Casio A168W Real vs Fake! Genuine and Counterfeit Comparison by Casio Watchers

- Today we do something different - we compare a genuine Casio A168W to a counterfeit. How does the fake one standup to the real one?

It blows my mind why someone would counterfeit a 25$ watch
Thats exactly how the fraud works they think no-one would double check the watch cuz they know its j a 25 dollar watch why would someone copy it so they sell the fake one in the the price of the real watch
there is no marketing fees, they just produce. They know it will sell well, if they price much cheaper
In some countries people can't afford a 25$ watch. When I was in Malaysia a lot of people wore fake G-Shocks and also a fake Casio World Timer (OG Price 30$). Casio is a popular brand in South East Asia and I went to an official dealer there and the price for a real Casio was 1.5 times the price than in Europe. I don't know how the economics work in this regard but yeah that's the world. Also wearing a Seiko is like wearing a Rolex (even when it's mostly produced in Malaysia)
Because they have profits 😂
Because there are third world countries. High crime rate, poverty and wars. Even Casios are luxury. I wouldn't pay a month's worth of grocery for a watch that would probably get damaged, or stolen a few miles from my house.
However fake Casios are terrible, wanna have the looks not the price? Better buy off brands like SKMEI or Sanda. They're not the best but their better and cheap.
Also, the word 'Alarm Chrono' is lower on the fake, whereas it's more balance in the centre of the word 'Casio'.
Right. I thought that was the most obvious tell.
Good catch
As you point out, the genuine Casio screws are a combination flat head and cross head, and it should also be noted that the cross head is not Phillips, but JIS, whereas the fake screws have Phillips heads. (A Phillips screwdriver won't fit into a JIS head securely, which is probably why they have the option of using a flat head driver!)
Very useful video. The only note : the new most recent versione has the mark “wr” so there’s no any “u” on the bottom of the case.
no U mark is only available in 91W
@@Breakingbottlesasmr849not true, my A168 has a small u
Don't have u or wr, is mine fake?
@@shrikhan2215 old or new? Where was it purchased
I've bought one from Walmart which passes the sniff test, but with a few differences. No letter "U" on the face anywhere, and the country of origin on the back face (Thailand) mismatches the country of origin on the clasp (Cambodia). Other than that though, everything you pointed out looks right. Thank you for a great review!
I have the same one but got mine from Amazon, it has a slight difference on the bottom where it says "Water resist" with a "WR" in between the two words. However I'm still sure it's real because all the other things he pointed out passed the test
@@noebuentello6192 i have a different model, its a la760, and i bought it at a casio store, but the model online doesn't have the [WR] sign, and mine does :/ but i mean i bought it at the Casio store so it needs to be real, right?
@@noebuentello6192 I think you have a different model. yours is the Casio A168WA-1W.
@@raquelberger7909
I have the same one with the wr and got it from Amazon and I almost return mine after watching this video but it seems like there is a classic version with the U and our version with the WR
Apparently the one with the WR is the 2021 revision
Another little telltale: the red dots next to the words "mode" and "light" on the watch face are not quite in line with the words to keep them from getting too close to the line circling the whole watch face. In fact, if you look really carefully you'll see that the words "mode" and "light" are aligned with the line and not with each other. On the right side of the watch the words "start/stop" are slightly curved to stay equidistant from this line as well. Both the version in the video and the newer "made in Thailand" version have these details.
The counterfeit model does not have any of this, in fact the word "Electroluminescence" does not line up with the edge of the blue box around it, looking shoddy.
This is the kind of detail good graphic designers care about, someone took the time to line things up perfectly. You have to commend Casio for this level of attention to detail on what's a very low cost product.
Thank you, just about to buy it, this helped a ton!! - Also realised colour in Original has darker shade blue 👍
LOL I just got one off Amazon for $25 and I'm over here sweating comparing to the video like I someone sold me a Super Clone Submariner 😂
Interesting review and comparison. I have a Casio "knockoff" of the A158W made by the Accutime Watch Corp sold at Walmart's in Canada. It actually runs quite well but it does have a poorer LCD when looked at from an angle unlike the real Casio. It also has a little better backlight.
I was wondering the main downsides of the fakes as they are already cheap
The EL glow on the fake is very nice.
Why are there knockoffs of an $18 watch??
Is what I initially thought when I first started watching this video, but after thinking for a little bit I realized that it's for the exact reason why you purchased the watch, nobody expects such a cheap watch to be a counterfeit, so they just buy it up quickly without expecting it
It's good that you turned a bad situation into a good one and made this comparison review. I hope you reach 4000 watch hours soon
bad situation? how so? You got a fake casio quartz that functions exactly the same lol. Bet he complained to the seller and got a refund then turned around and made this video for $
Never trust an Ottoman...!!!
At this moment 14:40 , the numbers in the fake watch appear overlapping with each other (the effect of the numbers being turned off)While it does not exist in real watch This is one of the ways to differentiate between the real and the fake I think
I am a Casio collector and a member of your face book forum l noticed a glaring difference between the fake A168 and the genuine one - the blue border around the edges of the face of the fake is to pale a shade of blue and is to thick and uneven also there is a blue backround behind the word ElectroLuminescence it is far thicker and a lighter shade of blue then on the real version to me it stands out a mile thankyou for taking the time and trouble to make such a useful tutorial l personally never by casios from eBay it is infested with fake Casio’ and Casio never have their watches cased in Malaysia it is always done in Thailand or China and you can take that to the bank !!! Robyn Griffin Sydney
hi Robyn Griffin Sydney
I have the one on the right and thanks to those details you pointed out in this video I know my casio watch is genuine I appreciate it 👍
Great to hear that 👌🏻
Thank you mate for information. My a168 will arrive soon. i will look these differences.
Lot of research and effort i must say. Thank you.
Thank you for a great review. You’ve earned a new sub.
I just realized that a "Casio" watch that I have had for at least ten years is really a fake. I am more amused than disappointed as this fake has been working flawlessly for so long that I still got an amazing performance and longevity per penny. I also have quite a few cheap Chinese watches over the years that have been good looking workhorses. To me it feels like a win to find a $3 - $7 knock off that works as well as something ten times or more in price. Sure they have no value to someone like a collector but if you just want to know what time it is and like having a variety of watches to choose from when getting dressed every morning they are a win.
How did u find out it was fake
@@bioza7173 yeah, how. this video?
@@bioza7173 Because it didn't tell the time for you, you had to read the time yourself.....that is the difference with a genuine watch and a counterfeit one.
Why would someone fake a Casio is what I’m wondering, it’s literally the most affordable watch on the market.
@@conbro0985 Big market. Tons of these have been sold. And because they are not expensive people don't pay much attention when buying it.
I got a fake 168 from ebay which I knew was fake. It was only £10.50 and says Japan on the rear. The interesting thing was it passes many of the tests - the back screws were correct, the display is correct, the light comes on and off instantaeously, all but the 'u' are correct in the display. The 3 main giveaways were the electroluminescence was a bit brighter, the buttons are less comfortable and the case appears to be actually made out of metal! tbh I am pretty happy with it as the genuine 168 was a basic no frills watch. Oh and the other giveaway which is on your watch too - the drilled lugs on the real watch for ease of strap changing!
More or less my case, I got a good clone too, it seems, just the bracelet is a little ugly in the back but the rest is perfect. Even my buttons are OK.
Just reading your post now, I did wonder why "Japan" was stamped on one of the brace links, and the writing on the back of the watch literally needs a magnifying glass.!!!
.
I expect to be contacting eBay tomorrow...
I might be wrong, but you might actually have a legit japan model that was defective, like it has a real metal case iirc, but that's a real lucky find even if a fake
they are both fking made in china.....how is one fake when they are both crap.
@@ultimatedouchebag6760 try buying an iphone from Wish, then compare it with a real one........they're both made in china!
fantastic review
The Casio tag on the band the left one, was definitely done with a laser
I bought one today from a genuine casio store here in Dubai. It checks all the marks except for the “u”. I asked the sales person at the store and she had no clue about it ever existing and it didn’t matter because it was the casio store. I believe there has been a design change on all or some models. Mine is made in china.
Just bought mine and i also dont have it. What a release to hear someone say that ahaha
Well in Dubai I think U is missing and Cambodia is on the strap..
@@chiragsomaraj5121 yes but why? i have the u missing and camboida like u say
@@zkan87 u or no u they are original only..
Bro I was not to go to Walmart and flip out thank God I checked the comments lol cuz when I seen mine didn't have a u I was like damn walmart out here scamming w fake cheap watches🤣🤣
THANK YOU SO MUCH ...FOR SHARING THIS INFO...
I also noticed in your comparison of the lettering, on the fake above the display where it says Electroluminescence and Alarm Chrono both of those are also slanted down at the right, its as if in the printing process all the crooked printing was done at the same time maybe.
Another one: Compare the "Electro Luminecense" logos
Well, I just bought a A168W; and according this video it's a mixture of fake/real stuff 😂
I paid £13 for it from an eBay seller with thousands of reviews.
- I don't see the little "U" you mention, but I don't see it on my watch nor on your watch....
- the back of the watch says Japan, the clasp adjuster just says stainless steel - the widening for release isn't wide, but the arrow is stamped and quite noticeable, and so is the Casio writing on the front of the clasp, it's stamped.
- the bracelet felt a bit sharp on it's sides, however the watch itself is one of my favorites to wear, you forget you have it on. I would argue it is as if not more comfortable than the bracelet off my Seamaster 300
The blue backlight goes of immediately after release the button, the buttons are very easy to use and if I hold down the right button, it displays after a few seconds the word "CASIo" - it's a lower case "O" because it uses the second markers to do that.
The case finish is also very smooth, no jagged lines.
Either in the last 4 years they got better with fakes, or it simply just depends where they make this watches.
Thanks a million
Also, the case has access holes for the strap spring bars on the original and not the fake one.
Thanks mate, very informative
Maybe Casio makes it in different factories. No one but Casio can make a profit on such a cheap watch.
also, the windows of digital display of fake is not aligned as the real one: bottom right align to letter D (MODE), and bottom left aligns to letter T (START) or, the gap between ElectroLuminescence line and the gap between ILLUMINATOR is different in spacing... I wished to see the led light difference too
Thank u for the video, very useful
Very useful great video thanks!
It would have been interesting if you had opened the watch to compare the modules. Good work and thanks for this video.
I have one which says Made in Thailand at the back of the watch case, but the bracelet says Cambodia. Got it from Amazon Japan.
thanks for this!
The words 'Alarm Chrono' look much lower next to 'Casio' on the fake.
Thanks for this information 🙏
Thanks for this video.
I believe these two are both genuine, but made in different countries at obviously different quality standards, for different regions... Some clothing brands do this too. Different materials, different finnishes or stitches. Nobody puts so much an effort in counterfeiting a $25 watch.
The counterfeit is definitely a counterfeit. They even fake the F91W which is Casio’s cheapest watch. It’s unbelievable, but they’ll fake it if they can make money from it.
Great analysis, pal. I can’t help wondering how many people you disappointed by it :). Just a small add on from me. Casio have omitted the use of the small letter u at the bottom of this wach face recently. Original A168 don’t have it anymore. Also, there is a very simple trick to check if you’ve got the original or fake - press and hold the start/stop button for 5 seconds. The screen should display CASIo word. 99% fakes fail to replicate that feature. Cheers!
The updated 168 has a WR on the face now which now confuses people and makes them think they have a fake as it doesn’t look like the original. As for holding the buttons, that check has been obsolete for a while now as the fakes have been able to do that for a few years. Previously the fake modules couldn’t do that, but now most can.
@@casiowatchers7511 good to know. I have the original bought from the official Casio store half a year ago, passes all the tests in your video + has a CASIo word displayed when the button is pressed.
I'm holding what I now realise is a fake A168. They have fixed a few things! Number size reduced and aligned, buttons easier to press, light goes off instantly. All the text is straight. The things now giving it away, no 'u'. Screws on the back, and time keeping, and stiff clasp adjust. It says made in Malaysia. Strap aerial no is S-5190V. £10 from eBay. I'll go to a reputable dealer in future.
Thanks for sharing 👌🏻
Think they are variants as well, from different factories located in different countries, released over many years.
Thank you, I bought a Casio A168 online eBay, it was a decent price, it is a genuine version
Thanks for The information 👍good Job 👏👏👏
Why would you make fake A168W watches? The real ones litterly cost like $20. There is like no margain, would make sense if it was a rolex but damn.
My thoughts exactly, but they fake most Casios. Even F-91W which is a watch that costs less than £10
I think it has to do with the amount of watches sold yearly to this day. I think in the case of F91W they're still being sold in millions each year.
No ultra fancy features -> easier to copy - > harder to identify as a fake -> more units sold.
They trade margin for volume. As long as they keep shifting them, those few pennies of profit will add up.
Edit: With that said... you still have to wonder why.
If they make just a 1-2 dollars profit, its worth it to them when you consider thousands are sold. Plus so few would bother to ask for a refund.
Well fake watch sellers buy them for
thank you so much
because its so cheap that people assume it will be original, and if its fake, they wont bother anyway as long as it tick time
This is very informative. Mine is A158W but it is more or less the same as 168.
Get an A168. I always got the A158W because I have smaller wrists but then got myself an A168. They are the perfect size. I have every style of the A168 now and I love them. The gun-metal black one is awesome!
Thanks for sharing! But do you have a separate review for the A158? Original vs. Counterfeit? Thanks.
No sorry I don’t own those watches
You helped me in a buy! Thank you so much!
The casio of the seller doesn't have the little U.. but it seems legit.
Casio Watchers is there an email where I can write to you?
great information that was very useful.
Great vid. I am doing my homework on this watch as am buying one off Etsy ( which I am now certain is genuine) thanks heaps :-)
Great video. Mine says made in China on the case and made in Cambodia on the clasp. I have also noticed that when using 24H mode and when the time is between 22:00-22:59, you can see that the 2 on the left is a little smaller. Is that normal?
Thanks. Yeh that’s not something I can say I’ve noticed and unsure why it would be smaller. If it was an issue though then there’d be other issues with the watch.
i have used this watch for 5 years but still want to have one more time.
I see one that sell on amazon and none of them look to have the U, but everything seem to be original
Just bought one for my son. Thanks so much man an I indeed bought the real one.
thx bought one from ebay ES and let it send over to NL.
I can now identify it as a total ORIGINAL 👍 I'm happy. Thx for sharing this valuable lesson, never new about the "u".
*thank you for saving my money & time, brother* ❤
Hello friend, great video. Something very obvious is the holes to insert the metal band to the face. Regards.
Good comparison. I'm wearing my A168 now. Such a comfortable watch to wear and a good time keeper. The fakes are no good. I bet it loses a lot of time as well.
I'm just waiting for my Casio F105W to arrive now from the USA to UK. I can't wait..
Cheers. Interestingly, it gained time rapidly before the battery went.
Does the metal paint wear off in longer usage?
@chaitunani6381 I've had a Casio A168 a couple of years now, and it hasn't peeled off yet.. Although I don't wear it a lot these days.. I'm always careful not to get it wet.
Good vid. Fake is also missing the strap pinholes in the side of the watch face.
I got a fake 158 by accident. Didn't say casio. But font is larger, light stays on. Strap doesn't feel as smooth but maybe not so bad. Will rock it anyway
I unwittingly bought a fake off that auction site. Easily done and only noticed the many differences when it was in front of me. To be honest I am pleased enough with it and just use it as any other watch I have and that is telling the time. The seller looked genuine with 100% rating on the site so can easily be caught out. So the watch looks good enough but quality and fit not up to Casio standard. Keeps good time and wears good. Water resistant is name only!! Can’t understand why fake what’s already a cheap Casio watch in the first place…
I also bought a counterfeit, the back plate had no rounded edges and looked like an octagon that did not fit right. The backlight only lit up the lefthand edge like a F91-W.
Brilliant thanks
great to know
Having owned a Casio A158 since 2009 I knew there was something wrong with this new A168.. for starters I couldn’t even get the adjustable bracelet set, I couldn’t snap it down no matter how hard I pushed. Also the bracelet should be floppy and flexible. Said it was made in Japan too, kind of a red flag as they stopped making them there didn’t they?
The Japan COO isn’t always an indicator as unless you know the date it was made it won’t mean much. But the other things you’ve said are some of the red flags for sure. I’m sure anyone who watches this video will be able to tell/avoid fakes in future.
@@casiowatchers7511 it also did the 2 second light thing as well.
Good video but you forgot to show what the light looks like in the dark so we can see.
What about the blue surround and background colour of the word ElectroLuminescence on the fake and the purplish colour of the genuine one. Also, I guess the factory will now be able to make the copies even better
Very vnice video!
Casio
The A168WA-1 in Guatemala is $45 US dollars, also mine reads "WR" in between Water Resist.
Mine also has the initials "WR", I bought it yesterday for $34 US dollars at a department store. I saw this A168 variant in a video on Teddy Baldassarre's channel.
Very informative. First thing I did after was check mine. Everything checked out as legit but my case back says made in Thailand while the buckle or locking piece has made in Cambodia. Neighboring countries though so probably how the supply chain is over there. Interesting though
Glad yours checked out and you found the video useful. Very interesting about the Thailand/Cambodia stamps - I agree with you though and believe that certain countries of manufacture will match and others may be neighbouring. If there is no country noted at all on the strap then that could raise eyebrows, unless the watch was purchased on the secondary market and the previous owner swapped the strap.
Mine as well
mine too. same Thailand and Cambodia combination
I also have a genuine one and it also says "Thailand" on case back and "Cambodia" on the strap.
Does the metal paint comes off in longer usage for 168?
I just bought one, seems to function and work OK.! However, I noted that it said "Made in Japan" stamp in (presumably Steel) on the bracelet, the writing on the watch literally requires a magnifying glass to read, (I have one, plus a jewellers magnifying glass that is 16x, so I can see almost anything tiny+ report back)...
.
I just bought mine off eBay (shi'ite packaging), could have easily been damaged (wasn't) for £15, the packaging was literally a tiny sheet of card that said "casio", some bubblewrap, (from which the watch escaped during travel and into the rest of the packaging), a single layer bubblewrap paper bag, in which the watch head was supposedly encased (and wasn't), and this was nowhere near enough packaging to protect the whole watch.!!!... Thinking about it, I should have taken a video of the unboxing as evidence, ( I do for PC stuff worth vastly more), for this it may have been a mistake to not have...
I didn’t think I’d have to check for fakes on such a cheap watch they’re going in the bin damn eBay
I too are a sad observer of the back of casio watches it turns out😂 Always have loved these watches, thanks to your video, was pleased to learn my $20 eBay casio is actually genuine.
You can also press down the start/stop button for 3sec and it Will say CASIO on the watch.
The words Eletro Luminescence has a smaller gap between them, and the print is thinner on the fake. Also, on the fake Alarm Chrono falls below the CASIO name it is level on the real one, but you could probably judge better from some photos. Than a video recording. The other problem one has when buying online is these fakers use photos of the real item at the selling point. hardly ever show the back of the watch or a serial number. You only find out when it arrives and like you had something to compare it to. Very informative video well done
Hey I have a question I have the Casio A159W it has all the original marks you pointed out except one, there are scratches or lines in the Casio logo on the strap lock as you mentioned I also saw some other A159W reviews even they had the lines in the strap logo so what is going on?
Sounds like it could be part of the production process/production error maybe 🤷🏼♂️
4:50 On the slightly updated watches that have the ' water WR resist ' text instead of just ' water resist ' there isn't a u anymore on genuine watches
Very true. Casio surprised us all with that facelift update out of the blue
Yes I’ve bought the A168 on amazon in India and I’m surprised to see WR On it lol
Are you sure you don’t have the model confused with the A158W ?
If anyone is confused as to why they'd create fake $25 USD watches? In 'Pricegougia' this exact watch is priced at $109 AUD ($71.73 USD). That's why!
even amazon is not save, third parties sellers mixed under normal amazon selling , "sold by bla bla send by amazon" and you get sometimes a fake watch ,without box and instruction book
Where do you guys buy real ones? Seriously. I have tried looking everywhere...
Appreciate all the insights and work that went into this video.
I do wonder, however, if the one on the left is indeed a fake. Instead could this be a change in the manufacturing process and countries where the watch is produced? If Casio has taken that approach to reduce costs, that would make sense to me. And thus more a quality control issue manufactured and assembled at a different plant than before, than a matter of counterfeit. Not produced to the higher standard as it appears it could have been in China?
Just a thought and my own speculation of what may have occurred.
It’s a fair point, but this is definitely a counterfeit and not produced by Casio.
Casio watches sold after 2022 does not seem to have the little letter U anymore.
Anothrr giveaway is at the top, casio brand and "alarm" , the words and their alignment, theybate nit as aligned and with same sizes in the counterfeit.
Great effort and video. But even though we have watched the video, unless we have a genuine one next to the fake, it would be hard to compare. Thank you for your time ! Loved the video.
Thanks, but what you’re saying is not true at all. If you only have a fake one then first of all you’d can compare it to the real one in the video. Failing that, if you only have a fake one then the poor manufacturing of the case back and strap as shown in the video would be enough to tell you it’s fake.
Uffff..... She is on 🔥🔥🔥
Also...there are Casio A168 that is made in Thailand that is original with WR in the lower middle of the watches face. I believe that it is from year 2021 till present.
I bought one of these and odley enough it checks out ok with a genuine one after scrutinising against a genuine one
i suppose if you’re not a Watch collector and not to bothered about perfection you wouldn’t notice anything wrong so really not a bad functioning watch for the monies
Hi, do you know if there's a casio retro that has the option to leave the light on (like, the button would toggle it on or off, instead of having to press it). I've seen one but I think it was a fake
Hi, the only Casios that I can think of that have a light that can stay on are the G Shocks with auto-illuminate feature where you lift your wrist up and the light comes on if it’s dark enough. Other than that, you have to press the button to illuminate.
The Casio Royale (AE-1200WH) has a backlight that stays on for 1 or 3 seconds after the button is pressed.
I replaced the tiny 0805 LEDs in mine with Magenta ones
I spotted the fake from the vid thumbnail. From my personal experience, one giveaway for a fake Casio is the display. A real one has a crisp easy to read display and the cristals don't throw shadows when slightly changing the view angle
I think the counterfeit is better, aside from the strap. That a168 is a PITA because the buttons press too easily and the button to switch from 12/24 hour time and the one to get into change-time mode get accidentally pressed. I don't understand why this watch was designed with a dedicated 12/24 button anyway. Who needs to switch back and forth like that?
Some people like one or the other. If you can't change it then you are stuck with one or the other. Casio is not going to male two diff models for the different time options.
@@germanshepherd13 He meant it’s annoying to have a dedicated button that changes it so easily… clearly to solve this problem you could set the 12/24hr preference in the “set” mode only.
I'm confused mine has the thin numbers but it mismatches the country in the straps 😔
Mine has everything that the genuine one has, except for the letter U on it?
amzing! thanks; i wil ltry to get an original
is there another version for a168w? Why some got WR below illuminator mark?
Yes Casio recently released a facelift update that has WR displayed on it
I bought a A168 off of Amazon. It doesn't have a small "U" and the back says made in Thailand, while the band says Cambodia. But EVERYTHING else you talked about is as it should be on a real watch. It also came in a actual box, not a little plastic bag. Is it real?
Yeh that sounds all good. I imagine it has the WR on it as it should be the facelift update model from there now
The original one is so comfortable
