not so much that it would feel alienating to you. The food offer is much larger and some places still offer a beer for four Pesos. The spirit is still the same as back then we would guess.

    Your videos are so nice! I was at Zipolite in 1974, and my, what a different place it was. I'd been traveling in Mexico and had heard about this hippie sort of beach on the edge of nowhere. I was staying in beautiful Oaxaco and I and a young Italian man I'd met decided to see Zipolitie for ourselves. We made it down to the dimple of a port called Puerto Angel, and then had to walk the mile or so to Zipolite. It was a dusty and unpaved road that wound through scrubby foliage past the occasional hut until we arrived at the beach. There was very little there. At the north end on the hills was some kind of a retreat and dotted along the beach were a few cabanas and simple restaurants. Our accommodation was a cabana made of sticks with a thatched roof, a dirt floor and two hammocks. The cost was $2.00 per week. This really was the edge of nowhere and felt like it. Mexico had a third of the population then and the coast road south ended at Pochutla about twenty miles away.
    One of my fondest memories is having dinner at one of the restaurants . The table consisted of four posts pounded into the sand with a crude wooden top. We drank cervezas and ate delicious fish steaks while watching the sun set over the Pacific. It was idyllic. One night a small pig and a dog got into a fight under our table while we ate. We were told that the name Zipolite means "the waves of death" in the native language. If true it's very descriptive since there's a strong and dangerous current not far offshore that has claimed many lives.
    I went back in 1996 and found it to be very different. A whole town had sprung up behind the beach and the beach itself was an unbroken line of cabanas and restaurants. The dusty road was now paved with buses and taxis speeding past. But Zipolite's bohemian character still remained and nudity was common. From your video it still looks like a charming place. It has changed greatly but you seemed to enjoy it, which tells me there's a sense of mystery and allure that I experienced for the first time so long ago.

    • @TheWayWeSawIt
      @TheWayWeSawIt  6 лет назад +1

      Dear Demera, thank you very much for your comment, it has so much interesting details of Zipolite. It must have been such a great adventure back then to discover the place. As you say, it has changed tremendously by now, new accommodation, new restaurants, new roads, all that kind of stuff that happens when a new spot is discovered. The character though still remains, its laid back attitude, the acceptance of all beings, the relaxed attitude...
      If you look at our video "People of Zipolite", you might grasp some of it, the way the current locals describe it. We were intrigued by the whole place and its past, the ambiance it radiates. We came for 10 days and stayed for 2 months. It somehow took us and we couldn't get it loose. Our blogs try to make hommage to that even if it is not easy to describe.
      This kind of development you describe is unfortunately common in many places that get "discovered" and become popular so it will be impossible to relive the same experiences as in the past. However, if the spirit remains and does not get destroyed, many others may make their own experiences in the same spirit like you back then.
      Thank you for watching.

      Thank you for your reply and comments. I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to share this memory. When I returned in 1996 to Puerta Angel I dreamed I'd once more walk the dusty road to Zipolite and find my cabana, just as I left it! I realized that was not to be, but I found a free spirit still remained. I particularly enjoyed your video about the people of Zipolitie. It's still a special place. Happy traveling!

    Hi guys, me again. Very nice videos by the way, I enjoy them. Thank you for showing my country of birth, Mexico, in a good light. Now, on to my five cents about Zipolite. Zipolite has been internationally popular since the 60s. It attained popularity when on 12 November 1966 the best place in Mexico to see a total solar eclipse was from there, from Punta Cometa to be exact. Such an event attracted the interest of the general public and the press, and consequently, it fomented the tourist development of this part of the state of Oaxaca.
    Zipolite has always been a holiday destination for travelers on a budget and hippies. It's always been very popular with young backpackers and surfers and also has, for many decades, been clothing optional. Gloria Johnson is one of the founders and who's part of the history of Zipolite. Daughter of an American mother and a Mexican father, moved to the area over 50 years ago and married a local. 30 years ago, she founded Shambhala a rustic and ecological natural refuge located on the slope overlooking Zipolite. She started the nudist trend in that area. Unfortunately, like with the rest of Mexico's coastal towns, Zipolite has been changing and becoming more mainstream to accommodate a more international clientele with their specific demands. Also I read an article that a big construction mogul has illegally, by bribeing one of Gloria's long time employees and the authorities, stolen the property from Gloria Johnson in order to build an Acapulco like hotel complex. Anyway, I could go on and on. Cheers guys!

    • @TheWayWeSawIt
      @TheWayWeSawIt  7 лет назад +1

      Dear Julio, thank you so much for this detailed information. We sincerely hope that the new owner of Shambala will not manage to pursue his plan and that the place remains as it is. Zipolite has a very special vibe in it, which you can see in the "People of Zipolite" video we made. Let's hope it will keep this. In any case, we have decided to go back later this year.

    • @skanlat7926
      @skanlat7926 7 лет назад +2

      You're welcome guys! Just for your information, this is the latest news about Gloria Johnson, founder of Zipolite: By means of tricks, abuse of trust, falsification of signatures and omission of community representatives; an individual, allied with a group of Argentine businessmen, intend to divest Gloria Johnson Ramirez, a woman of advanced age and founder of Zipolite Beach, a property located in an area of great value within the mythical nudist beach.
      Backed in an apocryphal document with which it guarantees a supposed assignment of rights of a property of little more than one thousand square meters property of Gloria Johnson Ramírez; Juan Martinez Ramirez, a former trustworthy associate of the victim, illegally sold the land to businessman Daniel Cohen Sabban, now presumed the current owner of the land teamed up with Marcelo Barbas Larrarte and Juan Carlos Malazzo Muti, of Argentine origin, and owner of the prolific hotel and restaurant called: El Alquimista Yoga Spa - located next to the property in question. They sent a group of people to dismantle a hut located in Gloria's property, without a document that would support their actions and without giving Gloria the opportunity to defend herself or to present any type of proof or legal claim to the land.
      Desperate, Gloria, who owns the rustic Shambhala guesthouse on the hillside, explained that everything stems from the abuse of trust of her former worker Juan Martinez, who after working as her "right hand" for more than 20 years, he took advantage of the fact that she had commissioned him to take care of the property, due to the fact that since 2007 the property has been desired by the owners of El Alquimista Yoga Spa.
      Juan Martinez abused the trust Gloria placed in his hands "I made a deal with him (Juan Martínez) through a letter with witnesses, which was not a cession, to take care of the land because I needed to defend it because there I have my biodigesters, cistern and other belongins, he (Juan Martinez) had to protect it so that my neighbors, who have tried in the past to take ownership of it, with the complicity of the communal representatives of that time, but didn't succeed, " She said.
      The 76-year-old Gloria, who is no longer able to move with ease because of her age, regretted that instead of looking after her property, her "unconditional" employee sold her property illegally by falsifying her signature and documents, for several million pesos to these three businessmen.
      After mentioning that she has already taken legal action against these individuals to recover her property, she detailed that the property that now is coveted by the group of businessmen is in an agrarian litigation because in 2012 another ex-employee Juan Flores Ramírez tried to steal that land and other portions of her property.
      "Although the Agrarian Unitary Court has already given me reason about the legitimate possession of my land, the litigation is still ongoing, and in such a case, it is impossible for that property to be sold," she said.
      Since the property regime in San Pedro Pochutla (district where Zipolite is located) is communal, and the land is therefore non-transferable, sales between individuals are unusual. It is therefore necessary that when assignments of rights are made by land, the Commissariat of Communal Property is the one who issues the new acts of possession.
      In this case, the role of the current communal organ of San Pedro Pochutla, headed by Eutiquio Ricardez, who at the very least, and without a request from Gloria Johnson, issued the document of possession in the name of businessman Daniel Cohen.
      "They tell me that they could not know that the signature they presented to them as mine in the document for sale, was false. I am a recognized community member, I lived in Zipolite for 45 years and my husband was the owner of all these lands, " She said.
      According to locals, the group of entrepreneurs who own the Alquimista Yoga Spa, have also acquired several properties on the beach, with great value, not only in Zipolite but also in Mazunte.
      Next time you go guys, it'd be very interesting to try to interview Gloria Johnson. Cheers guys and enjoy Mexico!
