I mean including not onlu folder pairs but all the NAS configuration, apps installed, databases, applications data, etc. As an admin I can see the shares but not the root folders.. Thanks for sharing, but frankly what logic does having ONLY USB type A does in a NAS like the QNAP TS-H1290FX-7302P has? do we really want to take hours for a incremental or days for the full backup? Same for any of the high capacity cases.
USB-A or USB-C does not describe speed... they both run at the same speed. The TS-h1290FX has 3 x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports... this is 5Gbps. You can also get USB-A in USB 3.2 Gen2 which is 10Gbps, the port style has nothing to do with the speed. But 5Gbps is the maximum on this NAS for USB, regardless of port style. We decided to dedicate the PCIe bandwidth to the drive bays and PCIe slots in the rear rather than making the USB faster, if we had done 1 less PCIe slot or perhaps limited them to a lower speed we could have made the USB faster but it is more useful, in our opinion, to have faster/more PCIe slots.
Thank you! I thought this video was on the "backup" option in Hybrid Backup, not the sync option. The problem I ran into was using the sync option set to Midnight to a USB connected external drive. My Qnap NAS was hit with the qlocker malware! And guess what happened? At Midnight, all the files that were encrypted on the NAS were synced to the external!!!! So, what I thought was a protected backup truly was not. I suppose if I had disconnected the external prior to midnight, I would have been ok. But that would be cumbersome, and I would have needed to know the NAS was hit that day. It was several days later that I discovered the corruption on the NAS. That is why I'm searching for how to avoid this situation, using the backup option. I think it would keep several versions on the USB external that I can restore from. Example: Keep 7 days worth of "versions". On day 3, the NAS gets hit with malware (qlocker2). On day 5, I discover the corruption when trying to play my music from the NAS. I restore from day 2's backup and all is good! Over time, the corrupted versions on the USB backup roll off. I think that's what I need to setup. Thoughts?
Synology Hyper Backup is about a billion times better.. can actually schedule multiple backups with retention periods so that you can go back days, weeks, months or even years and recover your data.
If I encrypt the drive using this function, does it use a technology that is supported by LInux systems as well or is it a proprietary encryption that can only be opened on QNAP NASes?

You cannot set a retention policy but you could use something like QFiling, which is an app, the free included licenses should be enough. You could create a rule that looks at the external drive and perhaps create a task that monitors for file/folder age by the modified date and ask it to delete anything over a certain period.
Can you also use your external drive as your workdrive and back or sync the USB to the NAS? This is of course atypical but I work from 3 different platforms in 3 different physical locations which all have a NAS drive, ideally I work of the NAS but after talking to IT and 3rd party NAS image vendors it appears this isn't technically possible. So option would be to work on external SSD and weekly back that up to either NAS

It will allow me to do one folder - > FrontUSB1, but if I add more to sync i get the error ? The only thing that gets duplicated is the choice of FrontUSB1 as the destination? It looks like it does not support multiple folders syncing to FrontUSB1

Just curious.... If just doing a copy/paste or the other options using HBS3, how can we verify if the files copied over accurately and intact? It would appear this is ONLY possible if using the actual "backup" function in HBS. The only issue I have with using the backup option is that if my NAS is down or inaccessible for any reason, its in the QNAP backup format and cannot be read by any other machine (like a windows PC). Hence the data is unusable until restored to my NAS or another QNAP. For copy/paste this is a problem ... you must be sure that your backups are not corrupted in the transfer process so you have a 100% accurate full, usable copy of the data. Hi; I need to replace my legacy volume . I tried to expand my storage by replacing 4 6 tb drives with 14 tb drives but it won’t work because I have 16 tb limit due to a legacy volume . So I need to first back up my volume and then create a new volume . What type of enclosure do you recommend for the external drive ? I should remove one of the 14 tb drives , use that to back up and then restore ? How do I back up then delete old volume and then create a new volume and then restore ? Thanks Adam
As for enclosures, something like our TR-002 would work well. I would recommend reinitialising the NAS after you have your data off, set it up as a new device, you'll be deleting the "System" volume anyway so you would have lost all apps/settings doing this. Best to start fresh with no legacy settings on it.
I have 2 USB drives ( say A and B) and 2 volumes on my nas (say 1 and 2). Can one touch copy know to backup volume 1 if I plug in usb A and backup volume 2 if I plug in usb B? Thanks.
Great video. However, after configuring the front button synch option, nothing seems to happen (does not even starts), when pushing the button for two or more seconds. I'm now restarting the NAS hoping that it willy work after it restarted. BTW I have chosen to synch. all folders from the NAS to the external hard drive
The reboot seems to at least make the synch job start w. a beep and a blinking USB light. But no gui for the status of the process visible if there is any at all. Nothing in the "background tasks" either. So the blue blinking indicator light and the final beep is the only thing that I have to watch for if I want to know?

You will have a shared folder automatically created with the label of the drive. You can alter the permissions of who is allowed to access it in the Control Panel -> Shared Folders area when it is connected to the NAS.
Hi, I've tried setup using the USB One Touch Copy (following your video), but immediately on clicking apply I get the error " The specified folders are already being used. Select another folder." I've quit all applications, so nothing should be accessing those folders, which I would not expect to have to do, but still it says the same message.
@@parkertownsend Hi Chris, yes I did get this resolved but I'm sorry I can't remember how. Maybe it required the very lengthy reboot of the NAS? What I am finding with this one-touch-copy, is that you have to wait for it to mount the usb drive before pushing the button, so I've been launching the Qnap browser interface and waiting for it to show up on the top icon bar of that interface, then I push the button on the NAS, then check that it has started to copy, again in the top icon bar of the Qnap interface. So a bit more of a manual process, but still relatively easy.
@@parkertownsend I have just found a solution, somehow it was not available anywhere. Basically you need to create a destination folder name on your external drive for each of the folders you are planning on backing up. Then after clicking apply button it works and no error popup appears! Hope it helps, but its been a year since, so most likely you figured it out

I tried looking into it and some sources says that it could be due to either not compatible drive (mine is compatible) or because the one touch button is disabled... I ended up doing it manually. Would it better to use an HD w/ built in software like the "WD MyBook" or "Easystore", or would something like the "Elements" HD be best without the addition software features? One question, if my QNAP 431 has 4 bays, and I have it setup in a RAID5 sequence to ensure if one drive fails, I'm still ok.... will it still copy all files over to the new External drive as native files, or as fragmented files? Also - if my QNAP has 3TB drives inside it allowing me a total of 8TB in a RAID5 sequence, can I then drop all my files into the external drive using the one touch copy method, yank out all 4 of the 3TB drives, and stick in larger drives, and reverse the copy method to give me more storage? @@QNAPUK Gulp - I think I have a serious problem. I setup the Seagate 10TB drive, followed the instructions... and it was a brand new empty drive. When I clicked the one-touch copy button, it started to copy (or so I thought). I wanted the direction to be go: 𝗡𝗔𝗦-->𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲... so everything would have transferred into the external drive ... all about 7.5TB of data. However... the Problem I realized when I went to go check the backup.. was there is NOTHING on the Seagate drive. ZERO. And when I went to go check the NAS folders, there is NOTHING inside there either. I checked the sync settings.. and I had the one-touch copy set to 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲-->𝗡𝗔𝗦 instead. Please help me retrieve the data that should be on the drives. Please tell me there's a way to do this.
@@Smorfar NOPE. The one-touch copy method OVERWROTE all data from a blank drive to the drives that had all the data. I paid a recovery specialist company $1,000CAD to fix, and they could only retrieve a fraction of the files. They also told me QNAP is the worst NAS to buy. It was the dumbest one-touch copy method they've encountered, and the backdoor entries for security is what has caused their name to be smeared through the NAS sector. Now I've lost all my data, and out money for something that should have never happened.
@@davewoeckener5719 Really sorry this happened. This is obviously a big design flaw imo. Should not have happened. Qnap seems to be the cheaper option of the two but it seems to have more problems. Do you have another NAS or still use the Qnap? Also i dont know why the One Touch Copy mechanism just copied nothing to the NAS and called it a day. Really bad on Qnaps part.
do you have issue with the usb hdd not recognize sometimes? It's ridiculous that one day you're connected just fine then the next it can't mount the same usb hdd because "unknown partition". The only solution i known is reformat the drive and retransfer the whole files again. note: i turn off encryption
@@QNAPUK no, it's a wd hdd with a seagate controller board. qnap usb hdd compatible list said "seagate 500gb" as incompatible. I guess i am on the list.
Hi. Like your videos. Very informative! One question: I have the 872XT (and the TS-451D2-2G as backup). When using the one-touch import option to unload memory cards using a card reader, do you really need to un-mount and then re-mount the reader in order to start a new import job? I just want to insert a card, press the on-touch button, eject the card (physically) then put in another one and press the button, and so forth. Thanks! 👍
Check the USB HDD compatibility list before!!!! QNAP detect a very poor quantity of type!!! And a disk OK today can be undetected tomorrow without any change on the HDD!!! 4 disk from different manufacturer (WD, Toshiba...) and different size no more detected. QNAP support reply: No more compatible. Check the list... My old Synology detect all my USB Drive.
Since Update HBS to 17.0.0512 its no longer possible to run backup to local external hard drive. The old job was hanging at 5% and during recreating job i get message, invalid path.
Did you find a solution? I thought I had that problem, too, but it was only a matter of permissions - see from about 2:25 in the video. I was not logged in as one of the admins and therefore denied access. My HBS 3 is the version you mention.

Also i dont know why the One Touch Copy mechanism just copied nothing to the NAS and called it a day. Really bad on Qnaps part.
do you have issue with the usb hdd not recognize sometimes?
It's ridiculous that one day you're connected just fine then the next it can't mount the same usb hdd because "unknown partition". The only solution i known is reformat the drive and retransfer the whole files again.

it's a wd hdd with a seagate controller board. qnap usb hdd compatible list said "seagate 500gb" as incompatible. I guess i am on the list.
Hi. Like your videos. Very informative! One question: I have the 872XT (and the TS-451D2-2G as backup). When using the one-touch import option to unload memory cards using a card reader, do you really need to un-mount and then re-mount the reader in order to start a new import job? I just want to insert a card, press the on-touch button, eject the card (physically) then put in another one and press the button, and so forth.

Another option is to simply use the free app that comes on all Synology NAS called VirtualHere USB Server.
This process does not back up your NAS. It backs up the shares on your NAS.

Check the USB HDD compatibility list before!!!! QNAP detect a very poor quantity of type!!! And a disk OK today can be undetected tomorrow without any change on the HDD!!! 4 disk from different manufacturer (WD, Toshiba...) and different size no more detected. QNAP support reply: No more compatible. Check the list...
My old Synology detect all my USB Drive.
Since Update HBS to 17.0.0512 its no longer possible to run backup to local external hard drive. The old job was hanging at 5% and during recreating job i get message, invalid path.

I thought I had that problem, too, but it was only a matter of permissions - see from about 2:25 in the video.
I was not logged in as one of the admins and therefore denied access.
