No Zoe, as a fellow American who bought my used car earlier this year, those Americans who say you can find a used car under 10k have not shopped in this current market. Post COVID, prices are insane for used cars. Congrats!
OK so its the same here... it all changed post COVID and prices are through the roof 😭
I have a car emergency kit and a fire extinguisher! I havent had to use any of it, but some things I keep inside are spare clothes, rain ponchos, first aid kit, jumper cables, headlamp, flashlight, emergency glow sticks, reflective triangles for the street, toilet paper, a multitool. I think preparedness is super important, especially since youre in Canada and do long drives regularly. For you I'd include an emergency foil blanket and a regular blanket/gloves/a hat. If you get stranded out in the cold, you don't want to freeze in your car.
Would a fire extinguisher explode in the car in hot summer weather?
@@Sahara333 I keep it in my glove box and I have not had issues. They make ones designed for cars. I wouldn't leave it in direct sunlight.
Make sure that you don’t put very much on the key as it can damage the ignition over time if something is heavy and pulling down on it.

The only reason I have a car emergency kit/utility kit is because I go into nature quite often. So I keep blanket, rain coat, lighter and grill stuff, gloves.
The Subaru couple was spot on for me, lol! Cars are so important, we put so much money into them we have to identify with them for sure!
inside the glove box: hand sanitizer & napkins; trunk: jumper cables (now an electric battery pack so I don’t need anyone else to jump my car), tire iron, car jack, spare tire, and blanket in the trunk.

car accessory essentials for me, jumper cables/jumper batters, hand sanitizer, small garbage can (I get mine from amazon, it fits in the cupholder, holds straw wrappers and other small things), napkins and wet wipes in the glove box. CAA is such a lifesaver to have! my dad buys memberships for my siblings and I for christmas every year. such good peace of mind!

Congratulations! Since you live somewhere where it gets cold and snowy I'd recommend a car emergency kit just in case you get stuck. I had one when i lived in upstate ny

My first car was a Volkswagen it was so sturdy loved that but yeah it was pricey for repairs lol
For those who live in the US one thing I learned is that not all used cars in the dealership are certified. Certified means the car has been fully inspected and pass test. I recently went to a few Toyota dealerships and none of their cars were certified!

toyotas are great! i like the camry and have heard great things about the rav 4s too but all toyotas are really solid!
We went with a Honda CRV because we love the reliability of a Honda, but I almost got the Tiguan after having one as a rental. They are so nice!!

You can buy at the end of leasing. I did that and got it directly from Honda financial services so I didn’t pay stupid dealership fees
Congrats! IDK how it works in Canada, in the US they definitely try to sell you those extra things. Here, you can actually talk them down on those extra warranty things (usually what happens is I decline, they then offer another lower cost, sometimes even a 3rd lower offer). I don't usually get them but with a used car that is 9 years old, I can see a decent argument for paying that extra money.
I have had two VWs (I have a 2020 Golf right now). And they are reliable though my first one was involved in Dieselgate (where they lied about the fact that it was actually dirty and not within NY and CA emission regulations) and they bought it back (at a premium for lying to everyone).
11K for a VW SUV is not a bad price 😂 And you are right, Canada's weather (except maybe in Vancouver?) is hard on vehicles. A used car from California is generally worth more than th same exact used car in Massachusetts - just more issues with rust and wear when you deal with winter.
wow I completely forgot about Dieselgate LOL... that was such a big scandal! And you are so right about the prices in winter areas, our cars just do not last as long! Anyone who has a beautiful vintage car, for example, can only take it out in summertime
When I think car emergency kit, I'm thinking stuff you need if you break down on the side of the road. Extra caps for the air inlet things on your tires, tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, one of the metal blankets in case it's winter, I also throw in a hoodie, wool socks (also in Canada!), bottled water, a box of granola bars, a roll of toilet paper, beeswax candles (beeswax specifically can be safely burned in an enclosed space to provide some light and heat - need to be careful with pets and kids, and you can't keep them in the car in the summer), and matches, and a couple reflective triangles. Some of this may not be necessary if you only drive in a city, but if you drive in rural areas where you may have to wait several hours for a tow then I would have all of that.

It sounds like your insurance was accurate. The amount you received should put you in the same position you were in before the accident, which clearly yours did, i.e., the owner of the exact car you lost.
Two well-known resources for Canadian Black Book's Value Your Vehicle tool and Kelley Blue Book's Car Value tool, both of which started out as periodicals that published vehicle valuations and were distributed to dealerships to help them determine what to pay for trade-ins and set fair prices for used vehicles
You should never pay more than the amounts in these books. I would hazard a guess that your cars blue book value is the amount of the cheque you received.
We have a blue book value in Australia, which works this way as well.

not a dumb question!!! i mostly speak English in my life with friends and at work… but when Im out running errands I will usually do so in French, unless I hear the sales person/barista/waitor etc. speaking english :)

French is only in Quebec and New Brunswick. So in Ontario people speak english.

hii! its a used car, i just got it from a dealership :) and my rent is this price because I live in a one bedroom with my boyfriend and he owns the condo. So my rent goes to condo fees, internet, electricity etc

I would never buy from a dealer. Taxes are 2 high
Am I the only one who would rather put that as a down payment on a newer less mileage car and have a car payment vs buying a 10 year old car 😮 I feel like no matter how “in shape” a car is years matter
Me too! But I think she wants to buy a new car in a couple of years so it makes sense after losing her car that was just as old if I’m not mistaken
totally makes sense to want a newer car! because my income is so variable, a monthly payment would have put some major stress on my budget, so it wasnt something I felt comfortable doing right now :)
