WeeScottishLass do pls Lamont clan. Ps love your vids
WeeScottishLass do the McDonald clan me I am Amy McDonald Scottish!!!!!
My 3rd great grandfather migrated to Australia from the Orkney Islands (the southern island to be specific). The last name is Heddle, I don't know if you could find out which clan is connected to that family name, but if you have any luck that would be awesome. My family has only been able to find out a small amount of info.
My Great Great grandad was from MacLeod and my pa was pretty proud of that. He even had a kilt with the yellow tartan on it.
I'm a Macleod of Harris and I've been to The Isle Of Skye it was magical it was such a cool experience inside Dunvegan since I'm from New Zealand.
I am macleod and possibly of harris and live in nz too. Im researching my lineage om my scottish side. Already know my maori side
My ancestors are MacLeods, for some reason we removed the 'A' in our last name when they came to Australia. Hopefully one-day I can visit Scotland and learn a bit more about them
I am too!
I'm descended from Macleod and Campbell so woow
@@GreenyAUi
When the MacLeods came to Australia some of them removed the 'A' (became McLeod) , now I'm starting the slow and long process of learning about my family and our ancestors from Scotland (the MacLeods)
We also partnered up with the McDonald's back in the 18th century to fight off the English (the Culloden battle)
I know that I'm late to the club, but I only found your channel yesterday. We(I am a descendant of MacLeod) are from three of the Hebrides. The Isle of Skye, the Isles of Lewis and Harris(yes it's one body of land, but as far as we are concerned it's two places) and the Isle of Raasay. The scarf that you are wearing is very Raasay. Also Hold Fast aren't just our clan words, but also our war cry that allows the bearer of the Fairy Flag to summon a host of past clan warriors. It's how we overcame the Macdonald clan at one point when we were outnumbered. I am from America, but my grandpa raised me on clan stories and British history.
Clan Macleod of Lewis were coastguards. They would light signal fires when the coastline was being invaded, hence the motto "I burn while I see".
I am from South Africa. My mom is from Flora Macleod. Kids. We do have a solid Scottish influence!
Im a descendant of Clan Macleod and this was very insightful. Thank you! Please no one come challenge me to a duel. Thanks!
My brothers name is 13 generations deep in the Harris lineage. Except, there was one guy named Peter Harris.. Freaking Peter.. Alas, he is really only the 9th or something. We have our tartan on stuff. I never knew Mcleod was in the Highlander. I might watch it now. Yay, McLeod Clan!
Fantastic video as always!
Clan MacDuff, clan McAlister, and Clan Moncrieffe are all clans that have been known throughout my family tree. Would be cool if you did a video on any of those.
+WeeScottishLass - Thank you so much for this video. I am from Clan MacLeod of Harris through my great grandfather.
ekos012 same as me through my grandmother
Hey I am in that clan too, idk why tho but I am currently searching why.
Hail cousins! My great-grandmother was the last of my family to bear the McLeod name
I don't know which branch I'm off as dad was MacLeod
My great grandfather is the reason I'm blood in. Hi
This was great to see. My last name, McClure, is from Clan MacLeod and I'm familiar with the tartans. I once had a necktie with the darker Clan MacLeod tartan on it. Am also descended from MacGregors and Jamesons, the latter of which is a member of Clan Gunn.
dj haven m My middle name is McClure and lots of my family members have it too (it has been passed down through generations)...just out of interest do you have anymore informations about the McClures? Many thanks.
An American McLeod here! Thank you for the video, I love learning about my ancestry and it is my dream to visit Scotland and The Isle of Skye.
We have McLeod's here too. One burned his own fingers off cooking hooch on a river island 25 years ago. Other two hobos died. They caught the fiberglass roofing of their hut on fire and McCleod burned his fingers off trying to dig them out.
"I will go, I will go, when the fighting is over, to the land of MacLeod, where I left to be a soldier, I will go, I will go".Love that song!
I'm headed to Isle of Skye soon. My great grandfather was Rory Macleod
I'm not scottish neither have any ties with your country, my roots come from spain and africa. i've found out about Scotland in a college project about your government and curiosity got the best of me to the point I fell madly in love with your culture and sense of humor. I've discovered your channel recently and let me tell you, you've got a fan in the Caribbean. All my best wishes and keep making great videos about your country.
Sookie4u ur awesome! Keep up the Scottish love! HOLD FAST
Proud MacLeod here! Fantastic video as always 😊
I just watched your episode and I'm so excited. I live on the Caribbean island of Grenada. My grandfather had Scottish ancestors from the Isle of Skye. His name was Patrick Macleod. I look forward to more episodes.
We had MacLeod smith clan we don't know much of the history but would like to know more
I am a MacLeod living in Canada surprised people are interested in my clan!
I love the sunburn comment in your video, that just made me laugh so hard I spit my drink out.
I am a MacLeod of Harris, and Harris has quite a few tartans. I have several kilts (formal and great) of the different MacLeod tartans. That is something you need to mention in your next "things that annoy scots" calling a tartan a 'plaid', I get tired of explaining the difference.
But loving your videos, I just found your page by pure random chance it showed up.
Oh it is famous here (US) because of an old TV show and movie called 'Highlander' they were fighting to be sole survivor and can only be killed by beheading. 'Their can be only one', so name is famous cause they were clan Macleod and was claimed to be one was from 1400's...great show but totally not accurate (ignoring all the immortal stuff)...just FYI
Ohhhh I've never heard of a tartan being called a plaid before, I assume you mean 'plaid shirts' etc? I'll have to look into that and add it into another video then because you're right that'd bug me too!
Please do a video on Tartans, and the differences between what to call each kind. Many of us in the US will call any material with a checked pattern "PLAID", as opposed to some referring to Plaid as the long piece of Tartan worn over the shoulder in Highland fashion, which you could demonstrate a féileadh-mór, or breacan an fhéilidh ( which ever term you prefer) and a fèileadh beag .Should make for some fun if you have to get down on the floor to put it on. lol
yeah - here in America, we call them plaid - sorry to say. On a high note, all of my underpants are various tartans - I have a nice collection actually LOL
ROFLMAO!! Mate that just made me choke and shoot hot coffee out my nose. I showed my wife and she comments "I hope ones with skid marks are MacDonald tartan" haha
I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal.
Very interesting. 🤔
Come on, Haggis! You Spanish peacock!!
:-D
Yuck how do you eat this...
You have the mannersh of a goat... and you shmell like a dung heap... and you've no knowledge whatshoever of your potential! Now, get out!
I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1592 in the highlands of Scotland. I am immortal.
I am Michael Harris proud member of the clan MacLeod of Harris, son of Jim Harris. Scotland born, American raised. I look forward to my return home next year in Spring. Well done on the information.Very accurate and well informative.
I can confirm that most of us MacLeod’s despise the yellow dress tartan with a passion. Most of us wear the darker blue and green one, and even within that tartan, there are two variations. There’s the MacLeod of Skye, which is a much more muddy looking colour, with a lot of brown mixed in, and then there’s the Ancient MacLeod of Harris, which is brighter and (in my opinion) much more appealing. The tartan you showed is the MacLeod of Harris tartan in muted colours.
I’m a MacLeod on my grandmother’s side, and I actually love the yellow tartan lol. So bold and unapologetic. The blue and green one is nice too though, and my mum favours that one.
Thank you for this video!! I am Canadian but very proud of my Scottish heritage! I am MacLeod from my father side and Scott from my mothers side!!
We had MacLeod in the family dads side was MacLeod smith great grandfather was a horse drawn tram driver in Glasgow does that ring any bells
I am Native American from Canada and I am distantly related to clan MacLeod. My fourth great grandfather was Emmett MacLeod and his daughter was Minnie who married George Jolly. One of her sons was my second great grandfather, Allan Jolly. Allan's daughter, Harriet Jolly, my great grandmother married Edward Blackned. After trying 23 and me, I found out that I'm 13.5% European, no wonder why my brother has brown hair and light skin also my grandfather has blue eyes. Some Natives still carry the MacLeod surname.
Hi, Wee Scottish Lass: I'm an American descendant via a great, great grandmother, on my fathers side of McLeod of Lewis. I have been researching the Lewis motto, including genealogy, for The McLeod of Lewis; side of the clan. Here is a historical translation of the Lewis motto. The crest of Donald MacLeod of the Lewes is a golden sun in splendour and his motto is "I birn quil I se", meaning I burn while, I shall burn, and also given in Latin as Luceo nonUro, meaning I burn but am not consumed. The motto relates the chief's coat of arms of a burning mountain or fiery beacon." I have plans to visit Scotland, in the near future, including seeing MacLeod ancestral homes. The surname MacLeod means 'son of Leod'. The name Leod is an Anglicization of the Scottish Gaelic name Leòd, which is thought to have been derived from the Old Norse.Clann meaning "children of the family,' offspring, descendents, clan', while mhic is the genitive of mac, the Gaelic for son, and Leòid is the genitive of Leòd. The whole phrase therefore means The children/offspring/descendents of the son of Leod.
The Clan MacLeod of Lewis claims its descent from Leod, who according to MacLeod tradition was a younger son of Olaf the Black, King of Mann (r.1229-1237). I would also recommend visiting Castle Leod, in Strathpeffer East Ross. The castle was granted to John of Killin, 10th Chief of Clan MacKenzie, (1485-1561) after he fought at the Battle of Flodden. The castle was passed to his great-grandson Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Lord Mackenzie of Kintail, who granted it in 1608 to his brother Sir Roderick "Rorie" Mackenzie. In 1605, Sir Roderick married Margaret MacLeod, heiress of Torquil MacLeod of Lewis, bringing her immense wealth into the family and also settling the feud between the MacLeods and the Mackenzies over the Barony of Coigach, which, thus passed into the Mackenzie family.
there is a MacLeod castle ruins in Assynt, near Lochinver called Achmelvich castle.
My mother did genealogy on our family name and apparently we did come from Scotland sometime between 120-150 years ago. My parents visited Scotland years ago and brought back a pin for Clan Davidson, which is my middle name :)
My sister and I are doing a geneolgy project together. This is very cool learned some new things. Thank you!
I’m a MacLeod on my grandmother’s side, and my mum and I went to Skye back in 2016. Dunvegan is just… so amazing. To know that your kin have lived in *this very place* for hundreds of years, to stand a mere foot away from some of your family’s most prized treasures… we signed our names in the Clan Registry. It was incredible. I also *highly* recommend the ruins of Trumpan Church. I swear to God standing in and amongst those old stones I felt as welcomed and belonging as I do at my grandmother’s house. It was so powerful.
I have studied information on the clans in the past, but it is refreshing and so much more fun to hear it in your voice and with your personality. I eagerly await your videos presenting the different distilleries of Scotland. (Late, but in earnest)
I'm blood into the clan. Tanks to my moms side. My great grandfather used to play the bagpipes
I dunno about you lads, but the concept of the clan is a magnificently innovating concept and manly fascinating as well, I wish we Aromanians had clans, even Albanians had clans. I will forge my own clan, the first Aromanian clan.
I'm in the United States and my bloodline has been here for over 300 years now and our last name has evolved into LOUD now... but I've traced last name to MacLeod from dunvegan castle.
Im a decendant of the McLeods of Harris, it used to be written MacLeod, it means "Son of Ugly" and they were decendants of the vikings! Idk a lot about them but I'm very proud of it lol😂😂😊
The ancient Clan MacNicol were originally the Clan that ruled over all the lands the Macleod's possess. The MacLeods of Lewis appear to have inherited their considerable possessions through marriage with a MacNicol heiress in the 14th century.
MacNicol is a sept of MacLeod, much like the Macrimmons who are our hereditary pipers.
Finally able to find out about my family even if it’s a only a little bit, my side was the green plaid and the hold fast insignia
In actual fact, Leod's name was Ljotr, and he was not scottish but rather a norwegian viking, although there is some debate as to his actual birth for a long time they thought he was the son of Olaf the Black, the last King of the Isle of Mann under viking rule. Some say he was rather cousin. He actually married into Dunvegan castle on skye. The MacLeod of Lewis tartan AKA The Loud MacLeod has no ties to the lewis branch of the clan, as neither does the MacLeod of Harris Tartan and both are worn freely, however some accept the Lewis tartan as being the dress or formal tartan and Harris the hunting or casual tartan. My heritage does happen to be MacLeod of Harris through my maternal grandmother, in direct lineage, not from a sept clan.
You must watch the one and only Highlander, the 1986 film with Christopher Lambert!
Aye, Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod
Love that movie.
You mean that movie where the Scotsman sounds like an
Italian and the Spaniard sounds like a Scotsman?
LOL, actually the Scotsman sounds like a Frenchman. ;-) Don't forget, these guys have been around for hundreds of years (being immortal) so maybe their accents have changed based on where they have recently lived......... or the actors just weren't good at doing accents and said "screw it".
There was also an excellent Highlander TV series.
My husbands grandma was a McLeod from Ireland
thank you so much for doing this mosco! this is my family clan!! i also had been told that two brothers were originally vikings resettling but havent looked into it. just a thought. thanks again and cant wait to go to scotland again, i love it 💜
I'm South-African but my mom's side is Scottish and we're Macleod's really want to visit some day.
Good info. Another awesome video as always.
Thanks Amber
Great wee video, my middle name is macleod, my great great grandmother is a macleod, I'm going to be using the tartan to be part of a clothing brand.. Thanks again
And its the Lewis castle and also thanks for the shout out in your q&a
thank you so much Mosco for choosing the clan i wanted to know about, it is SO much more interesting coming from a Scottish woman, makes it more genuine.
I'm actually part of clan Macleod of Harris. It's a big part of family history and my nana visits Dunvegan. My friend is a Macdonald and we often joke about how our ancestors were enemies. Despite my surname being english/french and his being polish.
I adopted one of what I call my grandfathers... he was a Maclean. Not sure if I spelled it right. I greatly admire & respect this man!
Neat video. My mother's maiden surname is one that is considered to belong to a family that is not a clan itself, but a sept or dependent of Clan MacLeod. I'm told that some people who shared my mother's maiden surname gave their clan name - that is, MacLeod or McLeod, to immigration officials when they landed in Canada in the mid-to-late 1800s.
Would love to see you do a video on Clan McKenzie.
Hi just saw your video while searching my husband's side of the family and his mother Was a MacCload of Harris and was born in Babal in Stornoway I'm still looking into his family history and so far it has been really interesting.
I don't know yet what distant clan I'm related to... Anxious to find out
MacLeod is also one of those clans with a Norse connection. The Gaelic Leoid ( Leod) is from the old Norse ”Ljotr”.
It actually means ”ugly” though in modern Icelandic ”ljotur” is used as a term for a tough guy, a fighter......so pretty much ”bad ass”.
Tormoid and Torcall too have a Norse ring ( Tormod / Thorrmodr, Torcal / Thorkell ).
Thormodr means ” the courage of Thor”.
Thorkell means ”the cauldron of Thor” ( for sacrifices ).
The names exists in the Nordic countries too to this day as Tormod, Torkel, Torkil, Torkild, Thorkel , Thorkjettill etc.
Other ( Scottish ) variants of Thorkell are Torcadall,Torcull and Torquil ( a couple of clan chiefs of the MacLeods where named Torquil ).
There is an Irish version of Thormodr too as Tarmach, O’ Tormaigh, O’ Tormadha, Tormey, Tormay.
🇸🇪🏴🇮🇪
I'd love to see a video about the Morrison Clan! I love all of your videos. Thanks for sharing! :)
The Highlander was the only thing I knew about the Clan MacLeod... even though it's fiction.
My family didn't have a clan as far as i'm aware, but we do have a tartan 👍☺
I really appreciate the depth of your research. This is a great VLOG!
Hello from the U.S. Mosco,
Thanks for this, I'm a MacLeod of Harris descendant. Thank you for sharing this, I don't know much of the history of this part of my Celtic lineage so I'm always fascinated when people speak of them. What I do believe I know is origin of the Bull, I'd be curious for verification. As my father once told me, the Macleods were guardian warriors of Skye. There was a bull terrorizing the villages surrounding Dunvegan, which the Brothers rallied fighters and killed. They removed a horn and fashioned it into a chalice which has remained in the dinning hall since. Again, thank you for sharing!
Would be cool if you could do the Stewart clan.
Yees I'd love to see that
My mum Is a Stewart we have Susannah MacLeod married John Stewart and in 1713 Christian (Ann) MacLeod married Bailey John Stewart in Scotland
@@tawnymacleod4022 My grandfather is Macleod of skye and my grandmother mother was a Stewart. I left the old country behind for New Scotland though.
Thank you, Wee Scottish Lass you did an excellent job, presenting a video on my kin. I still get tongue tied trying to pronounce some of the names of my kin.-Great video, again great job..
Thanks for sharing the info! My Grandmother was born in Scotland before comming to Canada with my mother. I didnt know a lot of my background but i have recently been asking her a lot of questions and now know im apart of this clan. She tells me bit by bit so im not sure what side of the clan i pool from. Hopefully ill find out soon :D
Dad side was MacLeod smith clan
me too my great grandpa was born in the castle then moved to canada
When I visited Scotland I didn't know what clan my ancestors came from. Since I was a huge Highlander Fan I thought it was pretty cool to find out they were actually Macleods and Farquharsons. If You could do a video on the clan Farquharson that would be so amazing. Thank you.
Do a video on Clan MacGregor and Clan MacAlpine please , love your videos btw.
Those were the two I was going to ask for. Arch McGreggor and Edith McAlpin are my ancestors.
Would love to see you cover Clan Bruce!
We need more of these.
Awesome video! I asked for Macleod on your last clan video! Hold Fast
Oh man it'd be so amazing if you did clan MacDonald
I hear my hubbys family the McDougles and your clan don't get along. I found this interesting bc my hubby is maternal Mcdougle so my children have a different last name. A lil background, There were MacDonalds in our church & not one of them got along with my kids. When I talked to the mother I didn't know their last name, when she told me I went ahhhh lol . When I told her, the name McDougle she herself being MacDonald by marriage went ahhh lol as well. Have you found this to be true as well?
Historically, the Macleod Clan had feuds with the MacDonald Clan, but I have heard little about issues with the Macdouglls. The clan lands were close, but not quite overlapping, at least during the 19th century.
Kyle Macdonald I'm McDonald of the Isles!
Kyle Macdonald or McDonlad
I'm mostly sure that its the same family if traced far enough back, they both mean son of donald
I would love it if you did a video on the Seton clan.
I love this vlog highlander is the name of the show. it was around in the 90's I think and there were lots of movies done first the the tv show was based on. you can find it on Hulu. do clans still exists today.
1st was movie in 86, then was tv show in 92
I think you should do Clan MacIntyre as a video:)
so of the history is clouded in legend so would be a fun 1 to see what you can find about it
The MacLeod of Harris it’s moto HOLD. FAST actually came from a story that a Campbell was to be tried for killing or treason and was to meet his death by a bull for the clans entertainment but half way through a MacLeod jumped into the ring and grabbed the bull by its horn and stabbed it 11 times until it was dead while he was holding on a spectator shouted HOLD FAST which I thinks mean don’t let go or don’t give up . No one knows for certain why the MacLeod jumped in to save the Campbell some say it was to stop them from going to war as MacLeod and Campbell were good allies some say the MacLeod knew the Campbell as a friend or thought he was innocent and jumped in to save him (the bulls head was use for the crest
nice bit of info, have a great day.
Macleod descendant here! Shout out from Forida, USA! 🇺🇸
Please make a video about the Maxwell clan. My mother is a Maxwell and it's amazing how many Scots live in southern Illinois in the US.
Clan Buchanan!
Chances are you'll have to work your way through every clan before you're done with these videos! I descend from Buchanans of Argyll and am interested in learning more about their clan, so there's my vote...
We'll done !! I really enjoy your videos!! "Happy 🐣 easter" Mosco
Happy Easter Weezer =D
Please do a vlog on the "noble house" of Boyd and connection with Clan Stewart.
The tartan of Lewis is also known (infamously) as the 'Loud MacLeod.'
Crap
Just found out I am of clan Macleod and related to queen mary of scot
Pretty cool
Need more scots in USA
Love these... educational and fun.
You said in a pervious video that you have an old wall at the end of your street. In a future video I would like to see this wall.
A whole video to show you a section of a wall still standing x'D that'd be an interesting video.
Maybe not a whole video. Maybe a few photos of it or maybe you could do a video near the wall but also talk about other things?
I live in America and the oldest thing close to my home are some civil war relics and buildings. That was in the 1860s if you didn't know.
WeeScottishLass it could have been built by the Romans, like Hadrian's wall near Caerlaverock Castle at the Solway Firth.
Rome: Rise and Fall is fantastic, and has an episode about the invasion of Britain.
Warrior Queen: Buduxa (spelling) of the Iceni tribe was also very good. It was good at portraying the ancient people of what is now Scotland.
My family came over from Scotland in the early 1700's. I have traced them back to an ancestor-William Scott who was born in 1671 in Fife, Scotland and died in Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA in 1740. Interestingly, the land my ancestors first bought in Maryland was later incorporated into the Capitol of the United States, Washington, D.C. I've only got limited access to information on the Scott Clan. I would be interested to see you do video on the Scott Clan.
Love you Mosco, thanks for this vid.
Clan Buchanan if you please, and, if you can, a bit of explanation of how septs work in the clan system. Thank you.
I would love it if you did clan MacAulay
Duncan would be great to know about. wonder if it matches what the relatives say. Thank you for your videos!
There's a third tartan that is red. and also a macleod branch, of rassay. It was a mainland branch that ultimately fell.
Clan MacLeod - the best clan!
Yes
a video for the clan McTavish would be awsome.
Would you consider doing a vlog about the Robertson (Donnaheid) clan?
Could you do a MacGregor wan?
Can you do Clan MacPherson?
Aaron Clark Clan Macpherson! Derived from Gillis! Migrated from Scotland to Holland/Belgium!
Could you do an episode about the Ferguson tartan? I read that my mother's family is from Ayrshire.I'd like to see where they came from.
Could you do a vlog on Clan MacTavish please? 😁
Can you do a bit on the McClellan clan? Greatly appreciate it if you can, thanks!
How about a vlog on the "Glass" Family from Scotland?
I am descended from 2 clans: MacDonald (or Donald) and Hamilton. I would love to see a vlog on either of these 2 clans, or maybe both. (hint hint ;^)
I don't know much about my MacLeod background but I'd love to learn more about it. Also throughout my school years I've only had one teacher in high school who actually said my name correctly because they were a fan of highlander
The quickening McLeod..
I'm a Henderson. would love to see something about our clan. my mom is from the McQueen clan. would love to know a little history about either one.
