Being 42 i can remember these being very popular when i was at school, i especially remember morning assemblies where there seemed to an orchestra of hourly beeps going off within a minute due to them all being a slightly different time.
Mine is 10+ years and still going strong on the original battery. Amazing. The original strap broke and I’ve replaced it with another original. The only thing is that the little night light LED is a little too dim now with the 10+ year old battery. Fantastic quality product.
to upgrade the light, buy a skmei copy and use the lcd. its much better with viewing angles and a full screen light instead of the original side. might be worth looking at seem these are so cheap
Cool video, really surprised somebody out there would go to the trouble of counterfeiting a watch that is already super cheap to begin with, like what’s the point?
Thats probably the point, even with shipping it may cost 50p to make so if they can sell even for £5 they make a huge mark up, in some ways the mark up on cheap items may be more worth it as its small easy to shift items.
And what really boggles the mind is that the counterfeit is apparently made in Japan as apposed to China where the labor is apparently cheaper, wouldn’t you wanna make as much as possible counterfeiting an already cheap watch by using the cheapest labor? Your spending more money using Japanese labor🤷🏻♂️
You know what's weird, I used to have Casio watches when I was like 10 or 13. I haven't wore watches since until literally a week ago. Now I'm in my 30s, and I was looking at the Casio watches at walmart a week ago. The f91w cought my eye, having no idea it was the most popular one.. I bought the green one. Then I start watching yt videos. I'm hooked again
I absolutely loved this video, I like to think that disgruntled factory workers fired for routinely not meeting quality standards then banded together and formed a spite company to pump out the fakes.
I know how this works.. Casio makes the original and the copy to corner both ends of the market. Loads of companies do the same thing. They just set up other companies to sell the new copies. That's how it works and why Item like Rolex Fake are so accurate.
Vince, your video restoring an old mechanical chronometer brought me into the world of mechanical and automatic watches. Now i'm buying my first automatic watch in a few weeks. Thank you.
Think my original 80’s f91w had a plastic back in one piece with the straps. Had a few over the years. The fake one the strap fell off within a week. Didn’t beep either but had the option to enable/disable it. Excellent videos thanks.

I was telling my wife I wanted this watch, because I love it, she bought me one for Christmas, made me very happy and it's original.
Oh man I feel kind of bad because I told someone a good cheap brand of retro watch to pick up off Ebay was the Casio brand in your previous video I didn't know there were fakes("Who would make a knock off of a $12 watch?" -I had thought.). Thanks for doing this and fixing my mistake, Vince!
Im in the building trade and bought one of these fakes from ebay presuming it was an authentic as advertised, I wanted a reliable watch for work but after two days the case had cracked around the buttons in several places! I bought another from Argos this time so completely genuine and has lasted 6 months so far with no issues. Fakes have inferior materials by far.
Loved this video! Collecting and learning about CASIO and their watches/calculators is one of my favorite things. What a joy for this and the musical calculator to be back to back! Thanks a lot mate!

Mine is genuine as well (bought in 2019 on a Casio store) and came with a few differences: The backplate says made in thailand and the case it came was a display case, kind of like thos expensive watches come in. Other than that, it matches every other detail with your legit one
I've noticed that Casio has more and more items that are getting made in Thailand than in China recently. The FX-991EX Classwiz calculator I recently acquired from Tesco was made in Thailand (slightly off topic), so don't be surprised if more and more items are made in South-East Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam, the latter in which Samsung items have come from said country.
Great video. I'm 6 years and 11 months into testing my F-91W to see how long the battery lasts (Purchased 15/01/2015). Good news is looks like it will go on forever (ish). Bad news is I'm on my 3rd strap which I told Casio about and they sent my 2 new ones. Keep the videos coming mate.
Wait Casio has customer service for this? I've just replaced my band right now with a fake because an original replacement is more expensive than the watch was
Thank you. I am very grateful to you. After watching the video, I realized that my watch was fake, even though it was well made. I replaced it with an original one from the same seller
Some people say "you shouldn't buy counterfeits, there's no benefit at all to getting counterfeits!", other people say "hey, cheap spare parts for my genuine watch".
Nice comparison :) I have a different version of the Casio digital watch (Casio Illuminator 3092 W-800HG-9 from 2009) and it's still running with original battery, but the wrist band broke. Bought a replacement wrist band but that darn thing may be fake, because the pins are incompatible with that one.
Vince one thing you didn't show, is the RGB light in the fake, the light has red/green/blue solid and flashing disco option. Also If you can, I'd like to see you do a Casio F91W vs A168 They are very similar to each other. 🖖
I found out the hard way or shall I say the "easy" way depending on interpretation. I wear a watch in the shower and the fake stopped working and the lcd was messed up.
Have a Casio G-shock...really not why watching this but this guy is very thorough. Would not of noticed most of that..."DAmazon" has same crap with tool belts.
Mine seems to be genuine, because it has 98 percent of the same details as your genuine Casio. However, mine is made in Malaysia, with vertically brushed back and also there are minor differences in the movement - no writing on the back of the battery retainer.
I have 3 of these in different color themes (as genuine Casios ofcourse). Haven't come across any fake ones so far over here in scandinavia but i'm sure they've found their way here too. In this one i spotted the bright blue border as a fake immediately. Great and informative video, and yet ridicoulus to fake a dirt cheap watch. But there is a market for them or they wouldn't exist, simple as that.
you are right the original Casio was marked up as Japan, and I had an original back in the day, they were originally cross head screws, but the back plate was a lot easier to read than the fake in this video, even with wearing it for several years. the green tinge on the display is only a new thing with led lights and what became Indiglow which lite up the whole back of the screen rather than just the edges, the original had a white fillament light from what I remember, and a lot harder to see the display while wearing during the night.
I grew up with these watches and I've must owned these like 3 times atleast when I was a kid?! Now they're been K.O. or bootlegged but what's worse is that now I find out the variants I did own as a kid were fakes all along back in 1989! That's seriously disheartening here...One thing I will say is that the watchs that I did have, the light function was a whitish yellow and not green here and the version that I had did have all the legit clips on the insides as well so I don't know. I guess both the legit/fakes can change via cost cutting over 31 years?! Awesome video and I really enjoyed it!!
My dad gave me his old busted casio awhile ago, been meaning to try and fix it. Cant remember if it had a cracked lcd or just the polarizer is toasted.
Found it and looks like it's a slightly older model. Unfortunately appears it has liquid crystal leaking so the lcd glass must've been damaged. Definitely worth doing at least a teardown video though.
Thank you so much!!! Just received a fake „Japan DH“ for 20€ from amazon here in germany. My fake version was similar to the fake one in this video. I will send it back and get one in a local shop.
Got a plain black one of these and just had to replace the battery after about 6 years. Quite fiddly to do as you have to take it apart (not just pop a new one in) but easy enough when you know how. Also got the one with a silver coloured face (plastic) with black strap.
Well looks like I was taken in...lol I just bought one on e bay claiming to be genuine and it fails most of the points that you raised.... fortunately I just bought it as a throw away watch when doing messy things and it didn't cost much..... but you live and learn who would have thought such a relatively cheap genuine watch would have been faked..... great video
The funny thing is that I've heard that you probably won't always be likely to spot a fake.... Even looking pretty closely.... That there are even grades of fakes for under 20 dollar watches... Right down to the inside of the watch and the above advertised water resistance. You can occasionally get shadows on real ones as well... The polarizing filter can be slightly misaligned.
I bought a Casio F-91W in Bangkok at a watchshop ( NOT from streetvendors) and the owner of that shop told me, that the battery will last for about 7 years. I didn't believe him; i was thinking, that he was kidding me, BUT INDEED ... after 8 years i lost my watch with never changing the battery !!! At that time (around 2007) it cost me 8,75€ (converted from Thai Baht), and it was the best travelers watch i had. Only the watch strap i had to change 2 times !!!
I bought one of these recently and it simply didn't work properly, so I just through it away rather than complain because of the low cost. But a first class watch usually. Great public service stuff. Been watching a long time. Cheers
That was very interesting. I would be curious to look at that and other products that have been available for that period of time, like the iconic Honeywell, round thermostat, to see how they have changed over the years.
Really interesting vince 🙂 aslo the fake has a really poor seal for water resistance where the one in the real one looks like it is designed to fit correctly
Based on this, it is an Original one. Paid it 15€ without the tax. It just does not have that u under resist. I am very happy with it, and it is a very nice watch. Cant wait to buy some more simillar watches
Wow...very detailed comparision. I have heard of fake Chinese Rolex, but Casio? This is so crazy. Need to watch out from now on given almost everything is purchased online these days.
I am holding a 20 year old example of the original. The fake is clearly a copy of older production watches as mine has the larger "U" but neat printing. The battery sticker is green as well. Perhaps dig out a 90s model and compare again. I have a late 90s G Shock and the screws are merely Phillips. Not Phillips with a slot for a flat blade. Black plastic Casios were certainly rougher and shinier to the touch in the 90s.
Oh dear I bought a fake! But what can you expect from a watch delivered for $9.99 AU. Still the fake does the job of bringing back the boyhood memories of my first digital watch in the 80’s. The Casio was bullet proof and survived a fair bit of punishment in the primary school playground.
I had a fake one!!! Damn you Amazon! It lasted a year before the strap failed. Now have a w-217H from Walmart love it. Didn't know about the button tricks though 😂 Great vid as always
I realised within the first 5 minutes that my Casio was fake just from the button tricks, I was starting to suspect though because it’s a A158 but with black strap and resin black body and I can’t find it anywhere anymore Thanks for the great video though!
Looking for some help/confirmation...my f-91w (I bought the army green version on amazon) passes all of these tests. However, my back plate looks more like the fake watch (noticeably vertically brushed - I have heard from others that real ones have horizontal brushing, but the real one in this video seems to not be noticeable either way), and it was made in Thailand, which I'm sure is legitimate. Also, the led allows me to see the time just fine in the dark...no it's not perfect, but other people are saying you literally can't read the time in the dark, which I have not found to be the case. Every other detail on this watch leads me to believe it is authentic. And it is beautiful for such a cheap watch. Just looking for that last .1% assurance. Thoughts?
I have the F-91W original that i bought new recently from Walmart, and it has a vertically brushed back, Made in thailand, and no u. It's legitimate, though.
I had a fake one that was only $4, then an original that was almost $30; I suggest you to compare "beep" sound, cause the fake sounds a little longer and pitched down, while the original beep is very short and high pitched. Also rhe screws are a good way to check it. When I went to a store to buy it and, seller showed me a fake and an original (he sells both ofthem, how curious), and I can confirm everything you say on your video its true. Even the Casio logo on screen didn't appear on the fake.
I had a family member giving me a Casio like that fake after 2 years of not wearing it it corroded the buttons and the entire insides so the waterproofing on the fakes aren't up to spec. And the fake came in a box like the real one and I took it in a watch guy that is a official casio shop in its "original" box and my surprise when he said it was fake, since it not normal for a watch to corrode everything just by sitting in a box in a drawer. Currently have a w-215h that use it in construction and has survived cement powder getting in the buttons and vibrations just like a g-shock.
I wonder what makes the LCD shadow and angled-view different on the two watches. Can it be that the fake one does not have polarizer film on the bottom side of the screen? Or is it just the different thickness off the glass that makes the difference?
What about "Made in Thailand"? I have another with a perfectly smooth (no engraved letters at all) back and a small bump/defect on the front of the case -- obvious fake, right? (Also a red rectangle instead of the red arrow.)
Good informative video Vince, I Never thought there would be a market for fake £10.00 watches. Just shows the difference between the two. Good use of Macro too 👍👍
I know I'm way late to the party, but holy cow, yeah, making knock-offs of a watch that's already super economical... who woulda thought. I'd imagine they're trying to sell for the same price as the real deal, because going even a pound cheaper ought to trigger people's tat alarms. 😂
i've got one of these. i believe it is exactly the fake one that was in this video. the only difference was the color of that sticker on battery. mine was white. other than that it was exactly like the fake and i know its fake. thanks man!
The fake one has a slightly lower pitch frequency as well. Another evident detail is a slight diminuendo in the original Casio, whereas the fake one has a tenuto note without any change in dynamics.
A serious question; What difference does it make in the user end. Ive had a Casio F91W (apperantly a fake one) that ive used for multiple years. It didnt let in any water, it still shows the time and this spesific watch isnt really a fashion or a status statement?
It doesn't really if the end user knows it is fake. I can see why people would want 2 of the fakes for the same price as 1 of the real. In my opinion though, the finish of the real one is worth spending the extra £5 and you are rewarding the company that came up with the design, rather than the company stealing the design. The £5 fake is a bargain and equally the £10 genuine one is a bargain 👍
@@Mymatevince Thats very understable but the thing is i do caving and camping quite often, seeing how i lost my last watch and thinking that i will use and destroy them more often it feels like getting 5 of them for 5.5$ is a good trade I guess i ll buy 2 or 3 originals and gift them to friends to make up for it

I brought a cheap F91 once, and the light button activated disco lights, the lights flashed blue, red and green 🤣
To be fair though, this is a very impressive fake that would get just about anyone
Especially at the price point. Someone is less likely to scrutinize a £10 watch.
so jarring when you cant stop looking at the wonky time once Vince mentioned it
Just as i was looking at getting a new F-91w this gets posted... spooky.
Fantastic watches for the money though, pretty timeless

ironically the way the fake ones keep time the owners are more likely to be timeless or at the very least untimely

Mines the same. No little u but all the little details are high quality.
I received mine and it also doesn't have the U, otherwise everything is the same as the original.
@@rickybest007 u like it? Or is it too early to tell?
For now I really like it, nothing bad to say.
I’ve been a long time lurker, this one earned a subscribe.
I love these watches
Oh dear I bought a fake! But what can you expect from a watch delivered for $9.99 AU. Still the fake does the job of bringing back the boyhood memories of my first digital watch in the 80’s. The Casio was bullet proof and survived a fair bit of punishment in the primary school playground.
Дуже хороше відео з порівнянними тестами оригіналу та підробки.
I had a fake one!!! Damn you Amazon! It lasted a year before the strap failed. Now have a w-217H from Walmart love it.
Didn't know about the button tricks though 😂
Great vid as always
I realised within the first 5 minutes that my Casio was fake just from the button tricks, I was starting to suspect though because it’s a A158 but with black strap and resin black body and I can’t find it anywhere anymore
Thanks for the great video though!
Thanks for the heads up. Now i know what to look for. Fantastic video.
One thing you missed . On the original there is a wide blue band around the edge and a thin one , on the fake just one wide band
Thoughts?
It's real. A few others have reported theirs having a horizontally brushed back as well.
I have the F-91W original that i bought new recently from Walmart, and it has a vertically brushed back, Made in thailand, and no u. It's legitimate, though.
Brilliant review of these watches, your attention to detail is epic!
Cheers for this video. Seems i just bought a fake one. Would haven't have known it . If not for this video. Have now got a proper one.❤
Thanks! Very helpful indeed. I just ordered mine, hope it's the original
I bought a fake F91. It's almost similar to your original one, but there are so many differences from your fake one.😮
I wonder what makes the LCD shadow and angled-view different on the two watches.
Can it be that the fake one does not have polarizer film on the bottom side of the screen?
Or is it just the different thickness off the glass that makes the difference?
I like the metal version of that watch. I wear it every day.
Back when i was a kid and i used watches i never knew anything about fake watches, now as an adult i'm glad i do.
Love your videos regardless of what you do keep it going thanks 👍
Those a pretty intersesting difference...nice job dude!
i've got one of these. i believe it is exactly the fake one that was in this video. the only difference was the color of that sticker on battery. mine was white. other than that it was exactly like the fake and i know its fake. thanks man!
The fake one has a slightly lower pitch frequency as well. Another evident detail is a slight diminuendo in the original Casio, whereas the fake one has a tenuto note without any change in dynamics.
Used to Love the CASIO watches with built in games, had one at school 37 years ago with a submarine bombing game on it.
A serious question;
What difference does it make in the user end.
@@Mymatevince Thats very understable but the thing is i do caving and camping quite often, seeing how i lost my last watch and thinking that i will use and destroy them more often it feels like getting 5 of them for 5.5$ is a good trade
I guess i ll buy 2 or 3 originals and gift them to friends to make up for it
@@Mymatevince i started getting suspicious when my F91W losing time
Nice tips to recognise original one :many thanks
I just got one and this video is helpful i legit check mine and it is really the original one
