- While the world is witnessing one of the biggest Elections exercise, let's spare a thought for those who have been pushed to the margins of justice, conversation & society. They don't think of democracy when it is a trend to do so. Rather, they are the ones who believe in the Constitution of India and are always ready to fight to keep its spirit alive.
To push the boundaries of RUclips's political content landscape, I sat down with Dr Banojyotsna Lahiri, PhD Scholar, activist and partner of Dr Umar Khalid who has been in jail for almost 4 years.
The conversation went from the details of Umar's case to his Amravati speech, from the media's role to public defamation. Banojyotsna also shared some beautiful stories about their 'long-distance relationship' and her weekly meetings with Umar in Tihar jail.

I was a contemporary in jnu politics with him. I have had spats with him. Almost went to blows with him. I was in SFI defending CPIM . He was then in DSU often criticising CPIM and SFI. We have spent time sharing cigarettes on the sidelines of protests sometimes. One thing I can tell about this guy is - He is seedha saadha. True to what he believes. Very good at heart to befriend. Least aggressive in personal life. There cannot be an universe where he could become terrorist or pro-jihadi or JAishe Mohammed or whatever. The Last thing he could do is be anti-national. At best he could be anti-corporate or sometimes too anti-development or industries. But never an anti-national.

This was a much needed interview! The injustice with Umar and how he was made into a villain with evidences overwhelmingly suggesting otherwise would be a case study for the future. I saw Umar in JNU multiple times, and once we crossed paths, I gave him a smile (because I knew him from TV after 2016 JNU protests) and he smiled back. Banojyotsna was my facebook friend (not pen friends, I used to read and give likes to her posts), till I left FB for good. Just felt like sharing these random details.

Samdish words fail me in expressing the feelings, but i say you are the voice for the voiceless, a beacon for the hopeless, bringing into light injustice, inequality into light, it needs guts to bring out the stories like this, Banojyotsana you are a woman of worth and our prayers are with you.
It is inspiring to see someone face such immense challenges with a smile, knowing they chose this struggle for themselves and their country, even when an easier path was available. 👏👏
The video of Ravish Kumar about Umer khalid had me in tears.It was so beautiful and yet so thought provoking.we need more journalists like Ravish Kumar and samdish who become voices of those who have no one to speak for them.not journalist who are interested in what people wear ,eat and do.
