I am new to computer networking and NAS functionality. I have a few questions. 1) How do you get your public IP address for your NAS? 2) Where does the person who will be connecting remotely via VPN, where do they get the software to set up the VPN? 3) As for the IP addresses to allow, what if they are using DHCP?
I success setup wireguard on my QNAP NAS. I can connect it with my Android phone. I also check my ip address. It already changed to my QNAP network public IP. But I unable to access any devices inside the QNAP network include my QNAP. May I know what kind of setting I missed
what could be the problem.. as soon as i add a peer (the point where u press apply in 5:17) all my settings get erased; server name, private key, public key AND wireguard gets disabled.. please help
So I got all this set up from Android phone to my qnap. Cheers! Now I want to look at folders onteh NAS. I assumed that I just scan the IP address of the NAS locally, as if I'm in the same building/network. Which is what a VPN is? Anyhoo, I can't see it, at all. I've allowed qfile, and browser access via the whtelite app setting of the android app. Anyone know what I'm missing?
In QVPN, do the "Online NAS Users" list and the "Connection Logs" get updated when a wireguard "client" connects to the VPN? I'm seeing my Last Handshake being updated correctly but the Connection Logs and Online NAS Users remain blank.
I follow the instruction, very simple and it work. But I do not uderstand which is the use of this VPN, once activated I just get totally disconnected from the net, practically I get the same result of turning off my Wifi. Then I guess, "I do miss something?" after the tunnel is activated, do I need other app to use that VPN tunnel to re-establish link to the NAS?
This is helpful, but it looks like the client side was not discussed. I managed to get a Wireguard client connection going, but I cannot set that connection as the default in Download Station. Even when the connection is set up as the default gateway for the NAS it's still not used. Also, there seems to be no setting for reconnecting if the tunnel is lost. Maybe I'm missing something?
That was a good video, but what about the server, PEER/ ADVANCED SETTING/ Preshared Key? And also the PEER, Preshared Key on the remote users or devices application. What benefits do you get from using the pre-shared key and when would you usually use it? Can you just insert your own matching passphrases in each of them to utilise them?
Well, thanks. But I still can't get success in access to my home local network from outside. I created WireGuard server on Qnap and client on Windows PC. I used 8.8.8.8 DNS because I have no idea what DNS I should use. Endpoint on client side WireGuard client I setup for my router's WAN IP. Am I Right? My router has private (white) WAN IP address. And I want to connect to my home local network from abroad or other places. So with such configuration I successfully connected to server. I managed to enter my router's web page (setup page). I have maneged to enter my IP cameras WEB pages. But there are no any SAMBA shares in My Network and I can't enter my QNAP SAMBA shares using its local network IP. Also I cant access my QNAP Web page using its local network IP. What am I doing wrong? I have the same with OpenVPN ... I would highly appreciate another A to Z video tutorial affecting the router settings as well
Great tutorial, i configured this and seems it's connected but what about ip forwarding, i cannot access any service in my local network from outside without it, any clues?
Nice video. i configured wireguard and I connect perfectly , but I can`t use services as ftp , smb as I'll be in my own LAN. This option requires any especial option?
Hi, very nice presentation. Can we do VPN with Wireguard between 2 QNAP like site to site VPN? Also, do we have to manage firewall rules and/or Port forwarding if we are behind router at both ends? Finally, is there a way to make access to other subnets like at one site we have 3 subnets in out LAN and would like to make each of them accessible from the remote QNAP? Thank you very much! PS- I know it is more technical questions but if you have website or tutorial already, please just let me know the link. Thx
Fantastic tutorial! i liked that you added preshared key, but it's a shame that there is no easy UI preshared key generator on the qnap itself. Having single digit number of clients/peers is fine without it, not using preshared key for anything more is a liability and it can be tedious having to use a third party preshared key generator. just nit-picking though, the performance is very noticeable with double-digit client connection, will be migrating my open vpn clients to wireguard in the future.
Good job doing half a tutorial. Hate it when people do things prefilled like this. Also, doesn't explain how to obtain the custom myqnapcloud link. Thanks!
Fantastic tutorial as always. WireGuard working fine here. Just a little feedback on the new QuTS Hero upgrade, what’s with the mega sized icons? If you’re going to do that to the interface at the very least give us high-res/retina icons - this needs work, it looks awful on my iMac screen. Thanks again.
@@QNAPUK it is not possible - I can send you a screen shot of latest QTS on my TS-453 and field is not editable, just do it editable, I manually edited /mnt/HDst A_ROOT/.config/qvpn/wireguard/server_peers.conf and it works now
I don't ha😮ve wireguard in my qvpn app even though I'm on the newest QTS 5 OS. Any ideas why? Edit: wireguard seems to only be available on x86/x64 architecture QNAPs, not on ARM
Thank you men. Spend already a few hours without much luck, then I found your video and it just works.

This is great. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. It is easy once you know what you are doing. 😂
hallo, how to setting ovpn server for qnap TS-228A ?
Hi, Is there a way to give different peers different shared folder access rights, equivalent to different users connecting through a pptp VPN?

What happened to the Client Side
It is covered in the video... or did you mean something else?
Where is the option to generate a barcode Wireguard famous for to make a phone connection quick and painless?
@@QNAPUK
A brilliant answer.
Politliness combined with justification for a poor product implementation and with Apple commercial on top.
Do you have a video on WireGuard app for Android?
No but I'm sure WireGuard themselves have some good guides to follow, principles/settings are the same, interface might just look a little different.
Thank you for the clear instructions. When will Qnap create an app for Tailscale? I’d rather not use a third party option.

Yep shocked me to.
@@QNAPUK Thanks for the update. On retina screens you really ought to consider @2x icons to improve the overall interface experience.
How do you setup for QNAP as VPN client rather than VPN server?
@@QNAPUK The Wireguard client option doesn't work. It will connect to a Wireguard Server but will not route traffic over the connection.
No WireGuard for the ARM ones, under QTS 5
@@QNAPUK yeah very bad move. That's why I'll choose Synology the next time
@@QNAPUK I hope so
Allowed IPs in peer fixed with /32 prefix !? WTF? Can we allow peer to peer communication?
Feel free to change it to /24, or whatever you need, if you need a different use from it.
I want communication between peers also a I think that /32 on the server side block that, but cannot be changed because it is hardcoded.
why on earth it is not possible to sedit Allowed IPs of a peers?!?!?! why prevent to use site2site connections!?!?!?
You can choose which IP a peer has. Site to site works great.

in server_ppers.cong it is a allow_ip and allow_ip_mask variables
