PetSmart Betta Fish Quality? Types & Colors

  • I find the biggest issue people have with betta fish from PetSmart is heaters. Or just bettas in general (from anywhere). This is the best heater for bettas.
    Additional Fish Tank Topics:
I once found multiple khuli loaches in a tank I was moving and forgot they were there.... dont remeber buying them so they must have been quite a few years old.
Did a reshape a couple months back and found this guy. No idea what he is or where he came from. Tanks been running for years. What pumps and how many does everyone use for there 40 gallons or 75 gallons? I've been letting this soak for about 2 weeks or more in a 5 gal bucket. It's still turning the water a light brown. Will it ever stop doing that? And can I put it in with my acara and severums?
I bought a pair of them on a custom stand for less than that. You can get at Petco or PetSmart during sales for $1 per gallon. You can get at garage sales all the time for about that price. Or on Facebook sale pages. Or letgo. Or Craigslist. Sometimes for free. Your local fish store might even order one for you that size at cost. We have 2 local stores that will do that, just gotta ask.
Hi, Wondering if any one here can help. I'm making a sand fall and run into a problem.
I'm using a pump to power this, I tried the airstone method and it doesn't suit my design so trying this route instead. As per the pic below i can get it to suck sand in and blow out if I use a small vertical pipe(outlet b). Soon as I try to use the correct length (outlet a) I get blow back through the inlet hole so it doesn't suck in, it blows the sand away (like a volcano). I have tried getting a more powerful pump (1500l/ph) and I get he same results as a 600ph/l pump. Any pointers?
You're getting a blow back through your Inlet hole because the distance from your pump to that connecting piece is too short. If you make the distance a little bit longer between the two you should get the right amount of force. It's probably too much pressure and it's forcing the sand back out the inlet hole.
Honestly, I don't think it's going to work. As soon as you have an opening in a pipe, the pressure is pretty much gonna do what it can to out of there. Systems work going from high pressure to low pressure and want to do it the easiest way. Also, there is gonna be head pressure from the size of the up piece which is gonna cause back pressure in the pipe which is gonna force more water out through your sand inlet. This design works with the air stone due to displacement, for this to work you would have to have the sand inlet on the water pump inlet but I don't think the pumps are gonna handle pulling sand though them for any length of time.
People do have this working(alot more have this issue, so trying to figure out what is causing it) and the strange thing is that water is coming out of the top which makes this confusing as if no water was coming out then i would agree that the pressure from the up piece is forcing it back down and out the inlet.
for anyone interested here is a detailed video, just mine for some reason doesn't function as his, i'm gonna try and re cut a t piece now and see if that makes a difference. So, i've never tried this. But i'm kinda thinking that the sand should get pushed by the air. So if the top outlet was tipped up a bit the lighter air would go up and the heavier sand would fall?
PetSmart betta Fish. I currently have a sandfall setup the exact same way. I do have the problem you mentioned occasionally. It's usually due to my pump pre-filter being clogged so reduced water pressure or the sand clogged up in the pipe between the sand inlet and sandfall outlet. I just stick my finger in the hole to block it and the water pressure clears everything up.
How about trying to install a one-way check valve, like a flapper valve at point B? But if you want the sand to exit at point A, why is point B needed as on opening? Sorry b was a test outlet. It would work with smaller up pipe but soon as I switched it out with a longer one it would blow back through the inlet (although water would come out of outlet a it would just create a volcano effect with sand on the inlet.)

At least in my area, Petco seems to have healthier, more colorful bettas than PetSmart, but that can vary widely depending on the management and husbandry practices at each individual store. I'm not looking for a show-quality betta anyway and am very happy with my Petco betta. :)

great video...honest and compassionate...loved it...i got one as a gift and it died after 4 months...it's been a yr and now i have sort of fallen in love with a tiny female (healthy one)...I prefer a female as the gift betta was really super colourful and fancy...and i was so upset after he died..I had a good size tank with heater and filtration. Now i am going up to a 10 gallon tank which i will get tomorrow. I have been torn about also getting a maybe not so perfect one from petsmart in my town as opposed to the one larger fish place about one hour away from me. Ughhghg it's so depressing to see them in cups. I will probably consider this a rescue...I feel so sorry for them and many are desperately trying to get your attention...Others that are clearly one year old, are just stuffed into the cup and look distressed...Wish to God they would just make the damn containers bigger...why not??

I've seen some pretty bettas at a pet smart before. I personally got a halfmoon who looks good enough for me. But, when I went to another pet smart I saw some rose petal dumbos. It's a shame that there was no people there looking at them except for me. Petsmart doesn't take care of their bettas though.

I got my Crowntail Male from Petsmart and my Black Orchid Male from Petco. They weren’t perfect but they were the healthiest looking out of the other Bettas around them which is why I picked them up and they actually lived longer than I thought they would. I’ve had them both a little under 6 months and they are super healthy, active and their personalities have really shown through. So I feel like it’s hit or miss when you get your Betta from these big commercial pet stores because even a healthy looking Betta from PetSmart could be dead within a short span of time or the unhealthiest looking Betta can get better and thrive with time and live a long happy life. I think it all depends on their past before they got to the store, how they were cared in the store and/or how well you’ll care for them when you “rescue” them.

I just got a betta from PetSmart today and she seems pretty healthy. I saw one dead fish which I can’t criticize them for because there’s going to be a dead fish in every fish store. Besides that they all seemed healthy. The cups were filled all the way, some of the males were flaring at each other, and a lot of the females were just swimming around in circles. None of them showed signs of fin rot or ich which is was very happy to see. I’ve also noticed that they keep their zebra danios and white cloud minnows in cold water (even though they advertise them as tropical community fish). I restocked on white minnows today and noticed that compared to the container the betta was in the bag of minnows felt cold to the touch. Overall I’m very happy with my local PetSmart’s fish and I’ve gotten a good portion of my fish from there, as opposed to any other animal I get from anywhere but there. I wouldn’t go as far to say that they take amazing care of their rodents and birds, but overall PetSmart has been greatly improving their care for fish, dogs, and cats.

It really depends locally how they are being treated cause it waent always this way. Don't buy from local stores if the fish look sad because you just don't wanna suport that kind of treatment. I've known employees who use to make the unsold betas fight to the death in the back on their free time and I've met employees that actually do personal research gor every animal that comes in and try to match the requirements with what they have available to them. I've bought my bettas from PetSmart, Petco, & rescued from friends. Doesn't matter where or how I get my fish, they always live longer & look more beautiful in bigger tanks like a well planted community 10 gallon or even alone in a 3 gallon with live plants & a few shrimp or currently a 5 gallon with a small mystery snail & live plants. However, my baby bettas that I have gotten from both Petco & occasionally PetSmart (sells them as young females), don't seem to live more than 1 yr at most. I'm currently struggling to help a 2 month old baby betta from Petco to thrive. I bought it bug bites so it can eat because that's the smallest food I can find with the highest quality. She still won't swim around & just sits on the bottom. I can only have her in about a quart of water because she won't swim up more than 4 inches from the bottom. I'm using a 1 gallon hex tank for it (which they labeled as a girl at less than a month old like they really know) so there's room for growth. I change the water at least once a week. It has grown a little & gotten more color on it's fins but won't swim. I only got it to rescue it from certain uncomfortable death in a cup & my daughter nearly begged me. I also bought an older baby (labeled boy) about 3 months old now with the same coloring initially. It has almost doubled in size & the fins are red by the body on the tail & irredescent clearish blue on the rest of them. The body is still colorless for both of them but my bigger one is starting to get small black spots scattered over its body. So I'm hoping it's a male but the short fin has me thinking female but if it is a male I'm thinking it might be a Delta because of its dorsal fin but who knows. If I wasn't already looking for a betta for my tank that had been set up since July & nearly in tears over these innocent darlings being condemned to such short lives (saw 1 dead & 1 near death with little water in cup) I would have gone for the full grown betta I was thinking about when I went to the store. I have actually seen the bettas as they arrive at PetSmart & watched them unpack them & change the water. They arrive to the store in the same cups that they're sold in stacked in insulated boxes. The water is blue from treatment with antibiotics & I did see some remnants of food in them. As soon as the box was opened, I watched the employee take them one by one & change the water out little by little till it was clear then feed them fresh pellets. PetSmart I know will not sell any of their animals or live bugs on line. They're website says (in store only). While Petco will ship fish & plants. I don't know about other animals at Petco as I don't really look online for their animals, but to compare prices of supplies. I will say that Petco has a better setup for their hermit crabs than PetSmart but both are lacking the necessities for them. I've even seen some of my local fish stores selling bettas in a small vase or cup with little water. These are the most misunderstood beautiful fish & I believe along side the goldfish to be the most mistreated. People think these fish only live a couple years but I've had fish with a quoted 2-3 yr lifespan live almost 10 yrs. So I strongly believe people need to do their research before buying any pet & always read at least 5 sources of info to get the full picture.

It really depends on the store and employees. Some employees are just there to have a job or do like animals just don't care for fish. Petco in my area doesn't seem to care for their fish and nobody has any knowledge on fish. Now petsmart I've seen a dead betta or two but most seem active and well, the fish tanks and fish are clean and plenty, and the employees already know me due to my rabbits and now my fish! They're knowledgeable and although I already knew told me about cycling my tank which is right away key knowledge to let you know it's someone who actually knows about fish.

Is it in a bowl? If it is you should move it to a 5 gal tank, and make sure you condition the water

There are a few places in my town that sell Bettas. Weirdly enough the smaller stores have the more advanced systems for displaying their bettas. The pet smarts all have their bettas in a cup, where the smaller stores have an overflow system hooked up to a sump.
I just bought a veil tale, and it was from a place that had a sump set up.
I won’t give my money to a places that doesn’t take care of their fish. It might seem like I’m ‘saving’ them from pet smart, but that’s like saying I’d be saving a dog when I buy it from a puppy mill. In the end, I’m giving money to a place to spend on more bettas to abuse.
I wrote them a letter, I’d be glad to share it with anyone interested.

Went into a PetSmart yesterday and saw a dead male in horribly cloudy water, looked like he had been dead/dying untoched for days. Also saw a beautiful female who had just died. A lot of others looked like they wouldn't last long if they didn't get bought. It was so sad 😭 I wish I could buy more...

Of my bettas I got mine in these spots. I don't mind buying a betta anywhere as long as it interests me and is below 20 bucks usually. I paid 30 to import my Wild Hybrid and as a rule of thumb I try not to spend more than that on any domestic fish.

    Blue at LFS
    Rocky Petsmart
Malachai from Importer(wouldn't tell me origin)
    Helsing at Petsmart

My petsmart bettas are docile and do great in my community tank. On the other hand, my pet supply plus bettas are super aggressive and they need separated out.

    I'm lucky and unlucky I don't
Have a local fish store so that's unlucky but I'm lucky that my local pet smart has a worker who only works fish and's a manager and she takes good care of them she change's water good and feeds them blood worms and flakes and they are all very colorful and swim very happy unlike the ones in this vid she even takes the sick one's home to heal them with the money from her own pocket

@@PalmerAquatics I have had betta's in alsorts of tanks..I have found some like smaller tanks..but most like being a tank that is not to tall if they have large fins..but with a fair amount of swimming space and resting places..really each fish is different..I could not see my female being happy if I took her out the 65g and placed her in a ten gallon again..but my male is shy and likes the quiet of the kitchen..his fins are so large and thick he spends a lot of time resting..he would not be happy in my tall tank..

though veil tales are not my favorite, i have a male from a couple years ago that i hate because he’s aggressive but literally can not get rid of. my friends always ask if they can take him off my hands (as well as my teachers) because they saw a photo of him but i can’t seem to let him go. though lucifer the fish is a devil i could never let anyone else have him because we have some sort of connection. and i always think that if he died it wouldn’t be that bad but honestly i think i would be pretty distraught.

Actually you wouldn’t happen to have any advice on how to hot rod the element filters? Those cartridges cost an arm and a leg. There are no videos whatsoever.

only problem with buying the petsmart bettas is they will just keep restocking and by buying them you are only supporting them in the long run. the most efficient way of doing this is to not buy bettas from petsmart at all. this will make it so they stop selling betta fish.

The suppliers for Bettas at either place are low quality in my opinion. Here is why. I have bought a female from a private breeder and she is much healthier and hardier than the females from pet store chains. The pet stores suppliers breed quantity not quality. I am not say you can't get luckily and find really healthy absolutely gorgeous Bettas from either place or even from a Wal-Mart that sells fish. But you have to check out when fish come in. Freshly shipped betta fish (fish that arrived within 2-3 days at the longest) seem to rehome better than ones who have sat in their dirty water for 4-7 days after shipping. I also have found that rarely a late bloom male is accidently mislabeled as females.
